A LIDAR network is being built for the measurement and online monitoring of the atmospheric optical parameters, which play a central role in the energy measurement of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. ...Four LIDAR systems, each one equipped by an Nd:YAG UV laser and three parabolic mirrors with PMTs for the detection of the backscatter photons, are scheduled to be installed in the proximity of the four fluorescence detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory (Malargüe, Argentina). In this paper a report describing hardware components, commissioning and shooting strategies of the LIDAR systems is given.
We report on the decay to two photons of the χc0(13P0) charmonium resonance formed in p̄p interactions at Fermilab experiment E835. We have measured the product of branching ratios ...BR(χc0→p̄p)×BR(χc0→γγ)=(6.52±1.18(stat)+0.48−0.72(sys))×10−8. Using values from the 2002 PDG, this measurement leads to the partial width Γ(χc0→γγ)=2.9±0.9 keV.

We present the characteristics and performance of the optical system for the fluorescence detector prototype of the Pierre Auger Project. The system adopts a Schmidt camera design with a mirror ...collecting, on a spherical surface, the light incoming through a limited aperture diaphragm. An absorption filter is installed in the diaphragm to preferentially trasmit the nitrogen fluorescence light.

. The energy calibration of the detector is based on ...a system of four air fluorescence detectors. To obtain reliable calorimetric information from the fluorescence stations, the atmospheric conditions at the experiment's site need to be monitored continuously during operation. One of the components of the observatory's atmospheric monitoring system is a set of four elastic backscatter lidar stations, one station at each of the fluorescence detector sites. This paper describes the design, current status, standard operation procedure, and performance of the lidar system of the Pierre Auger Observatory.
The Pierre Auger Observatory will study cosmic rays with energy exceeding 10/sup 19/ eV. The experiment will measure properties of extensive air showers with a hybrid detector consisting of a surface ...array and an atmospheric fluorescence telescope. This paper presents the characteristics and performance of the optical system for the fluorescence detector prototype. The system adopts a Schmidt camera design with a diaphragm to remove coma aberration. A large spherical mirror (approximately 3.6/spl times/3.6 m, with radius of curvature 3.47 m), segmented in 49 trapezoidal elements, is supported by a mechanical structure, where segments are positioned on the meridians of the spherical cap. At the diaphragm, an absorption filter is installed to preferentially transmit the nitrogen fluorescence light. The construction technique, image characteristics, and results of tests performed on the system are discussed.
A threshold gas Cherenkov counter is used in Fermilab experiment 835 to tag electrons from the decay of charmonium states. It is an improved version of the counter used in a previous charmonium ...experiment, E760. The new features of the design, the technique used to build a set of ellipsoidal mirrors, and the counter performance are presented.
The Fluorescence Detector of the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory will provide a measurement of the parameters of extensive air showers with energy >10/sup 19/ eV. The mirror of the Fluorescence ...Detector prototype has dimension /spl sim/3.6/spl times/3.6 m/sup 2/, and is composed of 49 trapezoidal segments of approximately 50/spl times/50 cm/sup 2/. Each segment is curved using a steel mold in which the glass sags in a controlled environment. The glass is then aluminized under vacuum and coated with oxide (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/). The oxide thickness is chosen to maximize the reflectivity in the wavelength range of fluorescence light (300 nm</spl lambda/<400 nm). The 49 mirror segments, plus eight spare ones, are now ready for installation. The authors discuss the production technique of the segments for the Torino prototype mirror.
