The detection and measurement of gravitational-waves from coalescing neutron-star binary systems is an important science goal for groundbased gravitational-wave detectors. In addition to emitting ...gravitational-waves at frequencies that span the most sensitive bands of the LIGO and Virgo detectors, these sources are also amongst the most likely to produce an electromagnetic counterpart to the gravitational-wave emission. A joint detection of the gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals would provide a powerful new probe for astronomy. During the period between Sep 19 and Oct 20, 2010, the first low-latency search for gravitational-waves from binary inspirals in LIGO and Virgo data was conducted. Over the course of the science run, three gravitational-wave triggers passed all of the low-latency selection cuts. Of these, one was followed up by several of our observational partners. Analysis of the gravitational-wave data leads to an estimated false alarm rate of once every 6.4 days, falling far short of the requirement for a detection based solely on gravitational-wave data.
New poly(arylene ethers) containing side sulfo groups have been synthesized through the copolycondensation of 3,5-dinitrodiphenyl sulfone 4′-sulfonic acid and 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone with ...bicyclic aromatic bisphenols under the conditions of aromatic nucleophilic substitution. On the basis of the blends of these copolymers with sulfonated poly(arylene ester ether ketone), membranes with satisfactory mechanical characteristics and high proton conductivity have been prepared.

Background: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have shown high activity in postmenopausal women. However, as AIs do not suppress ovarian oestrogen synthesis, they are not effective in ...premenopausal women. The aim of this trial was to assess the efficacy of the combination of anastrozole and goserelin (LHRH agonist) in premenopausal women with advanced or metastatic hormonal receptor positive breast cancer. Methods: Premenopausal women with advanced estrogen receptor (ER) and/or progesterone receptor (PR) positive breast cancer were enrolled in this open, multicentre, non-comparative phase II trial and received anastrozole 1mg/day p.o. and gosereline 3.6 mg subcutaneously monthly until progression. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) assessed according to RECIST criteria. Results: Thirty-three patients (33), with a mean age of 44 (+ 5.9) years, PS 0–2, were enrolled from December 2001 to May 2005. All patients were ER positive and 75.8% PR positive and 6 patients (18.2%) received adjuvant treatment with anti estrogens. There were 4 (12.1%) complete responses (CR), 14 (42.4%) partial responses (PR), and 11 (33.3%) stable diseases (SD), giving an ORR of 54.6% (IC 95% 36.4; 71.9). Twenty-one (63.6%) patients showed a clinical benefit (CR+PR+SD≥24 weeks) for a median duration of 13.7 (IC 95% 8.74; 22.97) months. Median time to progression was 13 (6;33) months. The most commun AEs were hot flush in 29 (87.9%), arthralgia in 13 (39.4%) and nausea in 12 (36.4%) patients. Conclusions: The combination of anastrozole and gosereline is well tolerated and appears to be an effective treatment of premenopausal women with advanced breast cancer in this exploratory phase II trial.

After centuries of deforestation, forest cover reached its minimum in France at the turn of the 19th century, and has been constantly increasing since then, in particular in Provence. However, there ...has been little research on the biophysical, socioeconomic and landscape factors involved in these long term forest cover changes in France. The purpose of this study is to analyse the main land-use transitions since 1860, as well as the changing effect of biophysical (topography, lithology), socioeconomic (built areas, population) and landscape (distance from pre-existing forests) factors on forests and forest regrowth between 1860 and 2010 in the Luberon Park. The authors show that forests persisted until 1860 and thereafter developed on less accessible and less productive land (steep slopes, hard substrate, secluded locations). Lastly, they detail the differences in biophysical conditions between current forests according to their continuity over time. To end with, the implications of this forest recovery are discussed.
Après des siècles de diminution de sa surface, la forêt a connu un minimum historique en France vers le début du XIXe siècle puis a augmenté depuis, notamment en Provence. Les déterminants biophysiques, socioéconomiques et paysagers de ces changements forestiers à long terme ont cependant été assez peu explorés. Cette étude vise à analyser les transitions des principaux usages des terres depuis 1860 ainsi que l’évolution de l’effet de déterminants biophysiques (topographie, géologie), socioéconomiques (bâti, démographie) et paysagers (distance aux forêts préexistantes) sur la forêt et la reconquête forestière entre 1860 et 2010 dans le parc naturel régional du Luberon. Nous montrons que la forêt s’est maintenue jusqu’en 1860 et est réapparue depuis dans les secteurs les moins accessibles et productifs (pente forte, substrats durs, loin du bâti). En dernier lieu, nous précisons les différences de conditions biophysiques entre forêts actuelles selon leur continuité temporelle. En conclusion, nous discutons des implications de cette reconquête forestière.
