The article discusses some key questions regarding the study of migrant literature in the context of migration research. In the introduction, the author outlines the history of the use of migrant ...literary production as a source in Slovenian and international migration studies. Particular attention is paid to various polemics concerning the use of the term emigrant/immigrant literature and to major differences between disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to migrant literature. In the following sections, the article discusses some methodological challenges in this field, the achievements of Slovenian literary history in the framework of migration studies, the disproportion between the academic research into Slovenian emigrant literature compared to the literature of immigrants to Slovenia, and the question of the status of emigrant/immigrant literary production written in foreign languages. Članek obravnava nekatera ključna vprašanja pri preučevanju književnosti migrantov v sklopu raziskovanja migracij. Avtorica uvodoma povzema zgodovino vključevanja književne produkcije migrantov kot ...raziskovalnega gradiva v okviru preučevanja migracij v Sloveniji in v mednarodnem merilu.
The article is a result of empirical research among Slovenian cultural societies in other republics of the former Yugoslavia. The central part of the article presents the results of a survey carried ...out in the spring of 2012 by members of the Slovenian Migration Institute at ZRC SAZU in the context of the research project entitled "Slovenian Labour Migration to the Countries of Former Yugoslavia: from Settlers to Transmigrants". General introductory data about the past and current presence of Slovenians in the discussed territories are followed by a summary of the findings based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the survey results as well as the findings of the informative-strategic roundtables co-organised by the Institute at the time of the survey. The author discusses various aspects of childhood and impacts on childhood as they are mirrored in literary works written by sixty Slovenian emigre writers. She is interested in how emigre literature ...pictured for Slovenian emigrant children themes like childhood in the old country and life in the new homeland, what these children actually experienced within and outside their families in different historical periods of Slovenian emigration, and how all this influenced their world views as well as the typical features of the generation gap in migrant context. The author compares some thematic characteristics of Slovenian emigre literature with similar elements found in the works written by immigrant writers in Slovenia. Adapted from the source document.
Following a brief introduction to the earliest periods of Slovenian emigre literature in other parts of Europe, a short history of Slovenian ethnic periodicals in Western Europe prior to the Second ...World War is presented, along with the major Slovenian emigre authors of the time. The following section discusses contemporary Slovenian emigre writers in the rest of Europe, while the last part of the article focuses on the questions concerning their literary bilingualism. An important aspect of this study is a comparison of the writers' position, made on three levels: between different periods of time, between continents and between writers of diverse ethnic-cultural backgrounds. Academic and theoretical foundations of Slovenian emigration research were set at the University of Ljubljana in the 1930s. In the 1960s, more systematic, complex and multi-disciplinary Slovenian ...emigration research began to develop. As part of this process, Slovenian Migration Institute was established in 1982. The book was conceived upon the 30th anniversary of the Institute's affiliation to ZRC SAZU. Besides the Institute's researchers, some other scholars were invited to contribute chapters, especially members of younger generations who tend to test most up-to-date research approaches and treat their themes from new or under-researched angles. The central part of the book is thus thematically divided into three sections: “Selected aspects of Slovenian emigration research”, “Approaches, methods, categorisation”, and “Topical issues”. With such thematic structure and contents, the book is primarily aimed at touching upon some new questions concerning the present state and future development of Slovenian emigration research, taking into account contemporary international trends in migration studies as well as some specificities pertaining to Slovenian emigration.
Childhood in Slovenian emigration context is one of the least researched topics within Slovenian migration studies. The book ('Slovenian emigration in the light of children’s experience') tries to ...shed light upon it from the angles of different disciplines. Drawing on various definitions of children and categories of children in connection with migration, presented in the first chapter, the authors were mainly interested in those aspects that have been more or less neglected in the past. The second part of the book thus examines childhood in emigration context as it can be observed in the literary works and various websites created by Slovenian emigrants and their descendants. The third part of the book focuses on some specific migrant situations. The authors of these chapters have examined some intimate aspects of migrant experience of children of the so-called Alexandrian Women, children involved in forced migration during the Second World War, and children of diplomats. The fourth part of the book discusses the Yugoslav public care for the children in Slovenian diaspora between the World Wars, migration of children within the Yugoslav area, and the care for the children of Slovenian descent in Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of their learning and preservation of Slovenian language.
