Itaconic acid (IA), a metabolite generated by the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in eukaryotic immune cells, and its derivative dimethyl itaconate (DI) exert antibacterial functions in intracellular ...environments. Previous studies suggested that IA and DI only inhibit bacterial growth in carbon-limited environments; however, whether IA and DI maintain antibacterial activity in carbon-enriched environments remains unknown. Here, IA and DI inhibited the bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 24.02 mM and 39.52 mM, respectively, in a carbon-enriched environment. The reduced bacterial pathogenicity was reflected in cell membrane integrity, motility, biofilm formation, AI-2/luxS, and virulence. Mechanistically, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity and fumaric acid levels decreased in the IA and DI treatments, while isocitrate lyase (ICL) activity was upregulated. Inhibited TCA circulation was also observed through untargeted metabolomics. In addition, energy-related aspartate metabolism and lysine degradation were suppressed. In summary, these results indicated that IA and DI reduced bacterial pathogenicity while exerting antibacterial functions by inhibiting TCA circulation. This study enriches knowledge on the inhibition of bacteria by IA and DI in a carbon-mixed environment, suggesting an alternative method for treating bacterial infections by immune metabolites.

Summary
Corynespora cassiicola is a plant pathogen associated with leaf‐spotting disease. The fungus has been found on diverse substrates: leaves, stems and roots of plants; nematode cysts and human ...skin. It rarely causes human infections. Here we report one case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by C. cassiicola with prominent tissue necrosis in a woman. All of her clinical features pointed towards a genetic linkage. Hence, whole‐exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were performed on this patient. One mutation of CARD9 was detected.
What's already known about this topic?
Cases of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Corynespora cassiicola are rare.
Genetic susceptibility to fungal diseases in otherwise healthy patients has gained interest in recent years.
In particular, various inborn errors of genes have been reported to underlie chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis disease and other cutaneous dermatophytoses.
What does this study add?
We present a female patient with phaeohyphomycosis caused by C. cassiicola with prominent tissue necrosis.
Molecular evidence of mutation in CARD9 is provided for C. cassiicola infection.
A total of 10 lactobacillus strains were isolated from broiler chickens and their probiotic properties including tolerance to gastrointestinal fluids and heat treatment, antimicrobial activity, ...adhesion capacity to intestinal cells, surface hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, antioxidative activity, and immunomodulatory effects on chicken macrophages were evaluated. The Limosilactobacillus reuteri (LR) was the most frequently isolated species, followed by Lactobacillus johnsonii (LJ) and Ligilactobacillus salivarius (LS). All isolates showed good resistance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions and antimicrobial activity against 4 indicator strains including Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis LR 21 exhibited excellent performances on autoaggregation, hydrophobicity and adhesion capacity to Caco-2 intestinal cells. In the meantime, this strain also possessed considerable tolerance to heat treatment, which indicated great potential to be used in the feed industry. However, LJ 20 strain had the highest free radical scavenging activity compared with the other strains. Furthermore, qRT-PCR results revealed that all isolated strains significantly increased the transcriptional levels of proinflammatory genes and tended to induce the M1-type polarization on HD11 macrophages. Particularly, the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) was adopted in our study to compare and select the most promising probiotic candidate based on in vitro evaluation tests.
Purpose
Vitexin, an inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, has anti-tumor effect. However, whether it can enhance the radiotherapy sensitization of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on glioma is ...unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vitexin.
Methods
The nude mice with paw-transplanted glioma were divided into four groups: control group, HBO + radiation group, HBO + vitexin group, and HBO + vitexin + radiation group. The mice of last two groups were daily given vitexin 75 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection. 30 min after administration of vitexin, the HBO-treated mice were daily placed in HBO chamber for 60 min. The radiation-treated mice were given local tumor irradiation once every week during the HBO treatment, and the dose of irradiation was 10 Gy/time. The experimental treatment lasted for 21 days.
Results
Compared with the HBO + radiation group, the tumor volume, tumor weight, and tumor weight coefficient in the HBO + vitexin + radiation group were lower (
p
< 0.05). Importantly, the contents of reduced glutathione and glutathione peroxidase as well as expressions of HIF-1α, vascular endothelial growth factor, glucose transporter (GLUT)-1, and GLUT-3 proteins in tumor tissues were also lower in the HBO + vitexin + radiation group than in the HBO + radiation group (
p
< 0.01).
Conclusions
Vitexin can cooperate with HBO to sensitize the glioma radiotherapy, and its mechanisms may be correlated to the inhibition of HIF-1α protein expression and subsequent decrements of its downstream protein expressions, which finally cause the reduction of antioxidant capacity.
Summary
Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is a rare, autosomal dominant dermatosis, characterized by a mixture of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules on the dorsa of the hands and ...feet. The DSH locus has been mapped to chromosome 1q21, and in 2003, pathogenic mutations were identified in the ADAR1 (adenosine deaminase acting on RNA1) gene. In this study, we performed mutation detection of the ADAR1 gene in two Chinese families with DSH. PCR and direct sequencing of the ADAR1 gene were used to identify and confirm the mutations in the two families. Furthermore, we analysed the RNA transcripts by reverse transcriptase (RT)‐PCR. Two aberrant splice products were confirmed with RT‐PCR and DNA direct sequence analysis. These novel findings further extend our understanding of the role of ADAR1 in DSH.
Extreme-ultraviolet pulses of attosecond duration carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) can be produced by spectrally filtering vortex high harmonics generated in a gas medium. Here we reveal that ...fractional high harmonics (FHHs) with non-integer OAM generated by a short duration Laguerre-Gaussian laser beam are origins for the change of helical attosecond pulse train (APT) with azimuthal angle. We show that these harmonics have gap and minimum structures in the annular intensity profile and discontinue phase distribution along azimuthal angle. And each FHH can be expressed as a superposition of OAM modes with integer topological charges. Features of FHH can be identified by coherently combining selected OAM modes. We also uncover that these features are formed after FHH is propagated in gas medium and in vacuum. We finally demonstrate that the generation of FHHs and the dependence of helical APTs on azimuthal angle are changed by varying the macroscopic condition.

Organoclays were prepared by cationic exchange of montmorillonite (MMT) with three commercial surfactants: octadecylamine (ODA), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB), benzalkonium chloride ...(BAC), and an in-house synthesized surfactant, vinylbenzylalkyldimethylammonium chloride (VDAC). The swelling behaviors of organoclays in styrene were compared by wettability and rheology measurements. VDAC-MMT had the slowest capillary rise rate in styrene. The Washburn equation was found not suitable for the swellable organoclay powders. All organoclay–styrene and organoclay–toluene mixtures demonstrated yield stress. However, VDAC-MMT–styrene and VDAC-MMT–toluene mixtures showed significant higher yield stresses than the other organoclay mixtures. The wettability and rheology measurements indicate that VDAC-MMT bearing a styryl functional group has the strongest interaction with styrene monomer and toluene. In order to further evaluate the extent of swelling and the microstructure, polystyrene (PS)–clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that ODA and HTAB-MMT led to intercalated PS–clay nanocomposites, while VDAC-MMT formed exfoliated PS–clay nanocomposites.
Multipacting is a phenomenon in which electrons grow sharply under certain conditions in a RF structure. It may lead to the breakdown or even damage to the equipment. Therefore, it is very important ...to calculate the Multipacting range in the RF equipment design. Since the phenomenon is too complicated to use the formula to fully predict it, numerical simulation is employed. There are many computer codes (such as Track3P, MultiPac, CST PS, etc.) used to simulate the phenomenon, but most of them are not commercial. In this paper, theories used in coaxial line for predicting multipacting are introduced; the CST PS is chosen to simulate the multipacting of coaxial coupler for BNCT DTL; finally, methods of suppressing multipacting are discussed.
