Over the years, collaboration between academic institutions in the global North and institutions in Africa has been characterized by an evolutionary process from pure capacity building to equal ...partnerships, from social commitment to matching interests, and from specific needs to global strategies. This book contains the partial proceedings of a symposium dedicated to concern for basic education for the masses. The book includes a position paper that focuses on education in relation to its ...cultural setting, socio-economic context, and partnerships in research. The result of the meeting was the identification of research that seemed instrumental in addressing problematic issues in education in developing countries. The outcomes of the research were expected to contribute to an improvement of the accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness of education. The volume contains 28 articles written by participants in the symposium, beginning with a position paper that provides the theoretical framework. The articles are grouped into four sections. The first section (Education, Culture and Development) contains a review of the major problems that developing countries face in providing adequate and relevant education to nations, and three articles highlighting the relationships among education, culture, and development. Section 2, "Education and Culture," deals more specifically with the link between education and culture, indigenous knowledge and indigenous learning, popular culture, creating of a national identity, and the relevance of social research in intervention systems. The third section is "Education and Productive Life." Articles in this section discuss education for self employment at the primary school level, work experience programs in secondary schools, and technical and vocational training for girls. Over the past few decades the planned and deliberate use of communication has taken an increasingly prominent place in development strategies. It was realized that no change in the lives of people ...covered by development programmes will take place without the development of appropriate values, attitudes and stock of knowledge in the minds of the people. This notion put due emphasis on education and communication as important instruments for development. Depending on the scope, approach and target audience of the programme, communication activities have taken the form of information transfers by mass media, instructors, extensionists, workshops, demonstrations, theatre performances, film shows and many others.
Crying is a uniquely human behavior, the functions of which are at present not completely understood. We hypothesized that tears promote the perception of morally relevant traits and states such as ...sincerity, honesty, and remorse, which facilitate social bonding and we, therefore, predicted that tears would reduce the punishments proposed for transgressors. Participants were exposed to photographs of tearful people and the same pictures with the tears digitally removed, together with brief descriptions of everyday transgressions (Study 1,
N
= 71) and crimes (Study 2;
N
= 359). The dependent variables were the judgment of the model’s emotionality (Study 1), sincerity (situational in Study 1 and trait in Study 2), and kindness, remorse, and proposed punishment (Study 2 only). As expected, models with visible tears were rated as more emotional and reliable and were also judged as kinder and more remorseful than tearless transgressors. However, the more positive perception of tearful transgressors only translated into more lenient punishment in the case of drunk driving. In conclusion, although tears make transgressors appear more sincere, reliable, kind and remorseful, they do not necessarily affect proposed punishments for the transgression.
