Hemiarthroplasty of the humeral head, using a stainless steel cup, was performed in 26 shoulders of patients with rheumatoid arthritis who had severe pain and loss of function. All the shoulders were ...Larsen's radiographic Grade 4 or 5. After 2 (1-5) years, all the shoulders were painless and had satisfactory function. Partial radiolucent zones exceeding 1 mm were seen in three shoulders.
Twelve shoulders in 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were treated with cemented cup hemiarthroplasty and examined by roentgen stereo photogrammetry during the first year after surgery. One cup ...migrated 0.5 mm while 11 remained well fixed. Our findings suggest that long-term prosthetic fixation may be achieved.
A new method for measuring the position of a shoulder arthrodesis is presented. With Moiré photography and two mirrors, it is possible to find the neutral position of the scapula and to record the ...position of the humerus with great accuracy.
Thirty-one patients (34 joints) with pain due to carpometacarpal joint derangement were reviewed 1/2 to 12 years after a trapezium replacement arthroplasty using a Swanson silicone prosthesis. At ...review, 25 hands were free from pain, and nine had some pain on exertion. Mobility and strength were generally well restored. The radiographic examination revealed 12 prosthesis-fractures, three dislocations, and five cases of incongruity. However, all patients were satisfied with the results of the operation.

Deacetylated chitin derivatives have been widely studied for tissue engineering purposes. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of an injectable product containing a 50% deacetylated chitin ...derivative (BoneReg-Inject™) and an existing product (chronOS Inject
) serving as a predicate device. A sheep model with a critical size drill hole in the tibial plateau was used. Holes of 8 mm diameter and 30 mm length were drilled bilaterally into the proximal area of the tibia and BoneReg-Inject™ or chronOS Inject
were injected into the right leg holes. Comparison of resorption and bone formation in vivo was made by X-ray micro-CT and histological evaluation after a live phase of 12 weeks. Long-term effects of BoneReg-Inject™ were studied using a 13-month live period. Significant differences were observed in (1) amount of new bone within implant (
< 0.001), higher in BoneReg-Inject
, (2) signs of cartilage tissue (
= 0.003), more pronounced in BoneReg-Inject
, and (3) signs of fibrous tissue (
< 0.001), less pronounced in BoneReg-Inject
. Mineral content at 13 months postoperative was significantly higher than at 12 weeks (
< 0.001 and
< 0.05, for implant core and rim, respectively). The data demonstrate the potential of deacetylated chitin derivatives to stimulate bone formation.
A comprehensive cancer approach covering the entire research–care–prevention continuum can achieve a 10‐year cancer‐specific survival for 75% of patients diagnosed in EU member states with ...well‐developed health care by 2030. To ensure access to a critical mass of patient biological and technological resources, infrastructures for translational research, clinical and prevention trials, and outcomes research are needed. Here, we provide recommendations for achieving key targets and prioritize research areas.
A comprehensive translational cancer research approach focused on personalized and precision medicine, and covering the entire cancer research–care–prevention continuum has the potential to achieve in 2030 a 10‐year cancer‐specific survival for 75% of patients diagnosed in European Union (EU) member states with a well‐developed healthcare system. Concerted actions across this continuum that spans from basic and preclinical research through clinical and prevention research to outcomes research, along with the establishment of interconnected high‐quality infrastructures for translational research, clinical and prevention trials and outcomes research, will ensure that science‐driven and social innovations benefit patients and individuals at risk across the EU. European infrastructures involving comprehensive cancer centres (CCCs) and CCC‐like entities will provide researchers with access to the required critical mass of patients, biological materials and technological resources and can bridge research with healthcare systems. Here, we prioritize research areas to ensure a balanced research portfolio and provide recommendations for achieving key targets. Meeting these targets will require harmonization of EU and national priorities and policies, improved research coordination at the national, regional and EU level and increasingly efficient and flexible funding mechanisms. Long‐term support by the EU and commitment of Member States to specialized schemes are also needed for the establishment and sustainability of trans‐border infrastructures and networks. In addition to effectively engaging policymakers, all relevant stakeholders within the entire continuum should consensually inform policy through evidence‐based advice.
Melatonin has attenuated myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury in experimental studies. We hypothesized that the administration of melatonin during acute myocardial reperfusion improves myocardial ...salvage index in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Patients (
n
= 48) were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to intracoronary and intravenous melatonin (total 50 mg) or placebo. The myocardial salvage index assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at day 4 (± 1 day) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention was similar in the melatonin group (
n
= 22) at 55.3% (95% CI 47.0–63.6) and the placebo group (
n
= 19) at 61.5% (95% CI 57.5–65.5),
p
= 0.21. The levels of high-sensitive troponin T, creatinine kinase myocardial band, and oxidative biomarkers (advanced oxidation protein products, malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase) were similar in the groups. The frequency of clinical events at 90 days did not differ between the groups. In conclusion, melatonin did not improve the myocardial salvage index after primary percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction compared with placebo.
