Customer engagement marketing—defined as a firm’s deliberate effort to motivate, empower, and measure customer contributions to marketing functions—marks a shift in marketing research and business ...practice. After defining and differentiating engagement marketing, the authors present a typology of its two primary forms and offer tenets that link specific strategic elements to customer outcomes and thereby firm performance, theorizing that the effectiveness of engagement marketing arises from the establishment of psychological ownership and self-transformation. The authors provide evidence in support of the derived tenets through case illustrations, as well as a quasi-experimental field test of the central tenet of engagement marketing.
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is a chronic liver disease characterised by the presence of hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and hepatocellular injury, for which no Food and Drug Administration ...(FDA)-approved treatment exists. FGF19 is a hormone that regulates bile acid synthesis and glucose homoeostasis. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of NGM282, an engineered FGF19 analogue, for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 study, we recruited patients aged 18–75 years with biopsy-confirmed non-alcoholic steatohepatitis as defined by the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis clinical research network histological scoring system, from hospitals and gastroenterology and liver clinics in Australia and the USA. Key eligibility criteria included a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease activity score of 4 or higher, stage 1–3 fibrosis, and at least 8% liver fat content. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1) via a web-based system and stratified by diabetic status to receive either 3 mg or 6 mg subcutaneous NGM282 or placebo. The primary endpoint was the absolute change from baseline to week 12 in liver fat content. Responders were patients who achieved a 5% or larger reduction in absolute liver fat content as measured by MRI-proton density fat fraction. Efficacy analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02443116.
Between July 14, 2015, and Aug 30, 2016, 166 patients were screened across 18 sites in Australia and the USA. 82 patients were randomly assigned to receive 3 mg NGM282 (n=27), 6 mg NGM282 (n=28), or placebo (n=27). At 12 weeks, 20 (74%) patients in the 3 mg dose group and 22 (79%) in the 6 mg dose group achieved at least a 5% reduction in absolute liver fat content from baseline (relative risk 10·0 95% CI 2·6–38·7 vs 11·4 3·0–43·8, respectively; p<0·0001 for both comparisons) versus two (7%) in the placebo group. Overall, 76 (93%) of 82 patients experienced at least one adverse event, most of which were grade 1 (55 67%), and only five (6%) were grade 3 or worse. The most commonly (≥10%) reported adverse events were injection site reactions (28 34%), diarrhoea (27 33%), abdominal pain (15 18%), and nausea (14 17%). These adverse events were reported more frequently in the NGM282 groups compared with the placebo group. No life-threatening events or patient deaths occurred during the study.
NGM282 produced rapid and significant reductions in liver fat content with an acceptable safety profile in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Further study of NGM282 is warranted in this patient population.

Retail shopping studies often conclude that desirable shopper behaviors, such as spending more money, indicate underlying approach motivation, while undesirable behaviors, such as leaving the store, indicate underlying avoidance motivation. However, hedonic consumption would seem to provide an opportunity not only for approaching fun and excitement but also for avoiding problems and stress in everyday life. This study investigates approach and avoidance motivations in a hedonic consumption context. Results show that both approach and avoidance motivation lead to heightened hedonic motivations for shopping and to more positive shopper evaluations. Additional investigation reveals several differences by gender and across four shopping contexts. Several theoretical and managerial implications are offered.
Serological antibody levels are a sensitive marker of pathogen exposure, and advances in multiplex assays have created enormous potential for large-scale, integrated infectious disease surveillance. ...Most methods to analyze antibody measurements reduce quantitative antibody levels to seropositive and seronegative groups, but this can be difficult for many pathogens and may provide lower resolution information than quantitative levels. Analysis methods have predominantly maintained a single disease focus, yet integrated surveillance platforms would benefit from methodologies that work across diverse pathogens included in multiplex assays.
We developed an approach to measure changes in transmission from quantitative antibody levels that can be applied to diverse pathogens of global importance. We compared age-dependent immunoglobulin G curves in repeated cross-sectional surveys between populations with differences in transmission for multiple pathogens, including: lymphatic filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti) measured before and after mass drug administration on Mauke, Cook Islands, malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) before and after a combined insecticide and mass drug administration intervention in the Garki project, Nigeria, and enteric protozoans (Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica), bacteria (enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp.), and viruses (norovirus groups I and II) in children living in Haiti and the USA. Age-dependent antibody curves fit with ensemble machine learning followed a characteristic shape across pathogens that aligned with predictions from basic mechanisms of humoral immunity. Differences in pathogen transmission led to shifts in fitted antibody curves that were remarkably consistent across pathogens, assays, and populations. Mean antibody levels correlated strongly with traditional measures of transmission intensity, such as the entomological inoculation rate for P. falciparum (Spearman's rho = 0.75). In both high- and low transmission settings, mean antibody curves revealed changes in population mean antibody levels that were masked by seroprevalence measures because changes took place above or below the seropositivity cutoff.
Age-dependent antibody curves and summary means provided a robust and sensitive measure of changes in transmission, with greatest sensitivity among young children. The method generalizes to pathogens that can be measured in high-throughput, multiplex serological assays, and scales to surveillance activities that require high spatiotemporal resolution. Our results suggest quantitative antibody levels will be particularly useful to measure differences in exposure for pathogens that elicit a transient antibody response or for monitoring populations with very high- or very low transmission, when seroprevalence is less informative. The approach represents a new opportunity to conduct integrated serological surveillance for neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and other infectious diseases with well-defined antigen targets.
Biodiversity and ecosystem service losses driven by land-use change are expected to intensify as a growing and more affluent global population requires more agricultural and forestry products, and ...teleconnections in the global economy lead to increasing remote environmental responsibility. By combining global biophysical and economic models, we show that, between the years 2000 and 2011, overall population and economic growth resulted in increasing total impacts on bird diversity and carbon sequestration globally, despite a reduction of land-use impacts per unit of gross domestic product (GDP). The exceptions were North America and Western Europe, where there was a reduction of forestry and agriculture impacts on nature accentuated by the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Biodiversity losses occurred predominantly in Central and Southern America, Africa and Asia with international trade an important and growing driver. In 2011, 33% of Central and Southern America and 26% of Africa's biodiversity impacts were driven by consumption in other world regions. Overall, cattle farming is the major driver of biodiversity loss, but oil seed production showed the largest increases in biodiversity impacts. Forestry activities exerted the highest impact on carbon sequestration, and also showed the largest increase in the 2000-2011 period. Our results suggest that to address the biodiversity crisis, governments should take an equitable approach recognizing remote responsibility, and promote a shift of economic development towards activities with low biodiversity impacts.
Previous research on both hedonic and utilitarian shopping value has focused much effort on the antecedents of shopping value with very little emphasis on the outcomes of shopping value. This study ...investigates the complex interrelationships between satisfaction with the retailer, hedonic and utilitarian shopping value, and important retail outcomes. Both hedonic and utilitarian shopping values are found to influence key retail outcomes. The results also support predicted differences in the relative influence of hedonic and utilitarian shopping value. Hedonic and utilitarian shopping values are also found to moderate a number of relationships between satisfaction and retail outcomes.
Touch is a powerful means to explore one's environment and a critical sensory modality for information gathering. Previous research has shown the positive effects of product touch on key outcomes ...such as perceived product ownership and choice confidence, yet only in the context of consumers examining a solitary product or a small choice set. The current research draws on the choice overload hypothesis to examine whether a large choice set size attenuates the positive effects of touch. Our findings suggest that product touch results in more positive outcomes when choice sets are small (vs. large), with perceived choice difficulty mediating this effect (Experiment 1). The interactive effect of choice set size and touch is diminished in situations where touch conveys limited additional product information (Experiment 2). Further, we find that touching a large choice set can be advantageous among certain consumers, as those with a maximizing mindset respond more favorably to a large choice set when they can touch the items versus not (Experiment 3). We discuss research implications for the literatures on product touch, choice overload, and consumer mindsets, and practical implications for marketers as pertaining to assortment management, message framing, and online retail shopping environments.
The present study examined the association between patient-reported anxiety and postcardiac surgery mortality and major morbidity. Frailty Assessment Before Cardiac Surgery was a prospective ...multicenter cohort study of elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass surgery and/or valve repair or replacement) at 4 tertiary care hospitals from 2008 to 2009. The patients were evaluated a mean of 2 days preoperatively with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, a validated questionnaire assessing depression and anxiety in hospitalized patients. The primary predictor variable was a high level of anxiety, defined by a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score of ≥11. The main outcome measure was all-cause mortality or major morbidity (e.g., stroke, renal failure, prolonged ventilation, deep sternal wound infection, or reoperation) occurring during the index hospitalization. Multivariable logistic regression analysis examined the association between high preoperative anxiety and all-cause mortality/major morbidity, adjusting for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons predicted risk, age, gender, and depression symptoms. A total of 148 patients (mean age 75.8 ± 4.4 years; 34% women) completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. High levels of preoperative anxiety were present in 7% of patients. No differences were found in the type of surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgeons predicted risk across the preoperative levels of anxiety. After adjusting for potential confounders, high preoperative anxiety was remained independently predictive of postoperative mortality or major morbidity (odds ratio 5.1, 95% confidence interval 1.3 to 20.2; p = 0.02). In conclusion, although high levels of anxiety were present in few patients anticipating cardiac surgery, this conferred a strong and independent heightened risk of mortality or major morbidity.

Exchange events are fundamental building blocks of business relationships and essential to relationship development. However, some events contribute to incremental relationship development, as ...predicted by life cycle theories, whereas others spark "turning points" with dramatic impacts on the relationship. Such transformational relationship events are encounters between exchange partners that significantly disconfirm relational expectations (positively or negatively); they result in dramatic, discontinuous change to the relationship's trajectory and often reformulate the relationship itself. With a three-study, multimethod design, the authors (1) establish a foundation for differentiating dramatic and incremental exchange events on the basis of relational versus product expectations and disconfirmations, thus revealing that strong relationships benefit product disconfirmations but harm relational disconfirmations, and (2) conceptualize, define, and differentiate transformational relationship events from other types of disconfirming events and then link them to exchange performance.
