Ecological subsidies have been hypothesized to be key factors affecting the dynamics of the recipient ecosystems. We assessed the impact of the flood regime on the assimilation of a trophic subsidy ...produced in the floodplain of a large fluvial lake, Lake Saint-Pierre (Quebec, Canada) on five invertivore littoral fish species (yellow perch (Perca flavescens), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), bridle shiner (Notropis bifrenatus), golden shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas), and banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus)). We hypothesized that the incorporation of floodplain-derived carbon into fish biomass and individual fitness would increase in years with higher magnitude and longer duration floods. Studying four consecutive years with contrasting spring-flood events, we used a stable isotope mixing model to estimate floodplain contribution, and linear mixed models to analyze the impact of hydrology on floodplain contribution and fish body condition. Floodplain and main river’s invertebrates exhibited statistically distinct isotopic ratios (t test: p value < 0.001). Floodplain contribution and body condition were positively correlated with flooding intensity and duration for all species. Body condition was positively correlated with the assimilation of floodplain-subsidy for golden shiner and banded killifish. Our study identified flooding intensity as a main driver influencing the assimilation of floodplain-derived carbon by littoral fish and their fitness in a large river ecosystem.
This study examines the temporal and spatial variability of the floodplain trophic contribution to the fish community of Lake Saint-Pierre, a large (≈ 300 km²), shallow (≈ 3 m) widening of the St. ...Lawrence River (Québec, Canada). We hypothesized that floodplain contribution to fish diet would be maximal during the early growing period following the seasonal flood and at sites located closest to the floodplain. Carbon stable isotope ratios (δ¹³C) of invertebrates and 35 fish species were analyzed at the beginning and at the end of two growing seasons, at increasing distances from the floodplain. Floodplain contribution, in the form of exported aquatic invertebrates, was estimated at the fish community (littoral versus main river), species and individual fish level, using a stable isotopic mixing model and a linear mixed model selection. As hypothesized, fish captured in the early part of the growing season near the floodplain benefitted from the largest floodplain contribution, which decreased during the late growing season. In addition, floodplain contribution differed among fish species, being higher in small or immature littoral species (northern pike, yellow perch, blackchin and golden shiners) than for larger taxa inhabiting the main river channel (shorthead redhorse, white sucker and channel catfish). Our study revealed that floodplain production during the early growing season represents a key food resource to a large portion of the riverine food web, thus highlighting the essential role of the floodplain in human-altered temperate rivers.

This pilot study suggested that VitD and Se supplementation, in GD patients receiving MMI treatment, modulates Treg and NK cell frequency, favoring a more pronounced reduction of NK cells and the increase of Treg cells, compared to MMI alone. Even if further studies are needed, it is possible to speculate that this immunomodulatory action might have facilitated the prompter and better control of hyperthyroidism in the supplemented group observed in the previous study.
We compared the biomass, taxonomic composition, and size distribution of invertebrates associated to emergent (Schoenoplectus lacustris), submerged (Myriophyllum spicatum), and floating leaved (Trapa ...natans) vegetation at two depths (surface and water column) during summer in Lago di Candia, Italy. Invertebrate biomass was positively related to epiphyton biomass (Chl-a). M. spicatum supported higher invertebrate biomass per unit of plant weight than S. lacustris whereas T. natans was somewhat intermediate. Depth did not affect invertebrate biomass significatively. Surface sections of M. spicatum and T. natans supported invertebrate communities with similar taxonomic composition dominated by oligochaetes and ostracods. Large hirudineans and gastropods characterized the communities on the water column sections of M. spicatum. S. lacustris and the water column sections of T. natans (composed of stems and aquatic roots) were supporting invertebrate communities dominated by copepod nauplii and lacking large organisms. Changes in aquatic vegetation in Lago di Candia following harvesting of T. natans and removal of submerged vegetation by the invasion of the rodent coypu (Miocastor coypus) may affect the invertebrate biomass of its littoral zone.
Previously pristine lakes of the Laurentian region of Quebec, Canada, have faced increasing residential development of their watershed since the 1970s. We tested whether littoral invertebrates ...respond to this perturbation, even though open-water nutrients and chlorophyll are not yet altered. We examined changes in biomass, size structure, and taxonomic composition of macroinvertebrates living on rocks and sediments in 13 lakes representing a gradient of lakeshore residential development and watershed clearing. Littoral invertebrates provided early indication of lake perturbation, but their response varied according to the substratum. On rocks, total invertebrate biomass increased along the perturbation gradient and size structure shifted towards large organisms. These changes were likely mediated by a concomitant increase in epilithon biomass, suggesting a bottom-up control. No significant change in total biomass and size structure was observed for invertebrates in sediments. In contrast, taxonomic composition changed with lake development in sediments, but not on rocks. Taxonomic shifts were likely related to changes in sediment heterogeneity due to a decline of woody litter and increased fine particle deposition. Oligochaetes were positively associated to perturbation, whereas mayflies were negatively associated;; these taxa could be used as indicators. Sediments were a better sentinel substratum than rocks for biomonitoring the impact of lake residential development.
Changes in the taxonomic composition, chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight, percentage organic carbon and nitrogen and several indices of diversity, including "Margalef's index" were followed ...during the development of phytobenthonic communities on glass slides. These data suggest that, in this environment, the algal community resembles the nearby natural community after 4 weeks. The taxonomic development can be divided into two phases. During the first 2 weeks the phytocoenosis is dominated by a rather diverse and variable diatom assemblage. Later Cyanophyta dominate. The diversity decreases during colonization as reflected by all indices considered.

In this paper, we present the results of toxicological analyses of preserved brain tissue and bone samples from the remains of the seventeenth century patients of the Ospedale Maggiore, the main ...hospital in Milan and one of the most innovative hospitals in Europe from the Renaissance period. Beneath it, the crypt functioned as the burial place for the deceased of the hospital. In this multidisciplinary study of the remains, toxicological analyses in particular were performed with HPLC-MS/MS on different biological samples from nine individuals. Anthropological, paleopathological, histological, radiological examinations and radiocarbon dating were also carried out. As a result, archeotoxicological analyses revealed the presence of codeine, morphine, noscapine and papaverine, derived from Papaver somniferum, a plant present in the hospital pharmacopeia used as a narcotic, analgesic, astringent, coagulant, and antitussive agent. Such analyses have shed light on the pharmacological therapies administered to the patients near the time of death and have implemented our knowledge of medical treatment and drug administration in the 1600's.
Flow diversion aims at treatment of intracranial aneurysms via vessel remodeling mechanisms, avoiding the implantation of foreign materials into the aneurysm sack. However, complex implantation ...procedure, high metal surface and hemodynamic disturbance still pose a risk for thromboembolic complications in the clinical praxis. A novel fibrin and heparin based nano coating considered as a hemocompatible scaffold for neointimal formation was investigated regarding thrombogenicity and endothelialization. The fibrin-heparin coating was compared to a bare metal as well as fibrin- or heparin-coated flow diverters. The implants were tested separately in regard to inflammation and coagulation markers in two different in vitro hemocompatibility models conducted with human whole blood (n = 5). Endothelialization was investigated through a novel dynamic in vitro cell seeding model containing primary human cells with subsequent viability assay. It was demonstrated that platelet loss and platelet activation triggered by presence of a bare metal stent could be significantly reduced by applying the fibrin-heparin, fibrin and heparin coating. Viability of endothelial cells after proliferation was similar in fibrin-heparin compared to bare metal implants, with a slight, non-significant improvement observed in the fibrin-heparin group. The results suggest that the presented nanocoating has the potential to reduce thromboembolic complications in a clinical setting. Though the new model allowed for endothelial cell proliferation under flow conditions, a higher number of samples is required to assess a possible effect of the coating.
Studies on air quality in rural environments are fundamental to obtain first-hand data for the determination of base emissions of air pollutants, to assess the impact of rural-specific airborne ...pollutants, to model pollutant dispersion, and to develop proper pollution mitigation technologies. The literature lacks a systematic review based on the evaluation of the techniques and methods used for the sampling/monitoring (S/M) of atmospheric pollutants in rural and agricultural settings, which highlights the shortcomings in this field and the need for future studies. This work aims to review the study design applied for on-field monitoring campaigns of airborne pollutants in rural environments and discuss the possible needs and future developments in this field. The results of this literature review, based on the revision of 23 scientific papers, allowed us to determine (i) the basic characteristics related to the study design that should always be reported; (ii) the main techniques and analyses used in exposure assessment studies conducted in this type of setting; and (iii) contextual parameters and descriptors of the S/M site that should be considered to best support the results obtained from the different studies. Future studies carried out to monitor the airborne pollution in rural/agriculture areas should (i) include the use of multiparametric monitors for the contextual measurement of different atmospheric pollutants (as well as meteorological parameters) and (ii) consider the most important boundary information, to better characterize the S/M site.
