An important mechanism for insect pest control should be the use of fungal entomopathogens. Even though these organisms have been studied for more than 100
y, their effective use in the field remains ...elusive. Recently, however, it has been discovered that many of these entomopathogenic fungi play additional roles in nature. They are endophytes, antagonists of plant pathogens, associates with the rhizosphere, and possibly even plant growth promoting agents. These findings indicate that the ecological role of these fungi in the environment is not fully understood and limits our ability to employ them successfully for pest management. In this paper, we review the recently discovered roles played by many entomopathogenic fungi and propose new research strategies focused on alternate uses for these fungi. It seems likely that these agents can be used in multiple roles in protecting plants from pests and diseases and at the same time promoting plant growth.
Postacute sequelae after the coronavirus disease (COVID) of 2019 (PASC) is increasingly recognized, although data on solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients (SOTRs) are limited. Using the National ...COVID Cohort Collaborative, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) of all adult SOTR and nonimmunosuppressed/immunocompromised (ISC) patients with acute COVID infection (August 1, 2021 to January 13, 2023) for a subsequent PASC diagnosis using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine not only the association of SOT status with PASC, but also other patient factors after stratifying by SOT status. Prior to PSM, there were 8769 SOT and 1 576 769 non-ISC patients with acute COVID infection. After PSM, 8756 SOTR and 8756 non-ISC patients were included; 2.2% of SOTR (n = 192) and 1.4% (n = 122) of non-ISC patients developed PASC (P value < .001). In the overall matched cohort, SOT was independently associated with PASC (adjusted odds ratio aOR, 1.48; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.09-2.01). Among SOTR, COVID infection severity (aOR, 11.6; 95% CI, 3.93-30.0 for severe vs mild disease), older age (aOR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.03 per year), and mycophenolate mofetil use (aOR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.38-3.05) were each independently associated with PASC. In non-ISC patients, only depression (aOR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.24-3.07) and COVID infection severity were. In conclusion, PASC occurs more commonly in SOTR than in non-ISC patients, with differences in risk profiles based on SOT status.
Although selective screening for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by abdominal palpation aimed at detecting AAAs has engendered considerable support, no population-based data pertaining to the ...positive predictive value (PPV) of the clinical assessment of AAAs in routine clinical practice are available. Therefore, we used the unique resources of the Rochester (Minn) Epidemiology Project and the Mayo Clinic computerized abdominal ultrasonography database to identify all residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota,who underwent ultrasound examination for a clinically suspected AAA between November 1, 1985, and October 31, 1987. Of 116 residents who were suspected of having an AAA on abdominal palpation and were referred for an ultrasound examination for confirmation, 17 patients had a 3.5-cm or greater AAA by ultrasound examination (PPV = 14.7%). The probability of AAA by ultrasound examination (PPV = 14.7%). The probability of AAA documentation by ultrasound examination given clinical suspicion of an AAA was associated with higher body mass index, older age,and presence of other macrovascular disease. In 17 patients aged 70 years or younger, without other macrovascular disease and with body mass index of 24 or less, only 1 had an AAA of 3.5 cm or greater (PPV = 6%), while 10 of 20 patients aged 70 years or older, with macrovascular disease,and with body mass index greater than 24 had an AAA of 3.5 cm or greater (PPV = 50%). These population-based data that highlight the poor PPV of the clinical assessment for AAAs indicate that abdominal palpation aimed at detecting AAAs as part of a periodic health examination may lead to a much higher rate of false-positive results than indicated by previous referral-based data. Further research is needed to identify patient subgroups in whom abdominal palpation for detection of AAAs will be cost-effective with respect to reduction in AAA mortality.
Objective
This study aimed to examine (1) whether the Strong Hearts, Healthy Communities intervention (SHHC) improved social network members’ (SNMs’) weight, exercise, and diet and (2) whether SNMs’ ...weight and behavioral changes were modified by their relationship closeness and/or spatial closeness with trial participants.
Methods
Eight towns received the SHHC intervention, which focused on building individual healthy behaviors and creating supportive social and built environments for exercise and healthy eating. Eight towns received an education‐only control intervention. SNMs (n = 487) were recruited to complete a questionnaire at baseline and at 6 months that asked about demographics, weight, height, exercise, and eating habits.
Results
SHHC’s effect on SNMs differed depending on their relationship closeness with trial participants. Among SNMs who had a very close relationship with trial participants, those associated with the intervention group lost more weight and decreased BMI more than those associated with the control group (weight kilograms between‐group difference: Δ = −1.68; 95% CI: −3.10 to −0.25; P = 0.021; BMI between‐group difference: Δ = −0.60; 95% CI: −1.16 to −0.04; P = 0.034). Spatial closeness did not modify any of SHHC’s ripple effects.
Conclusions
Relationship closeness, rather than spatial closeness, played an important role in influencing a rural community–based intervention’s ripple effects.
Surgical resection is the main curative modality for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but variation in the quality of care contributes to suboptimal survival rates. Improving surgical outcomes by ...eliminating quality deficits is a key strategy for improving population-level lung cancer survival. We evaluated the long-term survival effect of providing direct feedback on institutional performance in a population-based cohort.
The Mid-South Quality of Surgical Resection cohort includes all NSCLC resections at 11 hospitals in four contiguous Dartmouth Hospital Referral Regions in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. We evaluated resections from 2004 to 2013, before and after onset of a benchmarked performance feedback campaign to surgery and pathology teams in 2009.
We evaluated 2,206 patients: 56% preintervention (pre-era) and 44% postintervention (post-era). Preoperative positron emission tomography/computed tomography (46% vs 82%, p < 0.0001), brain scans (6% vs 21%, p < 0.0001), and bronchoscopy (8% vs 27%, p < 0.0001) were more frequently used in the post-era. Patients had 5-year survival of 47% (44% to 50%) in the pre-era compared with 53% (50% to 56%) in the post-era (p = 0.0028). The post-era had an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.85 (95% confidence interval CI, 0.75 to 0.97; p = 0.0158) compared with the pre-era. This differed by extent of resection (p = 0.0113): compared with the pre-era, the post-era adjusted hazard ratio was 0.49 (95% CI, 0.33 to 0.72) in pneumonectomy, 0.91 (95% CI, 0.79 to 1.05) in lobectomy/bilobectomy, and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.63 to 1.15) in segmentectomy/wedge resections.
Overall survival after surgical resection improved significantly in a high lung cancer mortality region of the United States. Reasons may include better selection of patients for pneumonectomy and more thorough staging.
Abstract
Background
Targeted gene NGS testing is available through many academic institutions and commercial entities and is increasingly incorporated in practice guidelines for glioblastoma (GBM). ...This single-center retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of incorporating NGS results in the management of GBM patients at a clinical trials-focused academic center.
Methods
We identified 1011 consecutive adult patients with pathologically confirmed GBM (IDHwt or IDHmut) who had somatic tumor sequencing (Oncopanel, ~500 cancer gene panel) at DFCI from 2013–2019. Clinical records of all IDHwt GBM patients were reviewed to capture clinical trial enrollment and off-label targeted therapy use based on NGS results.
Results
Of the 557 IDHwt GBM patients with sequencing, 182 entered clinical trials at diagnosis (32.7%) and 213 (38.2%) entered after recurrence. Sequencing results for 130 patients (23.3%) were utilized for clinical trial enrollment for either targeted therapy indications (6.9 % upfront and 27.7% at recurrent clinical trials and 3.1% for off-label targeted therapy) or exploratory studies (55.4% upfront and 6.9% recurrent clinical trials). Median overall survival was 20.1 months with no survival difference seen between patients enrolled in clinical trials compared to those who were not, in a posthoc analysis.
Conclusions
While NGS testing has become essential for improved molecular diagnostics, our study illustrates that targeted gene panels remain underutilized for selecting therapy in GBM-IDHwt. Targeted therapy and clinical trial design remain to be improved to help leverage the potential of NGS in clinical care.

= 0.003, log-rank test), while ...meclizine (Mec), an mTORC1 inhibitor, extended the male lifespan by 8% (

= 0.03). Asta was fed at 1840 ± 520 (9) ppm and Mec at 544 ± 48 (9) ppm, stated as mean ± SE (
n
) of independent diet preparations. Both were started at 12 months of age. The 90th percentile lifespan for both treatments was extended in absolute value by 6% in males, but neither was significant by the Wang–Allison test. Five other new agents were also tested as follows: fisetin, SG1002 (hydrogen sulfide donor), dimethyl fumarate, mycophenolic acid, and 4-phenylbutyrate. None of these increased lifespan significantly at the dose and method of administration tested in either sex. Amounts of dimethyl fumarate in the diet averaged 35% of the target dose, which may explain the absence of lifespan effects. Body weight was not significantly affected in males by any of the test agents. Late life weights were lower in females fed Asta and Mec, but lifespan was not significantly affected in these females. The male-specific lifespan benefits from Asta and Mec may provide insights into sex-specific aspects of aging.
Coral reefs are among the most diverse and iconic ecosystems on Earth, but a range of anthropogenic pressures are threatening their persistence. Owing to their remoteness, broad spatial coverage and ...cross‐jurisdictional locations, there are no high‐resolution remotely sensed maps available at the global scale. Here we present a framework that is capable of mapping coral reef habitats from individual reefs (~200 km2) to entire barrier reef systems (200 000 km2) and across vast ocean extents (>6 000 000 km2). This is the first time this has been demonstrated using a consistent and transparent remote sensing mapping framework. The ten maps that we present achieved good accuracy (78% mean overall accuracy) from multiple input image datasets and training data sources, and our framework was shown to be adaptable to either benthic or geomorphic reef features and across diverse coral reef environments. These new generation high‐resolution map data will be useful for supporting ecosystem risk assessments, detecting change in ecosystem dynamics and targeting efforts to monitor local‐scale changes in coral cover and reef health.
Here we present a mapping framework for coral reefs from the scale of individual reefs to the entire reef systems across millions of square kilometers of ocean. The framework can utilize a wide range of input covariate and training data sources, and outputs both geomorphic and benthic map types. The maps presented are the largest ever coral reefs maps produced from a consistent and transparent remote sensing approach.
Memory problems are among the most common complaints as people grow older. Using structural equation modeling of commensurate scores of anterograde memory from a large (N = 315), population-derived ...sample (www.cam-can.org), we provide evidence for three memory factors that are supported by distinct brain regions and show differential sensitivity to age. Associative memory and item memory are dramatically affected by age, even after adjusting for education level and fluid intelligence, whereas visual priming is not. Associative memory and item memory are differentially affected by emotional valence, and the age-related decline in associative memory is faster for negative than for positive or neutral stimuli. Gray-matter volume in the hippocampus, parahippocampus and fusiform cortex, and a white-matter index for the fornix, uncinate fasciculus and inferior longitudinal fasciculus, show differential contributions to the three memory factors. Together, these data demonstrate the extent to which differential ageing of the brain leads to differential patterns of memory loss.
