Abbreviated We review the results of high dispersion spectroscopy of 17 circumnuclear starforming regions (CNSFRs) in 3 nearby early spiral galaxies, NGC2903, NGC3310 and NGC3351. We find that single ...Gaussian fitting to the H\(\beta\) and OIII5007A line profiles results in velocity dispersions around 32km/s and 52km/s, respectively, while the IR CaII triplet cross-correlation technique provides stellar velocity dispersion values close to 50km/s. Even though multiple kinematical components are present, the relation between gas velocity dispersion and Balmer emission line luminosity (L-sigma relation) reproduces the correlation for disk giant HII regions albeit with a larger scatter. The scatter in the L-sigma relation is considerably reduced when theoretical evolutionary corrections are applied suggesting that an age range is present in the sample of CNSFRs. To analyse the observed complex profiles, we performed multiple Gaussian component fits to the Hbeta and OIII?5007A lines obtaining optimal fits with two Gaussians of different width. These best fits indicate that the narrower component has average velocity dispersion close to 23km/s while the broader component shows average values in the range 50-60km/s for both lines, close to the observed stellar velocity dispersions. The fluxes of the broad and narrow Hbeta components are similar. This is not the case for OIII5007A for which the broad components have higher fluxes than the narrow ones, thus producing a clear segregation in their OIII/Hbeta ratios. We suggest a possible scenario for understanding the behaviour of CNSFRs in the L-sigma and sigma_gas-sigma_star diagrams involving an inner gaseous disk responsible for the narrow component of the emission lines.
We present a near infrared study focused on the detection and characterization of the youngest stellar component of the NGC 604 giant star-forming region, in the Triangulum galaxy (M 33). By means of ...color-color diagrams derived from the photometry of JHKs images taken with Gemini-NIRI, we have found 68 candidate massive young stellar objects. The spatial distribution of these sources matches the areas where previous studies suggested that star formation might be taking place, and the high spatial resolution of our deep NIRI imaging allows to pinpoint the star-forming knots. An analysis of the fraction of objects that show infrared excess suggests that the star formation is still active, supporting the presence of a second generation of stars being born, although the evidence for or against sequential star formation does not seem to be conclusive.

In this 26-week, double-blind trial, 279 patients with HbA1c 7-10%, BMI 20-45 kg/m(2), and moderate renal impairment (estimated glomerular filtration rate eGFR 30-59 mL/min/1.73 m(2); MDRD) were randomized (1:1) to once-daily liraglutide 1.8 mg (n = 140) or placebo (n = 139).
The estimated treatment difference in HbA1c from baseline to week 26 was -0.66% (-7.25 mmol/mol) (95% CI -0.90 to -0.43 -9.82 to -4.69), P < 0.0001). Fasting plasma glucose decreased more with liraglutide (-1.22 mmol/L -22.0 mg/dL) than with placebo (-0.57 mmol/L -10.3 mg/dL, P = 0.036). There was a greater reduction in body weight with liraglutide (-2.41 kg) than with placebo (-1.09 kg, P = 0.0052). No changes in renal function were observed (eGFR relative ratio to baseline: -1% liraglutide, +1% placebo; estimated treatment ratio ETR 0.98, P = 0.36). The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (GI) adverse effects (liraglutide, 35.7%; placebo, 17.5%). No difference in hypoglycemic episodes was observed between treatment groups (event rate/100 patient-years of exposure: liraglutide, 30.47; placebo, 40.08; P = 0.54). The estimated ratio to baseline for lipase was 1.33 for liraglutide and 0.97 for placebo (ETR 1.37, P < 0.0001).
Liraglutide did not affect renal function and demonstrated better glycemic control, with no increase in hypoglycemia risk but with higher withdrawals due to GI adverse events than placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and moderate renal impairment.
A method is presented for subpixel modeling, mapping, and classification in hyperspectral imagery using learned block-structured discriminative dictionaries, where each block is adapted and optimized ...to represent a material in a compact and sparse manner. The spectral pixels are modeled by linear combinations of subspaces defined by the learned dictionary atoms, allowing for linear mixture analysis. This model provides flexibility in source representation and selection, thus accounting for spectral variability, small-magnitude errors, and noise. A spatial-spectral coherence regularizer in the optimization allows pixel classification to be influenced by similar neighbors. We extend the proposed approach for cases for which there is no knowledge of the materials in the scene, unsupervised classification, and provide experiments and comparisons with simulated and real data. We also present results when the data have been significantly undersampled and then reconstructed, still retaining high-performance classification, showing the potential role of compressive sensing and sparse modeling techniques in efficient acquisition/transmission missions for hyperspectral imagery.
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is typically a very aggressive disease with poor outcomes, but some cases display an indolent behavior that might not necessitate treatment at diagnosis. To define ...molecular criteria that might permit recognition of such cases, we compared the clinicopathologic features, gene expression, and genomic profile of patients who had indolent or conventional disease (iMCL or cMCL). Patients with iMCL displayed nonnodal leukemic disease with predominantly hypermutated IGVH and noncomplex karyotypes. iMCL and cMCL shared a common gene expression profile that differed from other leukemic lymphoid neoplasms. However, we identified a signature of 13 genes that was highly expressed in cMCL but underexpressed in iMCL. SOX11 was notable in this signature and we confirmed a restriction of SOX11 protein expression to cMCL. To validate the potential use of SOX11 as a biomarker for cMCL, we evaluated SOX11 protein expression in an independent series of 112 cases of MCL. Fifteen patients with SOX11-negative tumors exhibited more frequent nonnodal presentation and better survival compared with 97 patients with SOX11-positive MCL (5-year overall survival of 78% versus 36%, respectively; P = 0.001). In conclusion, we defined nonnodal presentation, predominantly hypermutated IGVH, lack of genomic complexity, and absence of SOX11 expression as qualities of a specific subtype of iMCL with excellent outcomes that might be managed more conservatively than cMCL.
NOTCH1 has been found recurrently mutated in a subset of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). To analyze biological features and clinical impact of NOTCH1 mutations in CLL, we sequenced ...this gene in 565 patients. NOTCH1 mutations, found in 63 patients (11%), were associated with unmutated IGHV, high expression of CD38 and ZAP-70, trisomy 12, advanced stage and elevated lactate dehydrogenase. Sequential analysis in 200 patients demonstrated acquisition of mutation in one case (0.5%) and disappearance after treatment in two. Binet A and B patients with NOTCH1-mutated had a shorter time to treatment. NOTCH1-mutated patients were more frequently refractory to therapy and showed shorter progression-free and overall survival after complete remission. Overall survival was shorter in NOTCH1-mutated patients, although not independently from IGHV. NOTCH1 mutation increased the risk of transformation to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma independently from IGHV, with this being validated in resampling tests of replicability. In summary, NOTCH1 mutational status, that was rarely acquired during the course of the disease, identify a genetic subgroup with high risk of transformation and poor outcome. This recently identified genetic subgroup of CLL patients deserves prospective studies to define their best management.
We present an overview of a new integral field spectroscopic survey called MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory), one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan ...Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) that began on 2014 July 1. MaNGA will investigate the internal kinematic structure and composition of gas and stars in an unprecedented sample of 10,000 nearby galaxies. We summarize essential characteristics of the instrument and survey design in the context of MaNGA's key science goals and present prototype observations to demonstrate MaNGA's scientific potential. MaNGA employs dithered observations with 17 fiber-bundle integral field units that vary in diameter from 12'' (19 fibers) to 32'' (127 fibers). Two dual-channel spectrographs provide simultaneous wavelength coverage over 3600-10300 Angstrom at R ~ 2000. With a typical integration time of 3 hr, MaNGA reaches a target r-band signal-to-noise ratio of 4-8 (Angstrom super(-1) per 2'' fiber) at 23 AB mag arcsec super(-2), which is typical for the outskirts of MaNGA galaxies. Targets are selected with Mlow * > ~ 10 super(9) M sub(middot in circle) using SDSS-I redshifts and i-band luminosity to achieve uniform radial coverage in terms of the effective radius, an approximately flat distribution in stellar mass, and a sample spanning a wide range of environments. Analysis of our prototype observations demonstrates MaNGA's ability to probe gas ionization, shed light on recent star formation and quenching, enable dynamical modeling, decompose constituent components, and map the composition of stellar populations. MaNGA's spatially resolved spectra will enable an unprecedented study of the astrophysics of nearby galaxies in the coming 6 yr.
