Sixty-four crossbred heifers (451 ± 23 kg) were used in a 42-d feeding trial (4 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design) to evaluate the influence of preslaughter zilpaterol ...hydrochloride withdrawal period on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Heifers were fed a diet based on steam-flaked corn (2.13 Mcal of NEsubm/kg). Treatments were 1) control, no zilpaterol supplementation; 2) zilpaterol supplementation for 30 d, drug withdrawn from the diet 3 d preslaughter (ZIL-3); 3) zilpaterol supplementation for 30 d, drug withdrawn 6 d preslaughter (ZIL-6), and 4) zilpaterol supplementation for 30 d, drug withdrawn 12 d preslaughter (ZIL-12). Zilpaterol was supplemented at the rate of 0.15 mg/kg of BW daily. Intake of DM averaged 9.2 ± 0.26 kg/d and was not affected (P ≥ 0.36) by treatment. Compared with control heifers, ZIL-3 increased (P < 0.01) carcass-adjusted ADG (59%), G:F (57%), apparent dietary NErn (31%), and decreased observed/expected DM1 (25%). Treatment with ZIL-3 did not affect marbling score (P = 0.49) or backfat thickness (P = 0.17), but compared with the control group, increased HCW (3.6%, P = 0.03), carcass dressing percentage (3.2%, P 0.02), LM area (6.3%, P = 0.05), and reduced trimmed fat (31%, P = 0.03). Prolonging the period of zilpaterol withdrawal preslaughter tended to decrease carcass-adjusted ADG (linear, P = 0.11), G:F (linear, P 0.08), apparent dietary NErn (linear, P = 0.11), and carcass dressing percentage (linear, P = 0.11). We conclude that growth performance and carcass yield responses to zilpaterol supplementation are negatively affected by prolonging the period of zilpaterol withdrawal beyond 3 d (the required minimum withdrawal period according to label). Drug withdrawal period may be a relevant factor in explaining variation in performance response to zilpaterol supplementation in commercial feedlots. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Since first noticed by Shapley in 1939, a faint object coincident with the Fornax dwarf spheroidal has long been discussed as a possible sixth globular cluster (GC) system. However, debate has ...continued over whether this overdensity is a statistical artifact or a blended galaxy group. In this Letter we demonstrate, using deep DECam imaging data, that this object is well resolved into stars and is a bona fide star cluster. The stellar overdensity of this cluster is statistically significant at the level of ∼6-6.7 in several different photometric catalogs including Gaia. Therefore, it is highly unlikely to be caused by random fluctuation. We show that Fornax 6 is a star cluster with a peculiarly low surface brightness and irregular shape, which may indicate a strong tidal influence from its host galaxy. The Hess diagram of Fornax 6 is largely consistent with that of Fornax field stars, but it appears to be slightly bluer. However, it is still likely more metal-rich than most of the GCs in the system. Faint clusters like Fornax 6 that orbit and potentially get disrupted in the centers of dwarf galaxies can prove crucial for constraining the dark matter distribution in Milky Way satellites.
ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a stellar stream in the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 (Y1A1) data. The discovery was made through simple color-magnitude filters and visual inspection of the Y1A1 ...data. We refer to this new object as the Phoenix stream, after its resident constellation. After subtraction of the background stellar population we detect a clear signal of a simple stellar population. By fitting the ridge line of the stream in color-magnitude space, we find that a stellar population with age τ = 11.5 0.5 Gyr and Fe/H < −1.6, located 17.5 0.9 kpc from the Sun, gives an adequate description of the stream stellar population. The stream is detected over an extension of 8 1 (2.5 kpc) and has a width of ∼54 pc assuming a Gaussian profile, indicating that a globular cluster (GC) is a probable progenitor. There is no known GC within 5 kpc that is compatible with being the progenitor of the stream, assuming that the stream traces its orbit. We examined overdensities (ODs) along the stream, however, no obvious counterpart-bound stellar system is visible in the coadded images. We also find ODs along the stream that appear to be symmetrically distributed-consistent with the epicyclic OD scenario for the formation of cold streams-as well as a misalignment between the northern and southern part of stream. Despite the close proximity we find no evidence that this stream and the halo cluster NGC 1261 have a common accretion origin linked to the recently found EriPhe OD.

In this paper, a design of an adaptive observer for linear parameter varying (LPV) systems is proposed. This observer must be able to estimate simultaneously states and parameters. The estimated ...parameter vector is used to compute the scheduling functions and thus interpolate the local linear models. Its conditions of existence and stability are given and its design is obtained in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). The efficiency of the proposed approach is illustrated by an academic example.
Electrocardiographic (ECG) measurements were recorded in two subspecies of awake, apparently healthy, wild manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris and T. m. manatus) undergoing routine field ...examinations in Florida and Belize. Six unsedated juveniles (dependent and independent calves) and 6 adults were restrained in ventral recumbency for ECG measurements. Six lead ECGs were recorded for all manatees and the following parameters were determined: heart rate and rhythm; P, QRS, and T wave morphology, amplitude, and duration; and mean electrical axis (MEA). Statistical differences using a t-test for equality of means were determined. No statistical difference was seen based on sex or subspecies of manatees in the above measured criteria. Statistical differences existed in heart rate (P = 0.047), P wave duration (P = 0.019), PR interval (P = 0.025), and MEA (P = 0.021) between adult manatees and calves. Our findings revealed normal sinus rhythms, no detectable arrhythmias, prolonged PR and QT intervals, prolonged P wave duration, and small R wave amplitude as compared with cetacea and other marine mammals. This paper documents the techniques for and baseline recordings of ECGs in juvenile and adult free-living manatees. It also demonstrates that continual assessment of cardiac electrical activity in the awake manatee can be completed and can be used to aid veterinarians and biologists in routine health assessment, during procedures, and in detecting the presence of cardiac disease or dysfunction.
Deposition of Ti was carried out by laser ablation onto hydroxyapatite porous discs in an Ar atmosphere. Ti nanoparticles were deposited onto HAp surface in order to modify its roughness and ...morphology as it is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). A homogeneous distribution of Ti over the disc surface was corroborated by elemental mapping. A comparison of the hydroxyapatite hardness before and after deposition was performed using SPM nanoindentation. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) showed that the Ti nanoparticles obtained were covered by an oxygen shell. It is shown that surface modifications of the covered HAp by Ti result in better mechanical properties, reducing the possible damage to the HAp ceramic by friction or impacts as it often happens in meniscus, bone junctions and the inclusion of prosthesis for human treatments.
