Purpose
Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive lymphoma subtype with high 18F-FDG avidity at 18F-FDG-PET/CT, but no validated criteria for PET/CT in treatment evaluation or prediction of outcome in ...BL are available. The aim of our study was to investigate whether the metabolic baseline PET/CT parameters can predict treatment response and prognosis in BL.
Materials and methods
We retrospectively enrolled 65 patients who underwent baseline 18F-FDG-PET/CT, interim and end of treatment PET/CT. The PET images were analyzed visually and semi-quantitatively by measuring the maximum standardized uptake value body weight (SUVbw), the maximum standardized uptake value lean body mass (SUVlbm), the maximum standardized uptake value body surface area (SUVbsa), lesion to liver SUVmax ratio (L-L SUV R), lesion to blood-pool SUVmax ratio (L-BP SUV R), total metabolic tumor volume (tMTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG). Survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan–Meier method.
Results
At a median follow-up of 40 months, the median PFS and OS were 34 and 39 months. MTV and TLG were significantly higher in patients with partial response compared to complete response group at end of treatment, while no significant differences were found at interim. Other metabolic PET/CT parameters were not related to treatment response. MTV and TLG were demonstrated to be independent prognostic factors for both PFS and OS; instead SUVbw, SUVlbm, SUVbsa, L-L SUV R and L-BP SUV R were not related to outcome survival.
Conclusions
Metabolic tumour features (MTV and TLG) were significantly correlated with response to treatment and long-term outcome.
The detection rate of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in extragastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is under ...debate and the reason is not clear. Our aim was to investigate the metabolic behavior of extragastric MALT lymphoma and whether the histological features (Ki-67 index and plasmacytic differentiation, PD) might explain it. PET/CT images were analyzed visually and semi-quantitatively and compared with Ki-67 index and PD. Seventy-two patients were included. Twelve of 18 patients with PD showed intense 18F-FDG uptake; on the contrary, 42 of 54 patients without PD had positive 18F-FDG PET/CT. Twenty-six of 27 patients with Ki-67 > 15% had 18F-FDG-avid lesions; 28 of 45 patients with Ki-67 ≤ 15% had positive 18F-FDG PET/CT. 18F-FDG avidity was significantly associated with Ki-67 index (p < .001) and not correlated with PD (p = .352). Maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), lesion-to-liver SUVmax ratio and lesion-to-blood pool SUVmax ratio were not correlated with Ki-67 index or PD. 18F-FDG avidity was noted in 75% and is correlated only with Ki-67.
Objective
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive lymphoma sub-type with poor prognosis and high 18F-FDG avidity at PET/CT; nowadays, no validated criteria for PET/CT in treatment response ...evaluation and prediction of outcome are present. The aim of study was to investigate whether the metabolic PET/CT features may predict treatment evaluation and prognosis in MCL.
Methods
We retrospectively enrolled 87 patients who underwent baseline 18F-FDG PET/CT and 85 end-of-treatment (eot) PET/CT. The baseline PET images were analyzed visually and semi-quantitatively by measuring the maximum standardized uptake value body weight (SUVbw), lean body mass (SUVlbm), body surface area (SUVbsa), lesion-to-liver SUVmax ratio (L-L SUV R), lesion-to-blood pool SUVmax ratio (L-BP SUV R), metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG). EotPET/CT was visually interpreted according to the criteria of the Deauville 5-point scale (DC). Survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan–Meier method.
Results
At a median follow-up of 40 months, relapse/progression occurred in 47 and death in 23 patients. Median PFS and OS were 30 and 41 months. Baseline MTV and TLG were significantly higher in patients with progressive metabolic response compared to complete/partial response group. EotPET/CT results using DC significantly correlated with PFS, not with OS. MTV and TLG were demonstrated to be independent prognostic factors for PFS; instead the other metabolic parameters were not related to outcome survival. Considering OS, no variable was significantly associated.
Conclusions
EotPET/CT results (using DC), MTV and TLG were significantly correlated with response to treatment and PFS.
ABSTRACTRosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) or sinus histiocytosis is a rare histiocytic disorder characterized by massive lymphadenopathy and with extranodal involvement in 25% to 43% of cases. The clinical ...course of RDD is unpredictable with episodes of exacerbation and remissions that can last many years, and treatment strategies can be different according to organ involvement. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with extranodal disease followed for almost 10 years from the diagnosis who underwent seven F-FDG PET/CT. PET/CT has proven to be a useful method for the management of this patient, mainly for the staging, follow-up, and evaluation of treatment results.
The natural presence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) has been investigated in the Piedmont region (Northern Italy) in areas infested by the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica. Thirty-nine out of ...155 soil samples (25.2%) were positive for EPNs. Most of the samples contained only steinermatids (92.3%), 5.1% contained heterorhabditids, and one sample (2.6%) contained both genera. All the recovered isolates were identified at species level both morphologically and molecularly. Steinernema carpocapsae was the most abundant and it was mainly distributed in open habitats, such as perennial meadows, uncultivated soils, and cropland, characterized by sandy loam soil texture and acidic pH. Steinernema feltiae has been found associated mainly with closed habitats such as coniferous and deciduous woodland, characterized by sandy loam-texture and extremely acidic soil. The three isolates of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were collected only in open habitats (perennial meadows and uncultivated fields) characterized by strongly acidic soils with sandy loam texture. The virulence of all EPN natural strains was evaluated by laboratory assays against P. japonica third-instar larvae collected during two different periods of the year (spring, autumn). The results showed that larval mortality was higher for pre-wintering larvae than post-wintering ones. The five more promising EPN isolates were tested in the semi-field assay in which H. bacteriophora natural strains have been shown to be more efficient in controlling P. japonica grubs. All of these results are finally discussed considering the use of these natural EPNs as biological control agents against P. japonica, within an eco-friendly perspective of management.
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the CT and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) imaging findings of lung mucosa associated lymphoid tissue ...(MALT) lymphoma. Methods: 28 patients with histologically confirmed pulmonary MALT lymphoma who underwent a chest CT and 18F-FDG PET/CT for staging were retrospectively analysed. The CT images were evaluated to determine morphological pattern of appearance, laterality, localization, number, size, presence of thoracic lymphadenopaties and secondary/combined findings. PET images were analysed visually and semi-quantitatively by measuring the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), lesion-to-liver SUVmax ratio and lesion-to-blood pool SUVmax ratio. The relationship between qualitative and semi-quantitative features at 18F-FDG PET/CT and CT findings were also analysed. Results: A total of 57 pulmonary lesions were identified by CT: 37 areas of consolidation, 4 masses, 12 nodules and 4 ground-glass opacities. Solitary and multiple lesions were detected in 10 and 18 patients, respectively; among patients with multiple lesions, 16 were bilateral and 2 unilateral. 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed increased 18F-FDG uptake in 47/57 lesions, in 26/28 patients. 18F-FDG avidity was significantly associated only with tumour size. Conclusions: Pulmonary MALT lymphoma is 18F-FDG avid in most cases and 18F-FDG avidity is correlated with tumour size. Consolidation is the most frequent morphological pattern of disease presentation. Advances in knowledge: This study demonstrated that lung MALT lymphoma are 18F-FDG avid in most cases depending on tumour size. Single or multiple areas of consolidation are the most common pattern of presentation of lung MALT lymphoma at CT.
Purpose
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare hematological disorder for which the utility of
18
F-FDG PET/CT is unclear. Our aim was to explore the metabolic features of LCH and the possible ...role of
18
F-FDG PET/CT in LCH evaluation.
Materials and methods
We found 17 patients with histologically proven LCH who underwent 17
18
F-FDG PET/CT scans for staging and 42 scans for restaging/follow-up purposes. PET/CT results were compared with those obtained from other conventional imaging modalities (bone scintigraphy, plain radiogram, computed tomography, magnetic resonance).
Results
18
F-FDG PET/CT was positive in 15/17 patients, and it detected 36/37 lesions; all bone and extraskeletal lesions, except for a cecal lesion, were
18
F-FDG-avid. Only 1/4 of the patients with lung LCH had hypermetabolic lesions. The average SUV
max
of the FDG-avid lesions was 7.3 ± 6.7, the average lesion-to-liver SUV
max
ratio was 3.4 ± 2.5, and the average lesion-to-blood pool SUV
max
ratio was 4 ± 3.2. In comparison to other imaging methods,
18
F-FDG PET/CT detected additional lesions or was able to evaluate treatment response earlier in 33/74 cases; it was confirmatory in 38/74 and detected fewer lesions in 3/74 (all three with lung LCH).
Conclusions
18
F-FDG PET/CT seems to be useful for evaluating LCH when compared to conventional imaging, except in pulmonary cases. It can be used both for staging and restaging purposes.
To the Editor: We read, with interest, the article entitled "Evaluation of the Sendai and 2012 International Consensus Guidelines based on cross-sectional imaging findings performed for the initial ...triage of mucinous cystic lesions of the pancreas: a single institution experience with 114 surgically treated patients" by Goh et al, published recently in this journal. ...we deem that the diagnostic workup of IPMNs is in a fast evolving season, fraught of chances, which could be gathered through the united efforts of all the imaging professionals.
A new species of mermithid nematode,
Hexamermis popilliae
n. sp. (Nematoda: Mermithidae) is described from the Japanese beetle
Popillia japonica
Newman in Italy, an area of new introduction for this ...invasive pest. The combination of the following characters separates
H. popilliae
from other members of the genus
Hexamermis
Steiner, 1924: adult head obtuse; amphidial pouches slightly posterior to lateral head papillae in female but adjacent to lateral head papillae in males; amphidial openings large, well developed; amphidial pouches elliptical in females and oblong in males; cuticular vulvar cone well developed, vulvar lips greatly reduced or lacking, vagina curved at tip where meeting uteri, without reverse bend (not S-shaped), spicules slightly curved, with a slight bend in the basal portion, approximately equal to body width at cloaca. This is the first record of a species of
Hexamermis
parasitizing the Japanese beetle
Popillia japonica
. The only previous mention of mermithid nematodes from
P. japonica
was an undescribed species of
Psammomermis
in North America.
Hexamermis popilliae
will be evaluated as a potential biological control agent in an integrated control program of the Japanese beetle in Italy.
