This study aimed to measure and validate altitudes from existing sources with direct GNSS measurements and airborne lidar data. For this purpose, 12 mountain peaks located in the south part of Polish ...territory were selected. Measurements were performed using a GNSS receiver using the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) or static techniques enabling altitude measurements with accuracy of 10 cm. GNSS was treated as the primary data source, as the direct field measurements can determine the highest point on each peak. The obtained results were confronted with historical, internet sources, and official altitude data. Moreover, each altitude was determined using lidar data from an airborne lidar dataset of Poland from the ISOK program and provided by the national agency. Significant discrepancies in data were already detected during the analysis of internet materials and traditional maps, up to a few meters. The differences between measured and internet sources in altitude of mountain peak range from 27 cm to 504 cm. This study has shown the need to re-measure the altitudes of the mountain peaks and determine the highest point correctly.
This study examined the dynamics of irregular migration and coping strategies of irregular migrants among irregular returnees in Nigeria. The aim was to understand the patterns of irregular ...migration, coping strategies of irregular migrants, and condition of homeland among irregular returnees. The study adopted the non-experimental research design and used qualitative tools to capture important nuances, impressions and anecdotes from thirty-eight (38) respondents in Lagos State. Data were gathered by In-depth Interviews (IDIs) and analyzed through manual content analysis. Results indicate that economic factors tend to influence irregular migration, especially among those who go by land; while a number of migrants in irregular situation adopt different strategies such as changing their real names and engaging in underground jobs in destination places to cope. Furthermore, many irregular returnees were unable to acquire useful skills or raise capital during their stay; this made efforts towards self-improvement and contribution to homeland development difficult.
Negative pregnancy outcomes (NPOs) are pregnancy-related occurrences that affect the health of mothers and children in the course of child bearing. NPOs may manifest as a miscarriage, stillbirth or ...preterm birth. Nigeria contributes up to 12% of the global burden of stillbirths, and a significant number of these occurrences are connected with inadequate utilisation of antenatal care services. This study investigated the influence of social factors such as attitudes towards antenatal clinics, religious affiliation, education and spousal discussion on antenatal service attendance and experiences of NPOs among ever-married men and women in Shomolu, Lagos State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was utilised for data collection among 480 participants.
Results showed that religion and educational level of husbands were significant predictors of their wives’ experiences of NPOs. Among women, Muslims and adherents of traditional religion were respectively 2.49 and 5.65 times more likely to experience NPOs relative to their Christian counterparts. Similarly, women who registered for antenatal care at a conventional facility were 1.14 less likely to experience NPOs than their unregistered counterparts. Findings also indicated a statistically significant difference between the mean number of antenatal care attendance by women who discussed with their husbands when to become pregnant and those who did not discuss it with their husbands. As a way forward, pregnant women should be given the necessary support to seek antenatal care from skilled service providers at conventional centres.
This paper is an attempt to examine the nexus between return migration and development in Nigeria. The paper reveals that the bulk of return migrants in the country are the repatriated, while the ...rate of return of professional migrants is low. It was observed that the ability of migrants to contribute to homeland development is influenced by their destination; those from Europe and North America are more likely to act as agents of change than their counterparts within Africa. A major obstacle to the return of professionals is the unfavorable living and investment conditions in the country. The paper concludes that for efforts to stimulate return of innovative migrants to succeed, genuine attempts must be made, to provide an enabling environment to make return a worthwhile endeavor for migrants.
In many parts of Nigeria, women bear the greater burden of family planning responsibilities because of men’s negative attitude towards modern family planning methods (MFPMs). This situation has the ...propensity to promote high fertility and adverse reproductive health outcomes. This study examined men’s perceptions and concerns about adopting MFPMs in Delta State, Nigeria. Understanding men’s concerns about the use of MFPMs is important for addressing some misconceptions and stimulating uptake of MFPMs among men. The study was mainly qualitative involving 24 in-depth interviews (IDIs) and three focus group discussions (FGDs) among men ages 15 and 64 years. Findings indicate that most men have knowledge of condom, but regular use was low. Many of them were opposed to their wives’ adoption of MFPMs. Also, knowledge of vasectomy was low and some men feared that adopting vasectomy would harm their sexual vitality. The study concluded that these concerns operate as barriers to adequate adoption of MFPMs among men. The study recommended intensive reorientation on vasectomy, and men who have achieved their desired fertility can be encouraged to undergo the procedure.

Evidence indicates that there is a low level of use of modern family planning methods among men in Nigeria. As a result, many women continue to bear children even after having their desired family ...size; hence, the persistent high rate of fertility and maternal and child mortality in the country. This study is an attempt to investigate the role of conception on masculinity among men, and how it affects their involvement in family planning and household tasks in Delta State. It aimed to see whether how men view their position as husbands, their number of sexual partners and how they interpret sexuality influence their attitudes towards involvement in family planning and household’s tasks. Results indicate that men’s view of their position in marriage affects their involvement in family planning with p<0.001 at an alpha level of 0.05. Logistics regression model reveals that men’s level of education is a predictor to males’ involvement in household tasks. In other words, the higher the education among men, the less likely they will involve in household tasks. On the basis of the findings, it was recommended that the nation’s educational curricular be reviewed to include teachings that will encourage men to participate in household tasks.
