Dual-antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin and a P2Y12 receptor inhibitor is the standard treatment for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The availability of different P2Y12 ...receptor inhibitors (clopidogrel, prasugrel, ticagrelor) with varying levels of potency has enabled physicians to contemplate individualized treatment regimens, which may include escalation or de-escalation of P2Y12-inhibiting therapy. Indeed, individualized and alternative DAPT strategies may be chosen according to the clinical setting (stable coronary artery disease vs. acute coronary syndrome), the stage of the disease (early- vs. long-term treatment), and patient risk for ischemic and bleeding complications. A tailored DAPT approach may be potentially guided by platelet function testing (PFT) or genetic testing. Although the routine use of PFT or genetic testing in percutaneous coronary intervention–treated patients is not recommended, recent data have led to an update in guideline recommendations that allow considering selective use of PFT for DAPT de-escalation. However, guidelines do not expand on when to implement the selective use of such assays into decision making for personalized treatment approaches. Therefore, an international expert consensus group of key leaders from North America, Asia, and Europe with expertise in the field of antiplatelet treatment was convened. This document updates 2 prior consensus papers on this topic and summarizes the contemporary updated expert consensus recommendations for the selective use of PFT or genotyping in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

The electrolyte additives vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) are well known for increasing the lifetime of a Li-ion battery cell by supporting the formation of an effective ...solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the anode. In this study combined simultaneous electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and operando electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) are employed together with in situ gas analysis (OEMS) to study the influence of VC and FEC on the passivation process and the interphase properties at carbon-based anodes. In small quantities both additives reduce the initial interphase mass loading by 30–50%, but only VC also effectively prevents continuous side reactions and improves anode passivation significantly. VC and FEC are both reduced at potentials above 1 V vs. Li+/Li in the first cycle and change the SEI composition which causes an increase of the SEI shear storage modulus by over one order of magnitude in both cases. As a consequence, the ion diffusion coefficient and conductivity in the interphase is also significantly affected. While small quantities of VC in the initial electrolyte increase the SEI conductivity, FEC decomposition products hinder charge transport through the SEI and thus increase overall anode impedance significantly.

Digital in-line holography is a versatile method to obtain lens-less images of small particles, such as aerosol particles, ranging from several to over one hundred microns in size. It has been shown ...theoretically, and verified by measurement, that a particle's extinction cross section can also be obtained from a digital hologram. The process involves a straightforward integration, but if noise is present it fails to give accurate results. Here we present a method to reduce the noise in measured holograms of single particles for the purpose of rendering the cross-section estimation more effective. The method involves masking the complex-valued particle image-amplitude obtained from a noisy hologram followed by a Fresnel transformation to generate a new noise-reduced hologram. Examples are given at two wavelengths, 440 nm and 1040 nm, where the cross section is obtained for a micro-sphere particle and several non-spherical particles approximately 50 microns in size.
We present a suite of nine scenarios of future emissions trajectories of
anthropogenic sources, a key deliverable of the ScenarioMIP experiment within
CMIP6. Integrated assessment model results for ...14 different emissions species
and 13 emissions sectors are provided for each scenario with consistent
transitions from the historical data used in CMIP6 to future trajectories using
automated harmonization before being downscaled to provide higher emissions
source spatial detail. We find that the scenarios span a wide range of
end-of-century radiative forcing values, thus making this set of scenarios ideal
for exploring a variety of warming pathways. The set of scenarios is bounded on
the low end by a 1.9 W m−2 scenario, ideal for analyzing a world with
end-of-century temperatures well below 2 ∘C, and on the high end by a 8.5 W m−2
scenario, resulting in an increase in warming of nearly 5 ∘C over pre-industrial
levels. Between these two extremes, scenarios are provided such that differences
between forcing outcomes provide statistically significant regional temperature
outcomes to maximize their usefulness for downstream experiments within CMIP6.
A wide range of scenario data products are provided for the CMIP6 scientific
community including global, regional, and gridded emissions datasets.

Digital in-line holography (DIH) is an established method to image small particles in a manner where image reconstruction is performed computationally post-measurement. This ability renders it ideal ...for aerosol characterization, where particle collection or confinement is often difficult, if not impossible. Conventional DIH provides a gray-scale image akin to a particle's silhouette, and while it gives the particle size and shape, there is little information about the particle material. Based on the recognition that the spectral reflectance of a surface is partly determined by the material, we demonstrate a method to image free-flowing particles with DIH in color with the eventual aim to differentiate materials based on the observed color. Holograms formed by the weak backscattered light from individual particles illuminated by red, green, and blue lasers are recorded by a color sensor. Images are reconstructed from the holograms and then layered to form a color image, the color content of which is quantified by chromaticity analysis to establish a representative signature. A variety of mineral dust aerosols are studied where the different signatures suggest the possibility to differentiate particle material. The ability of the method to resolve the inhomogeneous composition within a single particle in some cases is shown as well.
An operando electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) with simultaneous in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been developed and applied to ...study the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on copper current collectors in Li ion batteries. The findings are backed by EIS simulations and complementary analytical techniques, such as online electrochemical mass spectrometry (OEMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The evolution of mass and the mechanical properties of the SEI are directly correlated to the electrode impedance. Electrolyte reduction at the anode carbon active material initiates dissolution, diffusion, and deposition of reaction side products throughout the cell and increases electrolyte viscosity and the ohmic cell resistance as a result. On Cu the reduction of CuO x and HF occurs at >1.5 V and forms an initial LiF-rich interphase while electrolyte solvent reduction at <0.8 V vs Li+/Li adds a second, less rigid layer on top. Both the shear storage modulus and viscosity of the SEI generally increase upon cycling butalong with the SEI Li+ diffusion coefficientalso respond reversibly to electrode potential, likely as a result of Li+/EC interfacial concentration changes. Combined EIS-EQCM-D provides unique prospects for further studies of the highly dynamic structure–function relationships of electrode interphases in Li ion batteries.

Solar Probe Cup (SPC) is a Faraday cup instrument on board NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft designed to make rapid measurements of thermal coronal and solar wind plasma. The spacecraft is ...in a heliocentric orbit that takes it closer to the Sun than any previous spacecraft, allowing measurements to be made where the coronal and solar wind plasma is being heated and accelerated. The SPC instrument was designed to be pointed directly at the Sun at all times, allowing the solar wind (which is flowing primarily radially away from the Sun) to be measured throughout the orbit. The instrument is capable of measuring solar wind ions with an energy between 100 and 6000 V (protons with speeds from 139 to 1072 km s−1). It also measures electrons with an energy/charge between 100 and 1500 V. SPC has been designed to have a wide dynamic range that is capable of measuring protons and alpha particles at the closest perihelion (9.86 solar radii from the center of the Sun) and out to 0.25 au. Initial observations from the first orbit of PSP indicate that the instrument is functioning well.

offset credits may incentivize seagrass restoration projects and help reverse greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from global seagrass loss. However, no study has quantified net GHG removal ...from the atmosphere from a seagrass restoration project, which would require coupled C
stock and GHG flux enhancement measurements, or determined whether the creditable offset benefit can finance the restoration. We measured all of the necessary GHG accounting parameters in the 7-km
Zostera marina (eelgrass) meadow in Virginia, U.S.A., part of the largest, most cost-effective meadow restoration to date, to provide the first seagrass offset finance test-of-concept. Restoring seagrass removed 9,600 tCO
from the atmosphere over 15 years but also enhanced both CH
and N
O production, releasing 950 tCO
e. Despite tripling the N
O flux to 0.06 g m
yr
and increasing CH
8-fold to 0.8 g m
yr
, the meadow now offsets 0.42 tCO
e ha
yr
, which is roughly equivalent to the seagrass sequestration rate for GHG inventory accounting but lower than the rates for temperate and tropical forests. The financial benefit for this highly successful project, $87 K at $10 MtCO
e
, defrays ~10% of the restoration cost. Managers should also consider seagrass co-benefits, which provide additional incentives for seagrass restoration.
Anthropogenic increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas
concentrations are the main driver of current and future climate change. The
integrated assessment community has quantified anthropogenic ...emissions for
the shared socio-economic pathway (SSP) scenarios, each of which represents
a different future socio-economic projection and political environment.
Here, we provide the greenhouse gas concentrations for these SSP scenarios
– using the reduced-complexity climate–carbon-cycle model MAGICC7.0. We
extend historical, observationally based concentration data with SSP
concentration projections from 2015 to 2500 for 43 greenhouse gases with monthly and latitudinal resolution. CO2 concentrations by 2100 range
from 393 to 1135 ppm for the lowest (SSP1-1.9) and highest (SSP5-8.5)
emission scenarios, respectively. We also provide the concentration
extensions beyond 2100 based on assumptions regarding the trajectories of fossil
fuels and land use change emissions, net negative emissions, and the
fraction of non-CO2 emissions. By 2150, CO2 concentrations in the
lowest emission scenario are approximately 350 ppm and approximately plateau
at that level until 2500, whereas the highest fossil-fuel-driven scenario
projects CO2 concentrations of 1737 ppm and reaches concentrations
beyond 2000 ppm by 2250. We estimate that the share of CO2 in the total
radiative forcing contribution of all considered 43 long-lived greenhouse
gases increases from 66 % for the present day to roughly 68 % to 85 % by
the time of maximum forcing in the 21st century. For this estimation,
we updated simple radiative forcing parameterizations that reflect the Oslo
Line-By-Line model results. In comparison to the representative concentration pathways (RCPs), the five main SSPs
(SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5) are more evenly spaced
and extend to lower 2100 radiative forcing and temperatures. Performing two
pairs of six-member historical ensembles with CESM1.2.2, we estimate the
effect on surface air temperatures of applying latitudinally and seasonally
resolved GHG concentrations. We find that the ensemble differences in the
March–April–May (MAM) season provide a regional warming in higher northern
latitudes of up to 0.4 K over the historical period, latitudinally averaged
of about 0.1 K, which we estimate to be comparable to the upper bound
(∼5 % level) of natural variability. In comparison to the
comparatively straight line of the last 2000 years, the greenhouse gas
concentrations since the onset of the industrial period and this studies'
projections over the next 100 to 500 years unequivocally depict a
“hockey-stick” upwards shape. The SSP concentration time series derived in
this study provide a harmonized set of input assumptions for long-term
climate science analysis; they also provide an indication of the wide set of
futures that societal developments and policy implementations can lead to –
ranging from multiple degrees of future warming on the one side to
approximately 1.5 ∘C warming on the other.
The reflection of light from a metal film, i.e., a mirror, is among the most fundamental and well-understood effects in optics. If the film thickness is greater than the wavelength, reflection is ...strong and is explained in simple terms by the Fresnel equations. For film thickness much less than the wavelength, reflection is far weaker and more exotic effects become possible. This is especially so if the light illuminating the film is pulsed at the femtosecond time scale. In this work, a phenomenon is proposed where few-femtosecond laser pulses temporarily modify a thin metal film’s optical properties via processes that appear linear and classical in nature. By casting a pulsed standing-wave pattern across the metal surface, we consider the possibility that conduction electrons are redistributed to create temporary regions of partly enhanced or reduced density without the excitation of inter-band transitions. The process would constitute a temporary change to the conductivity of the metal, and thus, may be observable as changes to the metal’s transmittance and reflectance. In regions where the density is enhanced (reduced), the transmittance is decreased (increased). The concept is termed Electromagnetically Induced Modification (EIM) and is premised on the fact that the pulse length is shorter than the relaxation time of the conduction electrons. An experiment is conducted to test the concept by measuring the change in reflectance and transmittance of gold films with thickness ranging from 20–300 Angstrom. The results show that the film’s transmittance decreases only when the standing-wave pattern is present. As the pulse length is increased, or as the film thickness is increased, the changes disappear. The changes show little dependence on the pulse intensity as it is varied by a factor of two. To gain further insight, the Drude theory is used to develop a simplified model for EIM, which qualitatively agrees with the observations. However, neither the experiment nor the model can prove the validity of the EIM concept. As such, an assessment is made for the potential of alternative well-known processes to explain the observations.
