This paper reports the experimental results of a test campaign performed on the radio-frequency (RF) receiver prototype operating at a 2025-2110 MHz frequency range, designed and fabricated for ...CubeSat applications. The prototype has been tested through a board-level test approach for the verification of the functional requirements and a component-level one for specific characterization measures. The tests have shown the following results: a -115--70 dBm sensitivity range, 390 MHz intermediate frequency, a 0 dBm output power level with ±1 dB error, a 2.34 dB noise figure, and a 4.86 W power absorption. Such results have been largely achieved implementing an automatic gain control system by cascading two Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) amplifiers. Moreover, an innovative technique based on RF test points has been successfully experimented and validated to measure the S-parameters of a custom low-pass filter integrated on the receiver, showing the possibility of even characterizing the single COTS components exposed to radiation through a unique board-level test setup. The technique may have a great impact on the cost reduction of electronic boards for space applications, since it would avoid using expensive evaluation boards for each COTS component that needs a radiation test.

Latching Current Limiters are fundamental devices in satellite space power systems required to be Single Point Failure Free. They are used to protect and distribute power as described and required by ...the ECSS-E-ST-20-20C standard 1. A crucial aspect of these devices is the current control loop aiming at limiting the current in case of overload or short circuit. On one hand the fastest possible response is required to LCLs when a load fault condition occurs; on the other hand a minimum stability criterion needs to be respected. This paper presents a comparison between three different topologies of control loop: the first one based on a resistive feedback with only a proportional action, the second featuring a topology based on an inductive feedback, with proportional and derivative action, and the third based on an Op Amp, with derivative and integral action. The comparison, mainly based on the ECSS standard, investigates both theoretical and experimental results. These latter derive from tests conducted on prototypes and/or boards intended to find application in space missions. The solution relying on resistive feedback offers a very simple and cost effective solution, while the architecture based on inductive feedback uses an inductor in series with the shunt resistor which results in a reduction of the Current Overshoot as practical experiments demonstrate. Finally, the Op Amp based topology offers a better control of the current limitation value over the other two solutions.
Metis is the first solar coronagraph designed for a space mission capable of performing simultaneous imaging of the off-limb solar corona in both visible and UV light. The observations obtained with ...Metis aboard the Solar Orbiter ESA-NASA observatory will enable us to diagnose, with unprecedented temporal coverage and spatial resolution, the structures and dynamics of the full corona from 1.7 \(R_\odot\) to about 9 \(R_\odot\). Due to the uniqueness of the Solar Orbiter mission profile, Metis will be able to observe the solar corona from a close vantage point (down to 0.28 AU), achieving out-of-ecliptic views with the increase of the orbit inclination over time. Moreover, observations near perihelion, during the phase of lower rotational velocity of the solar surface relative to the spacecraft, will allow longer-term studies of the coronal features. Thanks to a novel occultation design and a combination of a UV interference coating of the mirrors and a spectral bandpass filter, Metis images the solar corona simultaneously in the visible light band, between 580 and 640 nm, and in the UV H I Lyman-{\alpha} line at 121.6 nm. The coronal images in both the UV Lyman-{\alpha} and polarised visible light are obtained at high spatial resolution with a spatial scale down to about 2000 km and 15000 km at perihelion, in the cases of the visible and UV light, respectively. A temporal resolution down to 1 second can be achieved when observing coronal fluctuations in visible light. The Metis measurements will allow for complete characterisation of the main physical parameters and dynamics of the electron and neutral hydrogen/proton plasma components of the corona in the region where the solar wind undergoes acceleration and where the onset and initial propagation of coronal mass ejections take place, thus significantly improving our understanding of the region connecting the Sun to the heliosphere.
The N-palmitoylethanolamine (PEA) is an endogenous member of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) with several biological functions, including a neuromodulatory activity in the central nervous system. To ...shed light on the neuronal function of PEA, we investigated its involvement in the control of both excitatory and inhibitory transmission in the murine striatum, a brain region strongly modulated by the ECS. By means of electrophysiological recordings, we showed that PEA modulates inhibitory synaptic transmission, through activation of GPR55 receptors, promoting a transient increase of GABAergic spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic current (sIPSC) frequency. The subsequently rundown effect on sIPSC frequency was secondary to the delayed stimulation of presynaptic cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1Rs) by the endocannabinoid 2-AG, whose synthesis was stimulated by PEA on postsynaptic neurons. Our results indicate that PEA, acting on GPR55, enhances GABA transmission in the striatum, and triggers a parallel synthesis of 2-AG at the postsynaptic site, that in turn acts in a retrograde manner to inhibit GABA release through the stimulation of presynaptic CB1Rs. This electrophysiological study identifies a previously unrecognized function of PEA and of GPR55, demonstrating that GABAergic transmission is under the control of this compound and revealing that PEA modulates the release of the endocannabinoid 2-AG.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has long been regarded as a chronic inflammatory disease of the white matter that leads to demyelination and eventually to neurodegeneration. In the past decade, several ...aspects of MS pathogenesis have been challenged, and degenerative changes of the grey matter, which are independent of demyelination, have become a topic of interest. CNS inflammation in MS and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE; a disease model used to study MS in rodents) causes a marked imbalance between GABAergic and glutamatergic transmission, and a loss of synapses, all of which leads to a diffuse 'synaptopathy'. Altered synaptic transmission can occur early in MS and EAE, independently of demyelination and axonal loss, and subsequently causes excitotoxic damage. Inflammation-driven synaptic abnormalities are emerging as a prominent pathogenic mechanism in MS-importantly, they are potentially reversible and, therefore, represent attractive therapeutic targets. In this Review, we focus on the connection between inflammation and synaptopathy in MS and EAE, which sheds light not only on the pathophysiology of MS but also on that of primary neurodegenerative disorders in which inflammatory processes contribute to disease progression.
Cytokines are constitutively released in the healthy brain by resident myeloid cells to keep proper synaptic plasticity, either in the form of Hebbian synaptic plasticity or of homeostatic ...plasticity. However, when cytokines dramatically increase, establishing a status of neuroinflammation, the synaptic action of such molecules remarkably interferes with brain circuits of learning and cognition and contributes to excitotoxicity and neurodegeneration. Among others, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) are the best studied proinflammatory cytokines in both physiological and pathological conditions and have been invariably associated with long-term potentiation (LTP) (Hebbian synaptic plasticity) and synaptic scaling (homeostatic plasticity), respectively. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the prototypical neuroinflammatory disease, in which inflammation triggers excitotoxic mechanisms contributing to neurodegeneration. IL-β and TNF are increased in the brain of MS patients and contribute to induce the changes in synaptic plasticity occurring in MS patients and its animal model, the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This review will introduce and discuss current evidence of the role of IL-1β and TNF in the regulation of synaptic strength at both physiological and pathological levels, in particular speculating on their involvement in the synaptic plasticity changes observed in the EAE brain.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent a new reality for many physiological and pathological functions as an alternative mode of intercellular communication. This is due to their capacity to interact ...with distant recipient cells, usually involving delivery of the EVs contents into the target cells. Intensive investigation has targeted the role of EVs in different pathological conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the nervous system, one of the main causes of neurological disability in young adults. The fine interplay between the immune and nervous systems is profoundly altered in this disease, and EVs seems to have a relevant impact on MS pathogenesis. Here, we provide an overview of both clinical and preclinical studies showing that EVs released from blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelial cells, platelets, leukocytes, myeloid cells, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes are involved in the pathogenesis of MS and of its rodent model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Most of the information points to an impact of EVs on BBB damage, on spreading pro-inflammatory signals, and altering neuronal functions, but EVs reparative function of brain damage deserves attention. Finally, we will describe recent advances about EVs as potential therapeutic targets and tools for therapeutic intervention in MS.
Growing data from human and animal studies indicate the beneficial effects of exercise on several clinical outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune, demyelinating disease, ...suggesting that it may slow down the disease progression, by reducing brain damage. However, the mechanisms involved are still elusive.
Aim of this study was to address the effects of voluntary running wheel in a toxic-demyelinating model of MS, in which demyelination and brain inflammation occur in response to cuprizone (CPZ) treatment. Mice were housed in standard or wheel-equipped cages starting from the day of CPZ or normal chow feeding for three or six weeks and evaluated for weight changes, locomotor skills and neuromuscular functions over the course of the experimental design. Biochemical, molecular biology and immunohistochemical analyses were performed.
Exercise prevented early weight loss caused by CPZ, indicating improved wellness in these mice. Both neuromuscular function and motor coordination were significantly enhanced by exercise in CPZ-treated mice. Moreover, exercise induced an early protection against axonal damage and the loss of the myelin associated proteins, myelin basic protein (MBP) and 2′,3′-Cyclic-nucleotide 3′-phosphodiesterase (CNPase), in the striatum and the corpus callosum, in coincidence of a strongly attenuated microglia activation in both brain areas. Further, during the late phase of the treatment, exercise in CPZ mice reduced the recruitment of new OLs compared to sedentary CPZ mice, likely due to the precocious protection against myelin damage.
Overall, these results suggest that life-style interventions can be effective against the demyelinating-inflammatory processes occurring in the brains of MS patients.

Aging is one of the main risk factors for the development of many neurodegenerative diseases. Emerging evidence has acknowledged neuroinflammation as potential trigger of the functional changes ...occurring during normal and pathological aging. Two main determinants have been recognized to cogently contribute to neuroinflammation in the aging brain, i.e., the systemic chronic low-grade inflammation and the decline in the regulation of adaptive and innate immune systems (immunosenescence, ISC). The persistence of the inflammatory status in the brain in turn may cause synaptopathy and synaptic plasticity impairments that underlie both motor and cognitive dysfunctions. Interestingly, such inflammation-dependent synaptic dysfunctions have been recently involved in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is an autoimmune neurodegenerative disease, typically affecting young adults that cause an early and progressive deterioration of both cognitive and motor functions. Of note, recent controlled studies have clearly shown that age at onset modifies prognosis and exerts a significant effect on presenting phenotype, suggesting that aging is a significant factor associated to the clinical course of MS. Moreover, some lines of evidence point to the different impact of age on motor disability and cognitive deficits, being the former most affected than the latter. The precise contribution of aging-related factors to MS neurological disability and the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms are still unclear. In the present review article, we first emphasize the importance of the neuroinflammatory dependent mechanisms, such as synaptopathy and synaptic plasticity impairments, suggesting their potential exacerbation or acceleration with advancing age in the MS disease. Lastly, we provide an overview of clinical and experimental studies highlighting the different impact of age on motor disability and cognitive decline in MS, raising challenging questions on the putative age-related mechanisms involved.
