Inspired by the searing story of Margaret Garner, the escaped slave who in 1856 slit her daughter's throat rather than have her forced back into slavery, the essays in this collection focus on ...historical and contemporary examples of slavery and women's resistance to oppression from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first. Each chapter uses Garner's example--the real-life narrative behind Toni Morrison's Beloved and the opera Margaret Garner--as a thematic foundation for an interdisciplinary conversation about gendered resistance in locations including Brazil, Yemen, India, and the United States.
Sisterhood and Solidarity was one of the first volumes, and remains one of the few, to call attention to the importance of workers’ education for women. The ten original essays, written by some of ...the best known labor and working-class history scholars of the time, analyze an educational experiment in which industrial, clerical, and service workers participated with educators, feminists, and social workers. Among the sponsors of these educational programs for women workers were the National Women's Trade Union League, unions of predominantly female workers, independent workers' education organizations, the YWCA, Bryn Mawr College, and the New Deal. Rich in documentary materials from program archives, the chapter authors record how these nontraditional programs encouraged women workers to use their experiences with rural life, factory routine, and strikes to learn union skills and an understanding of the American economic system. Overcoming barriers of race, class, and region, these educational experiments are most notable as a widespread and sustained effort to empower women workers. This reissue, appears at a time when a new generation of educators, activists, and researchers is revaluing workers’ education, driven in part by the global rise of feminism and of female-led and female-majority worker movements. There’s a new appreciation of the need for spaces where workers can recognize their own wisdoms; learn from the considered insights of others, past and present; and together rethink how to change society for the better. The essays in Sisterhood and Solidarity show that the value of workers' education for women was, and continues to be key to ongoing progress.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate compost (and related industry) stability tests given recent large-scale changes to feedstock, processing techniques and compost market requirements. Five stability tests (ORG0020, DR4, Dewar self-heating, oxygen update rate (OUR) and static respiration) were evaluated on composts from ten in-vessel composting sites. Spearman rank correlation coefficients were strong for the ORG0020, OUR and DR4 (both CO2 and O2 measurement), however, OUR results required data extrapolation for highly active compost samples. By comparison the Dewar self-heating and static respiration tests had weaker correlations, in part the result of under reporting highly active, low pH samples. The findings suggest that despite differences in pre-incubation period both dynamic respiration tests (ORG0020 and DR4) are best suited to deal with the wide range of compost stabilities found.

Workers in the contemporary Global South--those nations of Central and Latin America, most of Asia, and Africa--live and work within a model of industrial development that materialized in the red brick mills of the New South. As early as the 1950s, this labor model became the prototype used by U.S. companies as they expanded globally. This development has had increasingly powerful effects on workers and consumers at home and around the world.

A synergistic combination of two next-generation sequencing platforms with a detailed comparative BAC physical contig map provided a cost-effective assembly of the genome sequence of the domestic ...turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Heterozygosity of the sequenced source genome allowed discovery of more than 600,000 high quality single nucleotide variants. Despite this heterozygosity, the current genome assembly (∼1.1 Gb) includes 917 Mb of sequence assigned to specific turkey chromosomes. Annotation identified nearly 16,000 genes, with 15,093 recognized as protein coding and 611 as non-coding RNA genes. Comparative analysis of the turkey, chicken, and zebra finch genomes, and comparing avian to mammalian species, supports the characteristic stability of avian genomes and identifies genes unique to the avian lineage. Clear differences are seen in number and variety of genes of the avian immune system where expansions and novel genes are less frequent than examples of gene loss. The turkey genome sequence provides resources to further understand the evolution of vertebrate genomes and genetic variation underlying economically important quantitative traits in poultry. This integrated approach may be a model for providing both gene and chromosome level assemblies of other species with agricultural, ecological, and evolutionary interest.
In 1915, American Jane Addams, together with 1,300 women from around the world, founded the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, an organization dedicated to fostering understanding, ...preventing war, and laying the foundations for a permanent peace. Addams believed that women in the United States needed to recognize the interdependence of women around the globe in terms of promoting peace, but also regarding economic justice, social activism, and a sense of collective political responsibility. In the twenty-first century, the global perspective adopted by Jane Addams, and those who followed in her footsteps across the years, provides a powerful model for a theoretical paradigm shift in the way women's history in the United States has been written and taught since the 1970s. Eighty years ago, a sizable cohort of activists, scholars and labor organizers argued that the future of the North American labor movement depended on the successful organization of women workers in ...the US South. In 2005, activists, scholars and labor organizers make markedly similar arguments about the important role being played by young women entering ‘maquiladoras’ in the Global South. Divided by time and place, these two groups of workers share the legacy of paying the human costs of industrialization and globalization. In both groups, a significant minority of women responded to the economic and social changes confronting them by turning to activism and fighting back. Collective organization, workers’ education and feminist cooperation were hallmarks of women's activism for social and economic justice in the US South in the mid-20th century. The success of these efforts depended on women locating places where they could develop historical consciousness, find their voices and openly ‘speak their minds’. The experiences of women workers of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s in the US South, provide concrete models for women in the Global South today.
Across time and place, each new generation of southern workers has developed forms of resistance and organization to counter industry’s relentless search for cheap labor and move forward the struggle ...for economic justice. This essay begins with a visit to a Central Asian textile mill where workers in Margilan, Uzbekistan weave cloth on cast-iron “New South” looms from the Carolinas. Transported from one southern space to another, the history of these looms and the diverse groups of workers who have run them tells the story of how the New South paradigm of low wages, anti-unionism, and state support for manufacturers became the archetype for labor relations in twentieth-century America and the model for transforming the Global South into another “New South.” Photographs from the New and Global Souths taken during the century between 1906 and 2006 bring to life the complex historical landscape of the American South and its role in shaping the twenty-first century world in which we live.
