The mass accretion rate, M sub(acc), is a key quantity for the understanding of the physical processes governing the evolution of accretion discs around young low-mass (Mlow *< or =2.0 M sub(middot ...in circle)) stars and substellar objects (YSOs). We present here the results of a study of the stellar and accretion properties of the (almost) complete sample of class II and transitional YSOs in the Lupus I, II, III and IV clouds, based on spectroscopic data acquired with the VLT/X-shooter spectrograph. Our study combines the dataset from our previous work with new observations of 55 additional objects. We have investigated 92 YSO candidates in total, 11 of which have been definitely identified with giant stars unrelated to Lupus. The stellar and accretion properties of the 81 bona fide YSOs, which represent more than 90% of the whole class II and transition disc YSO population in the aforementioned Lupus clouds, have been homogeneously and self-consistently derived, allowing for an unbiased study of accretion and its relationship with stellar parameters. The accretion luminosity, L sub(acc), increases with the stellar luminosity, Llow *, with an overall slope of ~1.6, similar but with a smaller scatter than in previous studies. There is a significant lack of strong accretors below Llow *approximate 0.1L sub(middot in circle), where L sub(acc) is always lower than 0.01Llow *. We argue that the L sub(acc)-Llow * slope is not due to observational biases, but is a true property of the Lupus YSOs. The logM sub(acc)- logMlow * correlation shows a statistically significant evidence of a break, with a steeper relation for Mlow *< or =0.2M sub(middot in circle) and a flatter slope for higher masses. The bimodality of the M sub(acc)- Mlow * relation is confirmed with four different evolutionary models used to derive the stellar mass. The bimodal behaviour of the observed relationship supports the importance of modelling self-gravity in the early evolution of the more massive discs, but other processes, such as photo-evaporation and planet formation during the YSO's lifetime, may also lead to disc dispersal on different timescales depending on the stellar mass. The sample studied here more than doubles the number of YSOs with homogeneously and simultaneously determined L sub(acc) and luminosity, L sub(line), of many permitted emission lines. Hence, we also refined the empirical relationships between L sub(acc) and L sub(line) on a more solid statistical basis.
Context. Studies of the formation and evolution of young stars and their disks rely on knowledge of the stellar parameters of the young stars. The derivation of these parameters is commonly based on ...comparison with photospheric template spectra. Furthermore, chromospheric emission in young active stars impacts the measurement of mass accretion rates, a key quantity for studying disk evolution. Aims. Here we derive stellar properties of low-mass (M⋆≲ 2 M⊙) pre-main sequence stars without disks, which represent ideal photospheric templates for studies of young stars. We also use these spectra to constrain the impact of chromospheric emission on the measurements of mass accretion rates. The spectra are reduced, flux-calibrated, and corrected for telluric absorption, and are made available to the community. Methods. We derive the spectral type for our targets by analyzing the photospheric molecular features present in their VLT/X-shooter spectra by means of spectral indices and comparison of the relative strength of photospheric absorption features. We also measure effective temperature, gravity, projected rotational velocity, and radial velocity from our spectra by fitting them with synthetic spectra with the ROTFIT tool. The targets have negligible extinction (AV< 0.5 mag) and spectral type from G5 to K6, and from M6.5 to M8. They thus complement the library of photospheric templates presented in our previous publication. We perform synthetic photometry on the spectra to derive the typical colors of young stars in different filters. We measure the luminosity of the emission lines present in the spectra and estimate the noise due to chromospheric emission in the measurements of accretion luminosity in accreting stars. Results. We provide a calibration of the photospheric colors of young pre-main sequence stars as a function of their spectral type in a set of standard broad-band optical and near-infrared filters. The logarithm of the noise on the accretion luminosity normalized to the stellar luminosity is roughly constant and equal to ~−2.3 for targets with masses larger than 1 solar mass, and decreases with decreasing temperatures for lower-mass stars. For stars with masses of ~ 1.5 M⊙ and ages of ~ 1−5 Myr, the chromospheric noise converts to a limit of measurable mass accretion rates of ~ 3 × 10-10M⊙/yr. The limit on the mass accretion rate set by the chromospheric noise is of the order of the lowest measured values of mass accretion rates in Class II objects.
We present VLT/X-shooter observations of a sample of 36 accreting low-mass stellar and substellar objects (YSOs) in the Lupus star-forming region, spanning a range in mass from ~0.03 to ~1.2 M⊙, but ...mostly with 0.1 M⊙<M⋆< 0.5 M⊙. Our aim is twofold: firstly, to analyse the relationship between excess-continuum and line emission accretion diagnostics, and, secondly, to investigate the accretion properties in terms of the physical properties of the central object. The accretion luminosity (Lacc), and in turn the accretion rate (Ṁacc), was derived by modelling the excess emission from the UV to the near-infrared as the continuum emission of a slab of hydrogen. We computed the flux and luminosity (Lline) of many emission lines of H , He , and Ca ii, observed simultaneously in the range from ~330 nm to 2500 nm. The luminosity of all the lines is well correlated with Lacc. We provide empirical relationships between Lacc and the luminosity of 39 emission lines, which have a lower dispersion than relationships previously reported in the literature. Our measurements extend the Paβ and Brγ relationships to Lacc values about two orders of magnitude lower than those reported in previous studies. We confirm that different methodologies of measuring Lacc and Ṁacc yield significantly different results: Hα line profile modelling may underestimate Ṁacc by 0.6 to 0.8 dex with respect to Ṁacc derived from continuum-excess measures. These differences may explain the probably spurious bi-modal relationships between Ṁacc and other YSOs properties reported in the literature. We derived Ṁacc in the range 2 × 10-12–4 × 10-8 M⊙ yr-1 and conclude that Ṁacc ∝ M⋆1.8(±0.2), with a dispersion lower by a factor of about 2 than in previous studies. A number of properties indicate that the physical conditions of the accreting gas are similar over more than 5 orders of magnitude in Ṁacc, confirming previous suggestions that the geometry of the accretion flow controls the rate at which the disc material accretes onto the central star.
In this paper, we present the results of a comprehensive study of six eclipsing binaries whose components are confirmed or suspected Am stars. By combining long-term, high-resolution Catania ...Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter (CAOS) spectroscopy and TESS photometry, we have been able to accurately obtain the orbital parameters of each system as well as the atmospheric parameters of its components. We performed an in-depth chemical analysis and provided chemical abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, and Ba. From the solution of the light and radial curves, we have determined the masses, radii, and temperatures with a good degree of accuracy. We observe apsidal motion in the eccentric system HD 216429, in which the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect is also noted. We inferred the age of our targets by fitting isochrones on the HR diagram and find that both components in each system are properly described with the same isochrone, which reinforces our results. Furthermore, dynamical and evolutionary masses, independently obtained, show an excellent agreement. According to the out-of-eclipse variability shown in their TESS light curves and their position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, we claim that the stars HD 42954 (as δ Sct type) and HD 151604 ( γ Dor) have a pulsating nature. Based on the chemical analysis, we corroborate that four of the systems studied here are formed by Am stars, while in the remaining ones (HD 126031 and HD 216429) only the primary component exhibits a peculiar composition. Additionally, the age distribution found in Am stars supports their suitability as age tracers in stellar populations.
ABSTRACT
ASCC 123 is a little-studied young and dispersed open cluster. Recently, we conducted the first research devoted to it. In this paper, we complement our previous work with Transiting ...Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry for the 55 likely members of the cluster. We pay special attention to seven of these high-probability members, all with FGK spectral types, for which we have high-resolution spectra from our preceding work. By studying the TESS light curves of the cluster members, we determine the rotational period and the amplitude of the rotational modulation for 29 objects. The analysis of the distribution of the periods allows us to estimate a gyrochronological age for ASCC 123 similar to that of the Pleiades, confirming the value obtained in our previous investigation. A young cluster age is also suggested by the distribution of variation amplitudes. In addition, for those stars with spectroscopic data, we calculate the inclination of their rotation axis. These values appear to follow a random distribution, as already observed in young clusters, with no indication of spin alignment. However, our sample is too small to confirm this on more solid statistical grounds. Finally, for these seven stars, we study the level of magnetic activity from the Hα and Ca ii H&K lines. Despite the small number of data points, we find a correlation of the Hα and Ca ii flux with Rossby number. The position of these stars in flux–flux diagrams follows the general trends observed in other active late-type stars.

(LK-) project was initiated to use the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) to make spectroscopic follow-up observations for the targets in ...the field of the
Kepler
mission. The
Kepler
field is divided into 14 subfields that are adapted to the LAMOST circular field with a diameter of 5°. During the regular survey phase of LAMOST, the LK-project took data from 2012 June to 2017 June and covered all 14 subfields at least twice. In particular, we describe in this paper the second Data Release of the LK-project, including all spectra acquired through 2015 May–2017 June together with the first round observations of the LK-project from 2012 June to 2014 September. The LK-project now counts 227,870 spectra of 156,390 stars, among which we have derived atmospheric parameters (
,
T
eff
, and Fe/H) and heliocentric radial velocity for 173,971 spectra of 126,172 stars. These parameters were obtained with the most recent version of the LAMOST Stellar Parameter Pipeline v 2.9.7. Nearly one half, namely 76,283 targets, are observed both by the LAMOST and
Kepler
telescopes. These spectra, establishing a large spectroscopy library, will be useful for the entire astronomical community, particularly for planetary science and stellar variability on
Kepler
targets.
Context. Reconstructing the structure and history of young clusters is pivotal to understanding the mechanisms and timescales of early stellar evolution and planet formation. Recent studies suggest ...that star clusters often exhibit a hierarchical structure, possibly resulting from several star formation episodes occurring sequentially rather than a monolithic cloud collapse. Aims. We aim to explore the structure of the open cluster and star-forming region NGC 2264 (~3 Myr), which is one of the youngest, richest and most accessible star clusters in the local spiral arm of our Galaxy; we link the spatial distribution of cluster members to other stellar properties such as age and evolutionary stage to probe the star formation history within the region. Methods. We combined spectroscopic data obtained as part of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) with multi-wavelength photometric data from the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264 (CSI 2264) campaign. We examined a sample of 655 cluster members, with masses between 0.2 and 1.8 M⊙ and including both disk-bearing and disk-free young stars. We used Teff estimates from GES and g,r,i photometry from CSI 2264 to derive individual extinction and stellar parameters. Results. We find a significant age spread of 4–5 Myr among cluster members. Disk-bearing objects are statistically associated with younger isochronal ages than disk-free sources. The cluster has a hierarchical structure, with two main blocks along its latitudinal extension. The northern half develops around the O-type binary star S Mon; the southern half, close to the tip of the Cone Nebula, contains the most embedded regions of NGC 2264, populated mainly by objects with disks and ongoing accretion. The median ages of objects at different locations within the cluster, and the spatial distribution of disked and non-disked sources, suggest that star formation began in the north of the cluster, over 5 Myr ago, and was ignited in its southern region a few Myr later. Star formation is likely still ongoing in the most embedded regions of the cluster, while the outer regions host a widespread population of more evolved objects; these may be the result of an earlier star formation episode followed by outward migration on timescales of a few Myr. We find a detectable lag between the typical age of disk-bearing objects and that of accreting objects in the inner regions of NGC 2264: the first tend to be older than the second, but younger than disk-free sources at similar locations within the cluster. This supports earlier findings that the characteristic timescales of disk accretion are shorter than those of disk dispersal, and smaller than the average age of NGC 2264 (i.e., ≲3 Myr). At the same time, we note that disks in the north of the cluster tend to be shorter-lived (~2.5 Myr) than elsewhere; this may reflect the impact of massive stars within the region (notably S Mon), that trigger rapid disk dispersal. Conclusions. Our results, consistent with earlier studies on NGC 2264 and other young clusters, support the idea of a star formation process that takes place sequentially over a prolonged span in a given region. A complete understanding of the dynamics of formation and evolution of star clusters requires accurate astrometric and kinematic characterization of its population; significant advance in this field is foreseen in the upcoming years thanks to the ongoing Gaia mission, coupled with extensive ground-based surveys like GES.
Aims. A comprehensive and homogeneous determination of stellar parameters for the stars observed by the Kepler space telescope is necessary for statistical studies of their properties. As a result of ...the large number of stars monitored by Kepler, the largest and more complete databases of stellar parameters published to date are multiband photometric surveys. The LAMOST-Kepler survey, whose spectra are analyzed in the present paper, was the first large spectroscopic project, which started in 2011 and aimed at filling that gap. In this work we present the results of our analysis, which is focused on selecting spectra with emission lines and chromospherically active stars by means of the spectral subtraction of inactive templates. The spectroscopic determination of the atmospheric parameters for a large number of stars is a by-product of our analysis. Methods. We have used a purposely developed version of the code ROTFIT for the determination of the stellar parameters by exploiting a wide and homogeneous collection of real star spectra, namely the Indo US library. We provide a catalog with the atmospheric parameters (T sub(eff), logg, and Fe/H), radial velocity (RV), and an estimate of the projected rotation velocity (v sini). For cool stars (T sub(eff)< or = 6000K), we also calculated the Halpha and Caii-IRT fluxes, which are important proxies of chromospheric activity. Results. We have derived the RV and atmospheric parameters for 61753 spectra of 51385 stars. The average uncertainties, which we estimate from the stars observed more than once, are about 12kms super(-1), 1.3%, 0.05dex, and 0.06dex for RV, T sub(eff), logg, and Fe/H, respectively, although they are larger for the spectra with a very low signal-to-noise ratio. Literature data for a few hundred stars (mainly from high-resolution spectroscopy) were used to peform quality control of our results. The final accuracy of the RV is about 14 kms super(-1). The accuracy of the T sub(eff), logg, and Fe/H measurements is about 3.5%, 0.3dex, and 0.2dex, respectively. However, while the T sub(eff) values are in very good agreement with the literature, we noted some issues with the determination of Fe/H of metal poor stars and the tendency, for logg, to cluster around the values typical for main-sequence and red giant stars. We propose correction relations based on these comparisons and we show that this does not have a significant effect on the determination of the chromospheric fluxes. The RV distribution is asymmetric and shows an excess of stars with negative RVs that are larger at low metallicities. Despite the rather low LAMOST resolution, we were able to identify interesting and peculiar objects, such as stars with variable RV, ultrafast rotators, and emission-line objects. Based on the Halpha and Caii-IRT fluxes, we found 442 chromospherically active stars, one of which is a likely accreting object. The availability of precise rotation periods from the Kepler photometry allowed us to study the dependency of these chromospheric fluxes on the rotation rate for a very large sample of field stars.
The asteroseismic and planetary studies, like all research related to stars, need precise and accurate stellar atmospheric parameters as input. We aim at deriving the effective temperature (T
eff), ...the surface gravity (log g), the metallicity (Fe/H), the projected rotational velocity (v sin i) and the MK type for 169 F-, G-, K- and M-type Kepler targets which were observed spectroscopically from the ground with five different instruments. We use two different spectroscopic methods to analyse 189 high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise spectra acquired for the 169 stars. For 67 stars, the spectroscopic atmospheric parameters are derived for the first time. KIC 9693187 and 11179629 are discovered to be double-lined spectroscopic binary systems. The results obtained for those stars for which independent determinations of the atmospheric parameters are available in the literature are used for a comparative analysis. As a result, we show that for solar-type stars the accuracy of present determinations of atmospheric parameters is ±150 K in T
eff, ±0.15 dex in Fe/H and ±0.3 dex in log g. Finally, we confirm that the curve-of-growth analysis and the method of spectral synthesis yield systematically different atmospheric parameters when they are applied to stars hotter than 6000 K.
