Perceived working conditions lead to various negative outcomes for employee behaviors, including turnover intentions. Although potential mediators for these relationships were previously identified, ...the importance of meaning of work has not yet been investigated. This study examines the role of this psychological resource as a mediator for the relationships between perceived working conditions and turnover intentions in a sample of 336 French workers from different job contexts. Results show that adverse working conditions were positively and significantly associated with turnover intentions. Meaning of work is negatively related to both perceived working conditions and turnover intentions. Mediation analyses for meaning of work demonstrated indirect effects of several adverse working conditions on turnover intentions. The role of meaning of work as a psychological resource for employees facing adverse working conditions is discussed, especially regarding its implications for research and practice within organizational contexts.
La recherche vise à examiner les processus de déconstruction et de reconstruction de sens dans les études menant à la décision de réorientation intra-universitaire volontaire d’étudiant·es. Le corpus ...a été recueilli par entretiens semi-directifs auprès de dix étudiant·es français·es. Les données font l’objet d’une double analyse, thématique et manuelle ainsi que lexicale et automatisée (logiciel Alceste). Les résultats soulignent le rôle du sens des études dans la décision de réorientation et proposent une mise en lumière novatrice d’un processus nommé dé-re-construction de sens qui combine la déconstruction du sens et sa reconstruction, deux processus imbriqués, voire concomitants. Les émotions, le ressenti d’incertitude, le mal-être psychologique ainsi que les difficultés et désillusions dans la formation suivie contribuent à la déconstruction de sens tandis que la rencontre avec un autrui significatif, la connaissance de soi et la recherche d’épanouissement favorisent la construction de sens et d’un nouvel équilibre auquel la réorientation peut contribuer.

The aim of the research was to examine the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of meaning of education leading to the decision by students to voluntarily reorientate themselves within the university. The corpus was collected through semi-directive interviews with ten French students. The data was analysed both thematically and manually, and lexically and automatically (using Alceste software). The results highlight the role of the students’ meaning of education in the decision to reorientate and offer an innovative insight into the process of de-re-construction of meaning, which combines the deconstruction of meaning and its reconstruction, two overlapping and even concomitant processes. Emotions, feelings of uncertainty, psychological discomfort, and difficulties and disillusionment with the followed studies all contribute to the deconstruction of meaning, while encounters with a significant other, self-knowledge and the search for self-fulfilment encourage the construction of meaning and a new balance, to which reorientation can contribute.

The first aim of this study was to validate a French version of the Decent Work Scale (DWS) proposed by Duffy, Allan, Blustein, England, Douglass, Ferreira, and Santos (2017). Our second aim was to ...gain insight into French people's representations of decent work using a qualitative approach. A representative sample of 300 French employees completed the DWS, as well as measures of life satisfaction, work satisfaction, work-family conflict, meaningful work, and withdrawal intentions. Participants also responded to an open-ended question asking them to define decent work. Confirmatory factor analyses, as well as correlation and internal-consistency analyses, indicated satisfactory internal and convergent validity for the French version of the DWS. The qualitative results showed that French representations for decent work only partially overlapped with the initial conceptualizations of decent work in the United States. These findings are discussed in reference to notions of decent work in vocational psychology and to the cultural context of work within French society.
•We tested Duffy's five-factor model of decent work on a sample of French workers.•The results indicate satisfactory psychometric properties.•We examined French representations of decent work using a qualitative approach.•The results show some additional dimensions in French decent-work representations.•The expressive dimensions of work are important to the French.
