Secretargas transgariepinus
(White, 1846), is a member of the Afrotropical and southern Palaearctic fauna. Probably because of its secretive life style, ...little is known about this species and records of its collection are scant. Based on morphological revisions of the available specimens, we report new Middle Eastern records for this tick species that had been misidentified as other bat-associated argasid taxa. from two countries: one larva from Sabratha (Libya) was collected from an unidentified bat species (possibly
Eptesicus isabellinus
), seven larvae from Azraq-Shishan (Jordan), and 78 larvae from Shamwari (Jordan) were all collected from
Otonycteris hemprichii
. Twenty larvae from Shamwari were also tested for the presence of both, viral or bacterial microorganisms by PCR. Three ticks were found to be infected with the Murid gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68), one with
Borrelia burgdorferi
sensu lato, and four with a
Rickettsia
sp. closely related to
Rickettsia slovaca
. The findings represent a first evidence for the occurrence of these possible pathogens in
S
.
transgariepinus.
Despite the ubiquity of disease seasonality, mechanisms behind the fluctuations in seasonal diseases are still poorly understood. Avian hemosporidiosis is increasingly used as a model for ecological ...and evolutionary studies on disease dynamics, but the results are complex, depending on the focus (hosts, parasites, vectors) and scale (individuals, community, populations) of the study. Here, we examine the local diversity of haemosporidian parasites and the seasonal patterns of infections, parasite richness, and diversity in a natural woodland bird community in Slovakia. In 35 avian species, we detected 111, including 19 novel, haemosporidian cytochrome b lineages. The highest numbers of lineages were detected during spring and autumn, corresponding with higher avian species richness and infection prevalence in the avian community during these periods of time. Nevertheless, the haemosporidian community in the local breeders in summer was relatively stable, Haemoproteus lineages dominated in the local avian haemosporidian community, and only few parasite lineages were abundant within each genus. While prevailing Leucocytozoon infections in spring suggest that the majority of sampled birds wintered in the Mediterranean region, Plasmodium infections in spring can be due to relapses in reproductively active short-distance migrants. Multiple haemosporidian infections, both intra- and inter-generic ones, were common in the local avian community. Infection intensity peaked during summer and tended to be higher in older birds, pointing to the role of supressed immunity in reproductively active birds.

Geographic spread of parasites and pathogens poses a constant risk to animal health and welfare, particularly given that climate change is expected to potentially expand appropriate ranges for many key species. The spread of deleterious organisms via trade routes and human travelling is relatively closely controlled, though represents only one possible means of parasite/pathogen distribution. The transmission via natural parasite/pathogen movement between geographic locales, is far harder to manage. Though the extent of such movement may be limited by the relative inability of many parasites and pathogens to actively migrate, passive movement over long distances may still occur via migratory hosts. This paper reviews the potential role of migrating birds in the transfer of ectoparasites and pathogens between geographic locales, focusing primarily on ticks. Bird-tick-pathogen relationships are considered, and evidence provided of long-range parasite/pathogen transfer from one location to another during bird migration events. As shown in this paper not only many different arthropod species are carried by migrating birds but consequently these pests carry many different pathogens species which can be transmitted to the migrating birds or to other animal species when those arthropods are dropping during these migrations. Data available from the literature are provided highlighting the need to understand better dissemination paths and disease epidemiology.
Rickettsiae, obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria, responsible for mild to severe diseases in humans are associated with arthropod vectors. Dermacentor marginatus and Dermacentor reticulatus ...are known vectors of Rickettsia slovaca and Rickettsia raoultii distributed across Europe. A total of 794 D. marginatus, D. reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus adult ticks were collected from the vegetation, removed from horses, sheep, goats and dogs in Slovakia. The DNA of Rickettsia sp. was found in 229 ticks by PCR amplifying parts of gltA, ompA and sca4 genes. Next analyses of Rickettsia-positive samples by PCR–RFLP and/or sequencing showed D. reticulatus ticks were more infected with R. raoultii and D. marginatus were more infected with R. slovaca. The prevalence of R. raoultii was 8.1–8.6% and 22.3–27% in D. marginatus and D. reticulatus, respectively. The prevalence of R. slovaca was 20.6–24.3% in D. marginatus and 1.7–3.4% in D. reticulatus. Intracellular growth of R. raoultii isolate from D. marginatus tick was evaluated by rOmpA-based quantitative SybrGreen PCR assay. The highest point of multiplication was recorded on the 7th and 8th day postinfection in Vero and L929 cells, respectively. R. raoultii was transmitted during feeding of R. raoultii-positive ticks to guinea pigs and subsequently rickettsial infection was recorded in all organs, the highest infection was in spleen, liver and heart. Our study describes the detection and isolation of tick-borne pathogens R. raoultii and R. slovaca, show that they are spread in Slovakia and highlight their risk for humans.
Ticks are important vectors of pathogens affecting humans and animals worldwide. They do not only carry pathogens but diverse commensal and symbiotic microorganisms are also present in ticks. A ...molecular screening for tick-borne pathogens and endosymbionts was carried out in Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haemaphysalis inermis questing ticks collected in Slovakia. The presence of Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Coxiella-like and Francisella-like microorganisms was evaluated by PCR in 605 individuals and by randomly sequencing 66 samples. Four species of rickettsiae (R. raoultii, R. slovaca, R. helvetica and R. monacensis) were identified and reported with an overall prevalence range between 0.4 and 50.3% (±8.0) depending on tick species, sex and locality. Partial sequencing of the gltA gene of 5 chosen samples in H. inermis showed 99% identity with Candidatus Rickettsia hungarica. The total prevalence of C. burnetii in ticks was 2.2 ± 1.7%; bacteria were confirmed in I. ricinus and D. reticulatus ticks. The sequences from 2 D. reticulatus males and 1 I. ricinus female ticks were compared to GenBank submissions and a 99.8% match was obtained with the pathogenic C. burnetii. Coxiella–like endosymbionts were registered in all three species of ticks from all studied sites with an average prevalence of 32.7 ± 3.7%. A phylogenetic analysis of this Coxiella sp. showed that it does not group with the pathogenic C. burnetii. The prevalence of Francisella-like microorganisms in questing ticks was 47.9 ± 3.9%, however H. inermis (n = 108) were not infested. Obtained sequences were 98% identical with previously identified Francisella-like endosymbionts in D. reticulatus and I. ricinus. Coxiella-like and Francisella-like microorganisms were identified for the first time in Slovakia, they might be considered as a non-pathogenic endosymbiont of I. ricinus, D. reticulatus and H. inermis, and future investigations could aim to assess their role in these ticks. However, this work provided further data and broadened our knowledge on bacterial pathogens and endosymbionts present in ticks in Slovakia to help understanding co-infestations, combined treatments and public health issues linked to tick bites.
Essential oils and essential oil bearing medicinal and culinary plants have a long tradition of being used to combat infection, treat various conditions, and promote and restore health. Mint oils are ...traditionally applied to repel insects and treat various conditions including wounds, skin infections, inflammation, eczema, urticaria, psoriasis, scabies and insect bites. They are among essential oils promoted as a natural way to prevent tick-borne diseases and recommended as ingredients in various homemade repellent mixtures and tick-bite treatments.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three most common mint oils - peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), cornmint (M. arvensis L.), and spearmint (M. spicata L.) on obligate intracellular tick-borne bacterium Rickettsia slovaca.
Influence of mint oils on R. slovaca replication in Vero cells initially infected by lower (106) or higher (108) number of rickettsial particles was tested during in vitro cultivation with daily change of medium. qPCR and RT-qPCR based growth curves and linear mixed effect models were applied to evaluate the growth inhibition. Peppermint oil was further tested in pilot in vivo study on experimentally infected ticks.
Two of the tested essential oils, peppermint and cornmint, significantly inhibited rickettsial growth. On average, peppermint oil reduced the amount of rickettsiae present on day 4 post infection up to 0.05% of the rickettsial load present in the respective controls. Cornmint oil decreased the amount of rickettsiae to 0.09% of control. Peppermint oil also significantly reduced the number of living rickettsiae in artificially infected ticks.
Present study showed that essential oils with antimicrobial properties may also inhibit tick-transmitted bacteria, and thus their possible use as preventative measures against tick-borne diseases is worth further research.

Ecology and epidemiology of murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68) have been intensively studied since the isolation of the virus from murid rodents in 1976. This virus was detected in various mammalian ...species that share the biotope with rodent reservoirs of MHV-68. However, a survey of MHV-68 in birds has not so far been performed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the presence of MHV-68 in blood samples from two bird species captured at four localities in Slovakia. Using the nested PCR targeting ORF50 gene of MHV-68, we confirmed the presence of MHV-68 DNA in 9 out of 57 blood samples from Great tits (
) (prevalence 15.8%, confidence interval 95% CI: 8.5-27.4) and in 3 out of 43 blood samples from Eurasian blue tits (
) (prevalence 7.0%, 95% CI: 2.4-18.6). Our results suggest that not only mammals but also birds may serve as reservoirs for MHV-68, providing further evidence that MHV-68 is capable of frequent cross-species transmission.
Epidemiological and epizootiological studies of Rickettsia felis and other Rickettsia spp. are very important, because their natural cycle has not yet been established completely. In total, 315 fleas ...(Siphonaptera) of 11 species of Ceratophyllidae, Hystrichopsyllidae and Leptopsyllidae families were tested for the presence of Rickettsia species and Coxiella burnetii with conventional and specific quantitative real-time PCR assays. Fleas were collected from five rodent hosts (Myodes glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus agrarius, Microtus subterraneus, Microtus arvalis) and three shrew species (Sorex araneus, Neomys fodiens, Crocidura suaveolens) captured in Eastern and Southern Slovakia. Overall, Rickettsia spp. was found in 10.8 % (34/315) of the tested fleas of Ctenophthalmus agyrtes, Ctenophthalmus solutus, Ctenophthalmus uncinatus and Nosopsyllus fasciatus species. Infected fleas were coming from A. flavicollis, A. agrarius, and M. glareolus captured in Eastern Slovakia. C. burnetii was not found in any fleas. R. felis, Rickettsia helvetica, unidentified Rickettsia, and rickettsial endosymbionts were identified in fleas infesting small mammals in the Košice region, Eastern Slovakia. This study is the first report of R. felis infection in C. solutus male flea collected from A. agrarius in Slovakia.
Human toxocarosis is an important zoonosis caused by larvae of Toxocara canis/cati. The objective was to evaluate the role of IgG anti-Toxocara antibody detection and the specific IgG avidity in ...diagnostics of human toxocarosis. Anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies and IgG avidity were evaluated by excretory-secretory (ES)-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The IgG anti-Toxocara seroprevalence in people (n = 7678) from western Slovakia was 15.3% and found to be highest in the oldest age groups. The presence of low- IgG avidity in 179 suspected patients for toxocarosis was evaluated in relation to sex, age, IgG antibody levels, eosinophilia, increased total IgE, domicile, geophagia, dog/cat ownership, anamnesis. Low- IgG avidity index was found in 30.7% of the patients. The low- IgG avidity in eosinophilic group (42.1%) was significantly higher than in non-eosinophilic group (22.0%; P = 0.043). Substantially higher eosinophilia was detected in children (under 10 years old; 55.6%) than in adults (aged ≥ 41 years; 17.6%; P = 0.009). Significant difference between seroprevalence of total IgE in patients coming from towns (48.8%) and patients from villages (21.3%) was established (P = 0.007). Mild negative correlation (r = −0.477, P = 0.043) was observed between the amounts of eosinophils and the values of IgG avidity. The sensitivity and specificity of IgG avidity assay were 43.8% and 83.3%, respectively. Our results suggest that besides anti-Toxocara IgG, measurement of IgG avidity may be useful for the determination of acute toxocarosis. Moreover, these tests should be accompanied by other immunological markers and determinants of examined patients such as eosinophilia, increased total IgE and age.
