Après la reconquête de l’indépendance de la Pologne en 1918, de nombreux émigrés polonais en France se sont montrés particulièrement actifs dans le domaine culturel. Ce fut notamment le cas de ...Zygmunt Lubicz-Zaleski, pour qui la diaspora polonaise devait non seulement chercher à sauvegarder son identité, mais aussi étendre et approfondir en France le savoir sur la culture et la société polonaises. Les succès auxquels il est parvenu dans le domaine du développement de la collaboration avec les institutions françaises (notamment l’introduction de la langue et de la culture polonaises dans les études universitaires à l’École des langues orientales vivantes) en 1917, puis en 1923 à l’Institut d’études slaves) constituent le socle des structures actuelles de collaboration culturelle entre la France et la Pologne. En même temps, les nombreux contacts de Zaleski avec les élites intellectuelles polonaises ou françaises (Ernest Denis, André Mazon) ont élargi les horizons de la diaspora polonaise et préparé son épanouissement.
The post-colonial world outlook has created a novel research perspective enabling to renew the way literature had been viewed thitherto. Changes in approaching literary text, where the ...‘centre’/‘peripheries’ relation occurs to be relative, have not ceased taking place till this very day. This debilitation of cultural divisions conceals however a danger of chaos and uniformisation at the same time. This triggers more questions on cultural identity as a guarantee of subjective existence. A post-colonial perspective renders the ‘I vs. the Other’ relation a crucial one, making it the only option to self-determine. Literary text thus plays the role of not only extending a cultural identity but primarily, of making present the ego’s individual limits in comparative processes. As applied to Polish literature, such approach can lead to a new balance being struck between a ‘centre’ and a ‘periphery’, owing to interactive actions.
The article refers to Jerzy Jarzębski’s Powieść jako autokreacja The novel as selfcreation. In this collection of essays Bruno Schulz’s prose is both discussed together with other examples from ...Polish literature and presented as unique in terms of self-creation. This inconsistency is justified by Schulz’s worldview: he preferred ‘mythological delusion’ to purely verbal self-creation (ex nihilo). Following this lead, the author of the article adds to Jarzębski’s intuitions a few remarks on the complicated relationship between mythologisation and Schulz’s more or less hidden quest for self-creation. Schulz’s approach to the biblical myth of Joseph is juxtaposed with Die Geschichten Jaakobs by Thomas Mann, who kept on creating new variants of the original myth. Through contrast, Mann’s method reveals the self-creational tendencies of Schulz, who, reaching into the depths of his own prehistory, repudiates the biblical myth. At the same time, Schulz mythologises the reality, deliberately obliterating boundaries between poiesis and mythos and thus demonstrating demiurgic aspirations, which can be considered the final attempt to reconcile not only two poetics, but also two opposing visions of the world.
