A search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay B+ →K+$ν\bar{ν}$ is performed at the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The data sample ...corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 63 fb-1 collected at the Υ (4S) resonance and a sample of 9 fb-1 collected at an energy 60 MeV below the resonance. Because the measurable decay signature involves only a single charged kaon, a novel measurement approach is used that exploits not only the properties of the B+ →K+$ν\bar{ν}$ decay, but also the inclusive properties of the other B meson in the Υ(4S) $B\bar{B}$ event, to suppress the background from other B meson decays and light-quark pair production. This inclusive tagging approach offers a higher signal efficiency compared to previous searches. No significant signal is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of B+ →K+$ν\bar{ν}$ of 4.1 × 10-5 is set at the 90% confidence level.

Nuclear emulsion films are a tracking device with unique space resolution. Their use in nowadays large-scale experiments relies on the availability of automated microscope operating at very high ...speed. In this paper we describe the features and the latest improvements of the European Scanning System, a last-generation automated microscope for emulsion scanning. In particular, we present a new method for the recovery of tracking inefficiencies. Stacks of double coated emulsion films have been exposed to a 10GeV/c pion beam. Efficiencies as high as 98% have been achieved for minimum ionising particle tracks perpendicular to the emulsion films and of 93% for tracks with tan(θ)≃0.8.

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron–positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgrounds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these ...backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle II experiment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKEKB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also report on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions from synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds originating from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV electron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds forward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector.

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is ...based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies.

The way a charm-quark fragments into a charmed hadron is a challenging problem both for the theoretical and the experimental particle physics. Moreover, in neutrino induced charm-production, peculiar ...processes occur such as quasi-elastic and diffractive charm-production which make the results from other experiments not directly comparable. We present here a method to extract the charmed fractions in neutrino induced events by using results from e+e−, πN, γN experiments while taking into account the peculiarities of charm-production in neutrino interactions. As results, we predict the fragmentation functions as a function of the neutrino energy and the semi-muonic branching ratio, Bμ, and compare them with the available data.

An absolute measurement of the $\Lambda^{+}_c$ lifetime is reported using $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow pK^-\pi^+$ decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the ...SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, is $207.2~\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. The result, $\tau(\Lambda^{+}_c) = 203.20 \pm 0.89 \,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.77 \,\mathrm{(syst)}$ fs, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.
