In this contribution, we present the latest updates on the energy spectrum characterization obtained with data from the Pierre Auger Observatory. We present the measurement of the spectrum from ...6×1015 eV up to above 1020 eV, obtained by combining five different methods. The exposure of over 80,000 km2 sr yr has been accumulated above the ankle region, making this the best estimate of the spectrum ever achieved in this energy range. The wide zenith angle range covered by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the enormous exposure also allow us to measure the spectrum in different regions of the sky. After a description of the techniques used to reconstruct the spectrum, the spectral features will be presented, and the astrophysical implications of the spectral shape will be briefly discussed.
The Mini-EUSO telescope is designed by the JEM-EUSO Collaboration to observe the UV emission of the Earth from the vantage point of the International Space Station (ISS) in low Earth orbit. The main ...goal of the mission is to map the Earth in the UV, thus increasing the technological readiness level of future EUSO experiments and to lay the groundwork for the detection of Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays (EECRs) from space (Ebisuzaki et al., 2014). Due to its high time resolution of 2.5 μs, Mini-EUSO is capable of detecting a wide range of UV phenomena in the Earth’s atmosphere. In order to maximise the scientific return of the mission, it is necessary to implement a multi-level trigger logic for data selection over different timescales. This logic is key to the success of the mission and thus must be thoroughly tested and carefully integrated into the data processing system prior to the launch. This article introduces the motivation behind the trigger design and details the integration and testing of the logic.
Radiotherapy with concurrent 5-fluorouracil/mitomycin-C based chemotherapy has been established as definitive standard therapy approach for anal cancer. Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) leads ...to a precise treatment of the tumor, allowing dose escalation on Gross Tumor Volume (GTV), with a surrounding healthy tissues sparing. Our study assessed the impact of 18-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18FDG-PET/CT) on the radiotherapy contouring process and its contribution to lymphatic spread detection, resulting to a personalization of Clinical Target Volume (CTV) and dose prescription.
Thirty-seven patients, with histologically proven squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCAC) were analyzed. All patients were evaluated with history and physical examination, trans-anal endoscopic ultrasound, pelvis magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest, abdomen and pelvis and planning 18FDG-PET/CT. The GTV and CTV were drawn on CT, MRI and 18FDG-PET/CT fused images.
Thirty-four (91%) out of 37 patients presented lymph nodes involvement, in one or more areas, detected on 18FDG-PET/CT and/or MRI. The 18FDG-PET/CT showed positive lymph nodes not detected on MRI imaging (PET+, MRI-) in 14/37 patients (38%). In 14 cases, 18FDG-PET/CT allowed to a dose escalation in the involved nodes. The 18FDG-PET/CT fused images led to change the stage in 5/37(14%) cases: four cases from N0 to N1 (inguinal lymph nodes) and in one case from M0 to M1 (common iliac lymph nodes).
The 18FDG-PET/CT has a potentially relevant impact in staging and target volume delineation/definition in patients affected by anal cancer. In our experience, clinical stage variation occurred in 14% of cases. More investigations are needed to define the role of 18FDG-PET/CT in the target volume delineation of anal cancer.

eV) with experiments such as K-EUSO. TUS data offer the opportunity to develop strategies in the analysis and reconstruction of the events which will be essential for future space-based missions. During its operation, TUS has detected about 80 thousand events which have been subject to an offline analysis to select among them those that satisfy basic temporal and spatial criteria of EECRs. A few events passed this first screening. In order to perform a deeper analysis of such candidates, a dedicated version of ESAF (EUSO Simulation and Analysis Framework) code as well as a detailed modelling of TUS optics and detector are being developed.
we present our 7-years' experience with fiducial gold markers inserted before Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) focusing on our echo-guided technique reporting early and late complications.
78 ...prostate cancer (PCA) patients who underwent fiducial markers placement for adaptive IGRT (period 2007-2014) were selected. Mean patient age was 75 years (range 60-81), mean PSA 7.8 ng/ml (range 3.1-10), clinical stage < T3, mean Gleason Score 6.4 (range 6-7). We recorded early and late complications. Maximum distance between the Clinical Target Volume (CTV) and Planning Target Volume (PTV) was assessed for each direction and the mean PTV reduction was estimated.
we describe in details our echo-guided technique of intraprostatic gold fiducial markers insertion prior to adaptative IGRT. We report rare early toxicity (5-7% grade 1-2), a mean PTV reduction of 37% and a very low late toxicity (only 3.4% bladder G3 and 8% rectal G2 side effects).
Our technique of fiducial gold markers implantation for adaptative IGRT is safe and well-tolerated and it resulted helpful to reduce CTV-PTV margin in all cases; the effects on clinical practice seem significant in terms of late toxicity but further investigations are needed with longer follow-up.
The Tracking Ultraviolet Setup (TUS) was the first orbital detector aimed to check the possibility of recording ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at E≳100 EeV by measuring the fluorescence ...signal of extensive air showers in the atmosphere. TUS was an experiment funded by the Russian Space Agency ROSCOSMOS, and it operated as a part of the scientific payload of the Lomonosov satellite since April 2016 till late 2017. During its mission, TUS registered almost 80,000 events in its main operation mode, with a few of them being sufficiently interesting to be more deeply scrutinized as they showed light profile and duration similar to UHECR events, even though much brighter. At the same time, the data acquired by TUS in different acquisition modes have been used to search for more exotic matter such us strangelets and nuclearites, and to measure occurrence, time profile and signal amplitude of different classes of transient luminous events among other scientific objectives, showing the interdisciplinary capability of a space-based observatory for UHECRs. In this paper, we report a selection of studies and results obtained with the TUS telescope which will be presented and placed in the contest of the present and future missions dedicated to the observation of UHECRs from space such as Mini-EUSO, K-EUSO and POEMMA.
K-EUSO (KLYPVE-EUSO) is a planned orbital mission aimed at studying ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) by detecting fluorescence and Cherenkov light emitted by extensive air showers in the ...nocturnal atmosphere of Earth in the ultraviolet (UV) range. The observatory is being developed within the JEM-EUSO collaboration and is planned to be deployed on the International Space Station after 2025 and operated for at least two years. The telescope, consisting of ∼105 independent pixels, will allow a spatial resolution of ∼0.6 km on the ground, and, from a 400 km altitude, it will achieve a large and full sky exposure to sample the highest energy range of the UHECR spectrum. We provide a comprehensive review of the current status of the development of the K-EUSO experiment, paying special attention to its hardware parts and expected performance. We demonstrate how results of the K-EUSO mission can complement the achievements of the existing ground-based experiments and push forward the intriguing studies of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, as well as bring new knowledge about other phenomena manifesting themselves in the atmosphere in the UV range.
In this article, we present cutting-edge machine learning-based techniques for the detection and reconstruction of meteors and space debris in the Mini-EUSO experiment, a detector installed on board ...of the International Space Station, and pointing toward the Earth. We base our approach on a recent technique, the STACKing method plus Convolutional Neural Network (STACK-CNN), originally developed as an online trigger in an orbiting remediation system to detect space debris. Our proposed method, the refined-STACKing method plus convolutional neural network (R-Stack-CNN), makes the STACKing method plus convolutional neural network (STACK-CNN) more robust, thanks to a random forest that learns the temporal development of these events in the camera. We prove the flexibility of our method by showing that it is sensitive to any space object that moves linearly in the field of view. First, we search small space debris, never observed by Mini-EUSO. Due to the limiting statistics, also in this case, no debris were found. However, since meteors produce signals similar to space debris but they are much more frequent, the R-Stack-CNN is adapted to identify such events while avoiding the numerous false positives of the Stack-CNN. Results from real data show that the R-Stack-CNN is able to find more meteors than a classical thresholding method and a new method of two neural networks. We also show that the method is also able to accurately reconstruct speed and direction of meteors with simulated data.
