Myroides spp. are Gram-negative bacilli that are commonly found in soil and water, acting as low-level opportunistic pathogens and causing a variety of infections.
To assess the risk factors for ...multi-drug-resistant myroides infections, association with comorbid illnesses, patient care and susceptibility to antibiotics.
This retrospective analytical study was conducted in Istanbul Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, and included patients with Myroides spp. isolated in their culture samples. Total hospitalization days, first isolation day and 30-day mortality values of the patients were analysed statistically, and P<0.05 was considered to indicate significance.
Myroides spp. were isolated from 437 culture samples from 228 patients. Of these cases, 210 (92.1%) were classified as having asymptomatic bacteriuria, and 18 (7.9%) as having an infection caused by Myroides spp. One hundred and seventy-four (76.3%) patients were followed up in the intensive care unit, and total hospitalization days (median 24.5 days) and first isolation day (median 9.5 days) of infected patients were shorter than those for colonized patients (P=0.023 and 0.030, respectively). No difference was found in 30-day mortality between infected and colonized patients (P=0.312).
Myroides infections were seen more frequently in patients who were hospitalized for a long time, used broad-spectrum antimicrobials, underwent invasive procedures, and had co-factors such as diabetes and cerebrovascular disease. In addition, the resistance rates of Myroides odoratus were higher than those of Myroides odoratimimus, and the use of quinolones for the treatment of patients with M. odoratimimus infection led to a higher cure rate.

This paper analyzes climate variability and change in the Urmia Lake Basin, northwest of Iran. Annual average of the following data time series has been analyzed by statistical methods: dry bulb ...temperature, maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, and number of rainy and snowy days. We have also used mean monthly temperature and precipitation data for analysis of drought spells for the period 1964–2005 to find out whether fluctuations in the lake level are attributable to natural drought. Our results indicate that mean precipitation has decreased by 9.2 % and the average maximum temperature has increased by 0.8°C over these four decades. The seasonal changes are particularly visible in winter and spring. Results of the Palmer Drought Severity Index show that on average, drought episodes have hit the Urmia Lake Basin every 5 years and most of them reached severe levels, but recent droughts have become more intense and last longer.

Background:
Delayed puberty (DP) affects approximately 2% of adolescents. In most patients of both genders, delayed puberty is due to constitutional delay in growth and puberty (CDGP); it ...is a self-limiting condition starting later than usual during puberty but progressing normally. Other causes of DP include permanent hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and gonadal insufficiency.
Methods:
Nine patients admitted to the Ankara Atatürk Sanatoryum Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology Department with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism between January 2012 and December 2022 were analyzed.
Results:
Nine patients who applied to our pediatric endocrinology clinic with delayed puberty were analyzed. These nine patients were diagnosed and reported as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with molecular methods. We aimed to determine the status of these cases from a molecular point of view, to emphasize the importance of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in patients with delayed puberty, and to reveal the rarely encountered delayed puberty together with the clinical and laboratory data set of the patients.
Conclusions:
To emphasize the importance of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, which is a rare cause of delayed puberty, the molecular predispositions of our patients followed in our clinic are reviewed, and the data we have provided will contribute to the accumulation of data in this area.
Obesity is an independent risk factor for heart diseases but the underlying mechanism is not clear. This study examined cardiac contraction, oxidative stress, oxidative modification of ...sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) and the myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform switch in obese mice.
Mechanical properties were evaluated in ventricular myocytes from C57BL/6J lean and Lep/Lep obese mice (formerly known as ob/ob mice), including peak shortening (PS), time to 50 or 90% PS, time to 50 or 90% relengthening (TR50, TR90), maximal velocity of shortening/relengthening (+/-dL/dt), intracellular Ca2+ and its decay (tau). Oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, protein damage and SERCA activity were assessed by glutathione/glutathione disulfide, malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and 45Ca2+ uptake, respectively. NADPH oxidase was determined by immunoblotting.
Myocytes from Lep/Lep mice displayed depressed PS and +/- dL/dt, prolonged TR50, TR90, elevated resting Ca2+i, prolonged tau, reduced contractile capacity at high stimulus frequencies and diminished responsiveness to extracellular Ca2+ compared with lean controls. Cardiac glutathione/glutathione disulfide was decreased whereas malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl, membrane p47(phox) and membrane gp91(phox) were increased in the Lep/Lep group. SERCA isoenzyme 2a was markedly modified by oxidation in Lep/Lep hearts and associated with decreased 45Ca2+ uptake. The MHC isozyme displayed a shift from the alpha to the beta isoform in Lep/Lep hearts. Short-term incubation of angiotensin II with myocytes mimicked the mechanical defects, SERCA oxidation and 45Ca2+ uptake seen in Lep/Lep myocytes. Incubation of the NADPH oxidase inhibitor apocynin with Lep/Lep myocytes alleviated contractile defects without reversing SERCA oxidation or activity.
These data indicate that obesity-related cardiac defects may be related to NADPH oxidase activation, oxidative damage to SERCA and the MHC isozyme switch.
Beekeepers need to establish migratory apiaries to benefit from pollen and nectar source plants as in order to increase honey yield. Thus, following the flowering seasons of honey source plants has ...vital importance when deciding the route of migration. In this study, MODIS imagery was used to generate weekly NDVI data between 1
April to 31
August 2018, when beekeeping activities start and end in the study area. Although MODIS images have high temporal resolution, low spatial resolution (250 meters) makes them insufficient when deciding the crop types and plants. While detecting plants in natural plant areas requires high spatial resolution NDVI, Crop Coverage Registration System (CCRS) parcel-based crop coverage records can enrich the NDVI data without increasing spatial resolution in agricultural lands. Thus, the CCRS data were integrated with NDVI images for migratory beekeeping in agricultural areas as an innovation. To generate both high temporal and spatial resolution, NDVI and CCRS data were integrated together with a beekeeping suitability map to generate the apiary schedule. The results were verified with 176 existing apiary locations and production dates retrieved from field studies which revealed the existence of three seasons in the study area as early and late apiaries (in natural plant areas) and apiaries in agricultural lands. Accuracy analysis showed that 82% of the apiaries intersected with suitable locations and that apiaries in agricultural areas were detected five days earlier than in field studies and obtained more accurately than natural plant apiaries.
Bronchogenic cysts are rare lesions that form during early embryogenesis and are commonly located in the mediastinum. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts (RBs) are exceptionally rare, with only a ...handful of cases reported in the modern literature. Here, we report an RB found incidentally on imaging in a patient with suspected nephrolithiasis. We also review the unique imaging and histopathological findings of this entity and discuss why prophylactic surgery is considered the treatment of choice.
Netherton syndrome (NS) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by the triad of ichthyosiform erythroderma, hair shaft abnormality and an atopic diathesis. We report a case of a 20-year-old male ...patient presented with pruritus, decreased sweat secretion and generalized erythema on his body. Netherton syndrome is caused by mutations in the
gene that is a crucial role for epidermal barrier function in the skin. Different clinical and phenotypical features can occur based on various LEKTI-domains mutations. Diagnosis is made by the atopic story, hair shaft abnormality, cutaneous lesions and identification of the
gene mutation. In our patient, we detected a new splice site mutation in the
gene and pili annulati as hair abnormality. Affected patients are usually misdiagnosed because of cutaneous lesions such as atopic dermatitis. Therefore, each clinical finding should be evaluated together. We aimed to present a case with a new
gene mutation and different clinical features in NS.
We determined the antibiotic susceptibility and genetic mechanisms of resistance in clinical strains of Acinetobacter baumannii from Istanbul, Turkey. A total of 101 clinical strains were collected ...between November 2011 and July 2012. Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed using the Vitek 2 Compact system and E-test. Multiplex PCR was used for detecting blaOXA-51-like, blaOXA.-23-like, blaOXA-40-like and blaOXA-58-like genes. ISAba1, blaIMP-like, blaVIM-like, blaGES, blaVEB, blaPER-2, aac-3-Ia and aac-6'-Ib and NDM-1 genes were detected by PCR and sequencing. By multiplex PCR, all strains were positive for blaOXA-51, 79 strains carried blaOXA-23 and one strain carried blaOXA-40. blaOXA-51 and blaOXA-23 were found together in 79 strains. ISAba1 element was detected in 81 strains, and in all cases it was found upstream of blaOXA-51. GES-type carbapenemases were found in 24 strains (GES-11 in 16 strains and GES-22 in 8 strains) while blaPER-2, blaVEB-1, blaNDM-1, blaIMP- and blaVIM-type carbapenemases were not observed. Aminoglycoside modifying enzyme (aac-3-Ia and aac-6'Ib) genes were detected in 13 and 15 strains, respectively. Ninety-seven (96%) A. baumannii strains were defined as MDR and of these, 98% were extensively drug resistant (sensitive only to colistin). Colistin remains the only active compound against all clinical strains. As seen in other regions, OXA-type carbapenemases, with or without an upstream ISAba1, predominate but GES-type carbapenemases also appear to have a significant presence. REP-PCR analysis was performed for molecular typing and all strains were collected into 12 different groups. To our knowledge, this is the first report of GES-11 and OXA-40 in A. baumannii from Turkey.
This study was planned to determine the importance of sepiolite in broiler nutrition. For this purpose a total of 180 Ross 308 male broiler chicks aged one day were used. One control group and two ...treatment groups were designed for 6weeks of experimental period. Each group was divided into 10 replicates of 6 chicks each in pens. Sepiolite (Exal T®, Tolsa Turkey) was added at the level of 0, 1 and 2% to the diets of control group and the first and the second treatment groups as topdressed, respectively. Sepiolite supplementation at the level of 1% improved final body weight, weight gain and feed efficiency. Dietary treatments did not affect feed intake, gut pH, carcass yield, relative weight of the liver, kidney, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and carcass parts, footpad score, excreta and litter characteristics. Tibia characteristics, blood parameters and breast meat characteristics were not affected by the usage of sepiolite. Relative weight of the abdominal fat and ileal digesta viscosity were reduced and duodenal villus height, ileal digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and crude protein was increased with the usage of 1% sepiolite. It is concluded that dietary supplementation with 1% sepiolite was an effective feed additive for broiler feeding due to its beneficial effects on growth performance, abdominal fat percentage, ileal digesta viscosity, duodenal villus height and ileal digestibility.
•Sepiolite is a beneficial inert natural feed additive.•The addition of 1% sepiolite as topdressed in broiler improved performance which doesn’t require any change in diet formulation.•Sepiolite supplementation reduced abdominal fat percentage in broiler which is important for consumers.•Reduction in ileal viscosity along with increased digestibility with sepiolite supplementation is beneficial for digestion especially when using viscous cereals in the diets.
