The Middle East Technical University (METU) Ankara Campus is one of the earliest and most prominent modern-period university campuses that resulted from an architectural competition in the 1960s in ...Turkey. However, METU Campus, as a modern-era heritage place, faces various threats, including pressure for new urban development. In addition, the increasing number of students and contemporary educational needs require changes in the physical infrastructure and campus settings. Thus, all these threaten the tangible and intangible values of the Campus. In this regard, conserving the METU Campus requires a multidimensional approach that considers a wide range of values and problems; herein, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) becomes a useful tool for dealing with this complex work. Accordingly, the METU Campus GIS Project METU_GIS was developed to document and understand the multidimensional characteristics of the METU Campus, assess its values, and propose solutions to current issues while considering its values and potentials. Accordingly, the METU_GIS defines conservation policies and strategies that ensure the conservation and sustainability of the Campus as a living modern heritage place. Furthermore, the METU_GIS is a GIS-based conservation management plan created for a modern period campus for the first time in Turkey. Hence, it became an essential basis and a tool for conserving and managing the METU Campus as a modern living heritage place. All in all, the METU_GIS proves that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essential tools that can be used in the documentation, conservation, and monitoring of modern heritage places.

The population of cities is increasing rapidly day by day, and it is predicted that this increase will continue in the following years. Accordingly, population growth creates a significant pressure ...in many different domains of cities such as infrastructure, traffic, energy, and environment. Smart cities come forward as a useful option to struggle with the pressure on cities caused by overwhelming population growth and to make cities liveable and sustainable. Smart city approach creates gains in the fields of sustainable development, competitiveness and environmental sustainability with its ability to transform information into economic, social and environmental benefits. However, smart city services and applications are mostly designed as independent and unrelated units so this approach causes isolated and heterogeneous data and technology islands. As the result, data flow problem occurs between vertical applications and service suppliers, and this interoperability problem causes emergence of independent silos in smart cities. Such silos hinders data integration, prevent citizens and public administrations benefit fully from smart cities, and cause vendor lock-in. In order to use the full potential of smart city approach, it’s vital to secure interoperability systems and applications of smart cities. In this study, interoperability terms and their necessity for smart city ecosystem will be addressed. Afterwards, Smart City Interoperability Model’s (SCIM) contributions to semantic, technical and operational interoperability will be discussed.
Cities are facing numerous challenges because of the unprecedented growth of population all over the world. In this context, smart city stands out as a viable option to improve quality of life. Smart ...city, with its ability to transform the information into economic, social and environmental benefits, offers acquisitions in the fields of sustainable development, competitiveness and environmental sustainability. However, the cost of implementing and maintaining smart city applications on a large scale reveals the necessity to choose the right smart city application at the beginning of smart city transformation. In order to determine which smart city application should be used in smart city domain, the current situation and needs of the city should be analysed effectively. Maturity assessment can be used as a tool to understand the existing conditions of a city. In this study, Turkey's smart city approach will be addressed and Smart City Maturity Assessment Model of Turkey will be introduced with the preparation and implementation process. Consequently, the impact of the Smart City Maturity Assessment Model on selection of smart city applications will be discussed with the result of maturity assessment which is implemented on 4 cities of Turkey.
BackgroundAdvancements in embolic materials require microcatheters compatible with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with detachable tip microcatheters (DTMs) emerging as a notable innovation aimed at ...reducing the risk of catheter entrapment during embolization procedures. This study aims to compare the effectiveness, safety, and DMSO compatibility of DTMs with non-detachable tip microcatheters (Non-DTMs) in the treatment of neurovascular diseases through embolization.MethodFollowing PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases until February 25, 2024. Primary outcomes were technical success and microcatheter-related complications, with a meta-analysis performed using a random-effects model to calculate proportions and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (Cl).ResultsFindings indicate that DTMs exhibited comparable rates of technical success (98.3% vs. 97.6%, p=0.68), favorable outcomes (93.9% vs. 93.6%, p=0.89), and microcatheter-related complications compared to Non-DTMs. (Figure 1) Notably, DTMs demonstrated a 0.0% rate of microcatheter entrapment and hemorrhagic complications, with intended detachment achieved with minimal complications in 38.7% of cases (95% CI = 24.91–54.63), while premature detachment was rare (0.1%; 95% CI = 0.00–1.23). (Figure 2) Comparative studies revealed no significant difference in microcatheter-related complications between DTM and Non-DTM groups. (Figure 2).ConclusionOur study shows the safety and efficacy of DTMs in embolization treatments, emphasizing their compatibility with DMSO-based embolic agents and their potential to enhance patient outcomes in neuroendovascular treatments. BackgroundAcute ischemic stroke (AIS) poses significant challenges to global healthcare systems, emphasizing the need for effective treatment modalities such as mechanical thrombectomy (MT). The ...choice between biplane and monoplane angiography systems for MT remains debated, with potential implications for procedural quality and clinical outcomes.MethodWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines in electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus until March 26, 2023. The primary outcome was a favorable outcome defined as a modified Rankin score (mRS) 0–2 at 90 days following procedure. The secondary outcomes included successful recanalization defined as modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (mTICI) score ≥ 2B, procedure time (min), flouroscopy time (min), and contrast volume (ml).ResultsA comprehensive search strategy identified seven eligible studies, comprising a total of 1,069 patients in the biplane group and 493 patients in the monoplane group. Monoplane group had significantly higher favorable outcome compared to the biplane group (OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.13–1.80; p = 0.003). (Figure 1) The rates of successful recanalization, procedure time, fluoroscopy time and contrast volume were comparable between monoplane and biplane groups. (Figure 2).ConclusionBiplane and monoplane angiography systems demonstrated similar technical outcomes in MT for AIS. While biplane angiography may offer advantages in functional independence, no significant differences were found in procedure time, successful recanalization, fluoroscopy time, or contrast volume. This letter presents unsupervised hyperspectral-image classification based on fuzzy-clustering algorithms that spatially exploit membership relations. Not only is the conventional fuzzy c-means ...approach used to demonstrate the advantage of using membership relations but also Gustafson-Kessel clustering, which uses an adaptive distance norm, is, for the first time, used for the segmentation of hyperspectral images. A novel approach to include spatial information in the segmentation process is achieved by making use of spatial relations of fuzzy-membership functions among neighbor pixels. Two- and three-dimensional Gaussian filtering of fuzzy-membership degrees is utilized for this purpose. A novel phase-correlation-based similarity measure is used to further enhance the performance of the proposed approach by taking spatial relations into account for pixels with similar spectral characteristics only. It is shown that the proposed approach provides superior clustering performance for hyperspectral images.
We investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of propolis on bleomycin induced lung fibrosis and compared these effects to prednisolone treatment. Forty rats were divided into four ...groups of ten: group 1 was treated with intratracheal infusion of 0.2 ml physiological saline followed by daily treatment with 0.5 ml physiological saline for 20 days. In the remaining groups (groups 2 − 4), 5 mg/kg bleomycin was given via the trachea. Rats in group 2 were given 0.5 ml physiological saline. Rats in group 3 were treated with 100 mg/kg propolis, and 10 mg/kg prednisolone was given to rats in group 4. The treatments for all groups were continued for 20 days. On postoperative day 21, blood and lung samples were taken for biochemistry, histopathology and electron microscopy evaluation. We compared oxidative stress parameters and found lower malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase levels, and higher total sulfhydryl levels and catalase activities for the bleomycin + propolis group than for the bleomycin and bleomycin + prednisolone groups. The highest mean fibrosis score was detected in the bleomycin group. Although the mean fibrosis scores of the bleomycin + propolis and bleomycin + prednisolone groups were not significantly different, electron microscopy revealed that propolis diminished bleomycin induced lung fibrosis more effectively than prednisolone. The effects of propolis might be due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
This paper presents an unsupervised hyperspectral image segmentation with a new subtractive-clustering-based similarity segmentation and a novel cluster validation method using one-class support ...vector (SV) machine (OC-SVM). An estimation of the correct number of clusters is an important task in hyperspectral image segmentation. The proposed cluster validity measure is based on the power of spectral discrimination (PWSD) measure and utilizes the advantage of the inherited cluster contour definition feature of OC-SVM. Hence, this novel cluster validity method is referred to as SV-PWSD. SVs found by OC-SVM are located at the minimum distance to the hyperplane in the feature space and at the arbitrarily shaped cluster contours in the input space. SV-PWSD guides the segmentation/clustering process to find the optimal number of clusters in hyperspectral data. Because of the high computational load of subtractive clustering and OC-SVM, a subset of the image (only ground-truth data) is initially used in the clustering and validation phases. Then, it is proposed to use K -nearest neighbor classification, with the already clustered subset being used as training data, to project the initial clustering results onto the entire data set.
Aims To determine the type, extent and effects of workplace violence among residents during postgraduate speciality training in various departments of medical schools in Turkey. Methods A ...cross-sectional survey was conducted in seven medical schools representing all geographical regions of Turkey. All physicians in speciality training in the selected medical schools were asked to complete a semi-structured ‘violence questionnaire’ addressing the type (emotional, physical and sexual) and extent of violence experienced, the perpetrators of the violence and the victim's reactions to the experience. Results A total of 1712 residents out of 2442 completed the questionnaire. In all, 68% indicated they had experienced some form of workplace violence, 67% had experienced verbal violence, 16% had experienced physical violence and 3% had experienced sexual violence. The victims' most prevalent reactions to violence included being deeply disturbed but feeling they had to cope with it for the sake of their career (39%), being distressed (26%) but considering that such events are common in all occupations and discounting it and being confused and bewildered and unsure how to respond (19%). The most frequently named perpetrators of verbal violence were relatives/friends of patients (36%) and academic staff (36%), followed by other residents/senior residents (21%), patients (20%), heads of department (13%) and non-medical hospital staff (6%). Conclusions Physicians in speciality training in medical schools in Turkey are subject to significant verbal, physical or sexual violence. Precautions to prevent such exposure are urgently needed.
