This collection of seven essays provides a general theoretical discussion of the overall speech program for the elementary and junior high schools and develops several aspects of instruction in ...detail. Dorothy C. Higgenbotham formulates a comprehensive proposal for the development of a total speech program. The essentially symbol-centered nature of speech is explored by Ruth G. Strickland in writing about teaching oral language, and by John W. Black in treating the teacher's opportunities for improving the speech of children. The second three essays urge that particular speech skills be more systematically treated in the elementary and junior high program. Geraldine Brain Siks' essay deals with teaching drama, Jere Veilleaux with teaching oral reading, and Carroll C. Arnold's with teaching formal discourse. The final essay by Edward B. Jenkinson and Donald A. Seybold discusses an unending problem for teachers and students of oral discourse--finding something to say. (Author/CF)
