The distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in sediments of the mid Cretaceous from the western Anglo-Paris Basin are examined. Samples were collated from a range of facies types (i.e. basin ...margin-central basin), but particular emphasis was placed on those which represented deposition around the basin margins.
We present an optical to X-ray spectral analysis of four 'hypervariable' AGN (HVAs) discovered by comparing Pan-STARRS data to that from SDSS over a 10 year baseline (Lawrence et al 2016). There is ...some evidence that these objects are X-ray loud for their corresponding UV luminosities, but given that we measured them in a historic high state, it is not clear whether to take the high-state or low-state as typical of the properties of these HVAs. We estimate black hole masses based on MgII and H\(\alpha\) emission line profiles, and either the high and low state luminosities, finding mass ranges \(\log(M_{\rm BH}/M_{\odot}) = 8.2-8.8\) and \(\log(M_{\rm BH}/M_{\odot}) = 7.9-8.3\) respectively. We then fit energy conserving models to the SEDs, obtaining strong constraints on the bolometric luminosity and \(\alpha_{\rm OX}\). We compare the SED properties with a larger, X-ray selected AGN sample for both of these scenarios, and observe distinct groupings in spectral shape versus luminosity parameter space. In general, the SED properties are closer to normal if we assume that the low-state is representative. This supports the idea that the large slow outbursts may be due to extrinsic effects (for example microlensing) as opposed to accretion rate changes, but a larger sample of HVAs is needed to be confident of this conclusion.
Canonical systems in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) with absolutely continuous real symmetric \(\pi\)-periodic potentials matrices are considered. A through analysis of the discriminant is given along with the ...indexing and interlacing of the eigenvalues of the periodic, anti-periodic and Dirichlet-type boundary value problems on \(0,\pi\). The periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues are characterized in terms of Dirichlet type eigenvalues. It is shown that all instability intervals vanish if and only if the potential is the product of an absolutely continuous real valued function with the identity matrix.
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) that show strong rest-frame optical/UV variability in their blue continuum and broad line emission are classified as "changing-look" AGN, or at higher luminosities ...changing look quasars (CLQs). These surprisingly large and sometimes rapid transitions challenge accepted models of quasar physics and duty cycles, offer several new avenues for study of quasar host galaxies, and open a wider interpretation of the cause of differences between broad and narrow line AGN. To better characterize extreme quasar variability, we present follow-up spectroscopy as part of a comprehensive search for CLQs across the full SDSS footprint using spectroscopically confirmed quasars from the SDSS DR7 catalog. Our primary selection requires large-amplitude (|\Delta g|>1 mag, |\Delta r|>0.5 mag) variability over any of the available time baselines probed by the SDSS and Pan-STARRS 1 surveys. We employ photometry from the Catalina Sky Survey to verify variability behavior in CLQ candidates where available, and confirm CLQs using optical spectroscopy from the William Herschel, MMT, Magellan, and Palomar telescopes. For our adopted S/N threshold on variability of broad H\beta emission, we find 17 new CLQs, yielding a confirmation rate of >~ 20%. These candidates are at lower Eddington ratio relative to the overall quasar population which supports a disk-wind model for the broad line region. Based on our sample, the CLQ fraction increases from 10% to roughly half as the continuum flux ratio between repeat spectra at 3420 Angstroms increases from 1.5 to 6. We release a catalog of over 200 highly variable candidates to facilitate future CLQ searches.

(ProQuest: ... denotes non-US-ASCII text omitted.) The most comprehensive edition of Kierkegaard's journals and papers available in English is the multivolume edition translated by Howard and Edna ...Hong between 1967 and 1978 (JP), but even this edition is only a selection. Of what use would it be to me to discover a so-called objective truth, to work through the philosophical systems so that I could, if asked, make critical judgments about them, could point out fallacies in each system; of what use would it be to me to be able to develop a theory of the state, getting details from various sources and combining them into a whole, and constructing a world I did not live in but merely held up for others to see. There are a variety of translation methods that, once adopted, provide principles that help determine for the translator how to deal with a particular word or phrase.2 If there is a guiding principle, however, behind the decisions of the translators of KJN of when to translate literally and when freely, it does not appear to be either readability or accuracy.
We present the results of differential, time series photometry for GSC 02038-00293, a suspected RS CVn binary, using data collected with the Open University's PIRATE robotic telescope located at the ...Observatori Astronomic de Mallorca between 10 May and 13 June 2010. A full orbital period cycle in the V band and partial cycle of B and R bands were obtained for GSC 02038-00293 showing an orbital period of 0.4955 +/- 0.0001 days. This period is in close agreement with that of previously published values but significantly different to that found by the All Sky Automated Survey of 0.330973 days. We suggest GSC 02038-00293 is a short period eclipsing RS CVn star and from our data alone we calculate an ephemeris of JD 2455327.614 + 0.4955(1) x E. We also find that the previously observed six to eight year cycle of star spot activity which accounts for the behaviour of the secondary minimum is closer to six years and that there is detectable reddening at both minima.
For eighteen years, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith have been part of a team revolutionizing the study of politics by turning conventional wisdom on its head. They start from a single ...assertion: Leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don't care about the national interest"or even their subjectsunless they have to. This clever and accessible book shows that the difference between tyrants and democrats is just a convenient fiction. Governments do not differ in kind but only in the number of essential supporters, or backs that need scratching. The size of this group determines almost everything about politics: what leaders can get away with, and the quality of life or misery under them. The picture the authors paint is not pretty. But it just may be the truth, which is a good starting point for anyone seeking to improve human governance.
We use natural seeing imaging of SN 2013ej in M74 to identify a progenitor candidate in archival {\it Hubble Space Telescope} + ACS images. We find a source coincident with the SN in the {\it ...F814W}-filter, however the position of the progenitor candidate in contemporaneous {\it F435W} and {\it F555W}-filters is significantly offset. We conclude that the "progenitor candidate" is in fact two physically unrelated sources; a blue source which is likely unrelated to the SN, and a red source which we suggest exploded as SN 2013ej. Deep images with the same instrument onboard {\it HST} taken when the supernova has faded (in approximately two years time) will allow us to accurately characterise the unrelated neighbouring source and hence determine the intrinsic flux of the progenitor in three filters. We suggest that the {\it F814W} flux is dominated by the progenitor of SN 2013ej, and assuming a bolometric correction appropriate to an M-type supergiant, we estimate that the mass of the progenitor of SN 2013ej was between 8 -- 15.5 M\(_{\odot}\).
Sir, As a trustee of the National Botanic Garden of Wales, I was very disappointed to read in Jonathan Guthrie's piece on the Wales Millennium Centre ("Stage for Welsh culture makes its entrance at ...last", November 26) that "Wales was the scene of the financial collapse of the National Botanical Gardens, a horticultural folly". This statement is wholly incorrect.
The motivation for this thesis is rooted in the problems arising from the lack of a single theoretical framework within which to assimilate different analytical methods; whether they are applied to ...an individual work, compositions embracing an underlying common practice or to the study of stylistically remote pieces. By devising a series of logical axioms and definitions, collectively referred to as a metatheory and situating them - as an expression of the neutral level originally proposed by Jean Molino - in the context of the semiological tripartition, it is found that the metatheory can be used to construct aspects of existing music theories. The precise extent to which a specific theory of music can be derived from the metatheory is not considered, but the many examples used to illustrate the application of metatheoretical logic to music analysis clearly demonstrate that meaning can only be ascribed to the structural configurations so determined if the poietic and esthesic dimensions of the tripartition are invoked as a means of distinguishing the actual from the logically possible. It is in this sense that logic is found to be limited. Two important consequences follow from this conceptual framework. Firstly, the involvement of the poietic and esthesic dimensions in the final analysis potentially enables many diverse theories to be derived from the metatheory, thereby preserving the important differences that exist between analytical methods. Secondly, the whole notion of a text-centred theory of music is challenged since the importance of the poietic and esthesic dimensions to the provision of meaning is such that these dimensions can theoretically overwhelm the configurations established within the text by the application of logic.
