This article presents the results of a literature review related to volunteerism in urban forestry in the United States. Themes explored were inductively emergent from the research reviewed and ...included 'volunteer demographics', 'motivations of volunteers', 'benefits of volunteering', 'volunteer engagement and barriers', 'value of volunteering', and 'volunteer recruitment and retention'. Urban forestry volunteers are often motivated by personal, social, and environmental considerations. Volunteers in urban forestry may not be representative of a cross-section of the communities that they are serving, rather they are often middle-aged, well-educated white women. Further research is required both to ascertain barriers to volunteerism and to enhance future volunteer recruitment and retainment efforts. Volunteers in the United States account for 5% of municipal tree care in urban forests - accounting for an estimated $35 million USD in value. Volunteers perform critical urban forestry-related tasks that aim to increase urban tree canopy cover through tree selection and planting efforts. Volunteers encourage urban tree survival by advocating for, as well as performing, important maintenance-related duties including the administration of supplemental watering and urban tree pruning. With proper training and support, volunteers may accurately perform important data collection efforts that may inform management decisions and urban tree care maintenance programmes.
Compared with that of other charismatic elasmobranchs, the component community of metazoan parasites infecting endangered smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata is exceedingly poorly characterized: ...adults of Dermophthirioides pristidis and Neoheterocotyle inpristi (ectoparasitic flatworms of skin and gill, respectively) were the only confirmed parasites prior to the description, based on specimens reported herein, of Mycteronastes caalusi. Our opportune and directed parasitological examinations of 290 smalltooth sawfish (277 live inspections; 13 necropsies; 671 to 2640 mm stretch total length) in south Florida coastal waters revealed at least 8 species of Platyhelminthes, 9 of Arthropoda, 4 of Annelida, and 1 of Nematoda. This collection includes representatives of an undescribed species of Aporocotylidae (Digenea) and myriad new host records, considerably updating and advancing our understanding of smalltooth sawfish symbionts. We also confirm that D. pristidis and N. inpristi are extant and propose D. pristidis as a reliable biological tag. Some of these parasites are evidently highly host-specific and so vulnerable to extinction.
This study was conducted to describe the prevalence, epidemiology, and clinical outcomes of multidrug-resistant (MDR) organism (MDRO) pneumonia in critically ill patients.
A multicenter, prospective, ...observational study of patients admitted to 60 intensive care units (ICUs), from 34 hospitals, in the United States from November to December 2016. Adults (> 18 yrs) receiving antimicrobial therapy at least 5 days for pneumonia were included. Patients were classified into two categories, with or without MDRO, and subcategorized by pneumonia type.
Demographics, medication histories, and health care exposure were collected during ICU admission and compared using t test and chi-square tests. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine predictive factors for MDRO pneumonia and hospital mortality. Of 652 patients, 92 patients (14.1%) developed MDR pneumonia. Predictors of MDRO pneumonia were acid suppression therapy within the previous 90 days (odds ratio OR 1.88 1.14-3.09; p=0.013), mechanical ventilation (OR 1.96 1.14-3.35; p<0.001), and history of MDRO infection (OR 4.74 2.21-10.18; p<0.001). Appropriate initial antimicrobial selection occurred in 58 patients (63%) with MDRO pneumonia compared to 464 patients (82.7%) in patients without MDRO pneumonia (p<0.001). MDRO pneumonia was not associated with hospital mortality (18.5% vs 17.6%, p=0.087).
In a broad cohort of critically ill patients, MDRO pneumonia is infrequent, and associated with factors describing the intensity of health care provided. Presence of MDRO pneumonia is not associated with hospital mortality. Further study is needed to clarify risk factors for multidrug-resistant pneumonia in critically ill patients.
