Background: hyponatremia represents one of the most commonly encountered conditions in hospitalized patients, multiple mechanisms being cited so far, neoplastic syndromes being an important cause. ...The aim of the current paper is to analyse the presence and influence of the short- and long-term outcomes of hyponatremia on ovarian cancer patients submitted to surgery for advanced stage ovarian cancer. Method: 57 patients diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer were submitted to surgery between 2014-2020. The patients were further classified according to the preoperative value of sodium into two groups. Results: there were 21 cases with preoperative normal values of sodium and respectively 36 cases with hyponatremia. Patients with preoperative hyponatremia associated a significantly higher rate of early postoperative complications and a significantly poorer long-term outcome. Therefore, cases with hyponatremia reported a mean disease-free survival of 10.8 months and respectively a mean overall survival of 18.5 months while cases with normal natrium levels reported a mean disease-free survival of 31.4 months and respectively a mean overall survival of 49.7 months (p=0.0001 and p 0.001). Conclusions: patients with lower preoperative values of sodium have a higher risk of developing postoperative complications and a significantly poorer outcome when compared to cases presenting normal levels of sodium preoperatively.
In this paper, we study electro-pneumatic systems with air motors. Besides the pneumatic motors, the cylinders are the actuators which are the most used in electro-pneumatic systems. The study of ...pneumatic and electro-pneumatic circuits is performed in the FluidSim from Festo. At the beginning, we make simple pneumatic systems with single or two air motors. We continue with simple and complex electropneumatic systems that have air motors. The pneumatic motors are generally used for the development of the following installations: pump drivers, conveyor drivers, mixing equipment, pharmaceutical packaging, tension devices, hose reels, winches, hoists, turntables, etc.

Introduction. The quality of life of patients after total laryngectomy is influenced by both the disease and the radical therapeutic interventions. After surgical treatment, vocal rehabilitation, ...along with pulmonary and deglutition rehabilitation, are necessary. The objective of the study was to assess the quality of life in patients with total laryngectomy. Materials and methods. A questionnaire with 14 questions was randomly addressed to 100 patients with total laryngectomy who presented to Coltea Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, over a period of three months. Results. Fifty patients answered that they had no pain. Regarding everyday activities, 34 patients answered that they were as active as before surgery. Regarding their appearance, 50 patients answered that there is no change, or the change is minor, while 39 answered that their appearance bothers them, but they remain active, and 5 answered that they feel disfigured and limit their activity, while 6 patients answered that they cannot be with other people because of their aspect. 34 patients answered that they could swallow as well as prior to surgery, other 34 patients answered that they cannot swallow certain foods, while 21 answered that they only swallow liquid food or are dependent on a feeding tube. Regarding everyday activity, 67 patients answered there are times when they cannot keep up with their old pace, but they get out of the house and enjoy life. About their mood, 38 patients answered that they were not in a good mood, nor depressed, while 36 said their mood is generally good and only occasionally affected by cancer. Six patients answered that their mood is excellent, while 15 patients were somewhat depressed and 5 were extremely depressed. Conclusions. The quality of life is influenced by the patients’ appearance after total laryngectomy, and their ability to maintain everyday activities. Swallowing, taste and saliva quality have a great impact on the quality of life of patients with total laryngectomy and also influence their nutritional status.
Coating the surfaces of implantable materials with various active principles to ensure inhibition of microbial adhesion, is a solution to reduce infections associated with dental implant. The aim of ...the study was to optimize the polydopamine films coating on the Ti-6Al-6V alloy surface in order to obtain a maximum of antimicrobial/antibiofilm efficacy and reduced cytotoxicity. Surface characterization was performed by evaluating the morphology (SEM, AFM) and structures (Solid-state 13C NMR and EPR). Antimicrobial activity was assessed by logarithmic reduction of CFU/mL, and the antibiofilm activity by reducing the adhesion of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans strains. The release of NO was observed especially for C. albicans strain, which confirms the results obtained for microbial adhesion. Among the PDA coatings, for 0.45:0.88 (KMnO4:dopamine) molar ratio the optimal compromise was obtained in terms of antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity, while the 0.1:1.5 ratio (KMnO4:dopamine) led to higher NO release and implicitly the reduction of the adhesion capacities only for C. albicans, being slightly cytotoxic but with moderate release of LDH. The proposed materials can be used to reduce the adhesion of yeast to the implantable material and thus inhibit the formation of microbial biofilms.
Background: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. The differential diagnosis of this entity remains one of the most encountered problems: from thalassemia, neoplasia, ...malabsorbtion syndrome to chronic kidney disease under hemodialysis. Case report: This case report describes clinical and paraclinical features of a 75-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities and iron deficiency anemia. We emphasize on the importance of endoscopic videocapsule examination for the accurate diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia when other methods fail (endoscopy and colonoscopy), thus revealing the source of bleeding in a small bowel benign polyp. Thus, tumors of the small intestine present as a unique challenging diagnosis. Conclusion: Endoscopic videocapsule, even if expensive, should remain an important tool in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia with normal upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. Small bowel tumors are seldom considered as a diagnostic hypothesis, but should not be overlooked, especially when alarm symptoms are present (weight loss, melena, hematochesia).

We report the case of a 62-year-old Caucasian man, an ex-smoker, who presented to the emergency room complaining of intense lower back pain followed by immediate bilateral loss of inferior limbs ...motor function. Clinical examination showed complete paralysis and paranesthesia in both legs, while pain and temperature sensory examination revealed a sensory level at dermatome T6, with normal touch, vibration, and position senses. His blood pressure was 190/100 mmHg. Computed tomography demonstrated dilated thoracic aorta (maximum diameter 44 mm) and abdominal aorta (maximum 58 mm), with extended intramural hematoma (IMH), thus establishing the diagnosis of type A aortic IMH complicated with paraplegia through spinal perfusion deficit. Due to the extension of the lesions, surgical intervention for aortic repair was considered at high risk while cerebrospinal fluid drainage was not recommended by the neurologist. The patient remained stable while hospitalized and was released from the hospital with mild improvement of neurological deficiencies.
