Solitary stars that wander too close to their galactic centres can become tidally disrupted, if the tidal forces due to the supermassive black hole residing there overcome the self-gravity of the ...star. If the star is only partially disrupted, so that a fraction survives as a self-bound object, this remaining core will experience a net gain in specific orbital energy, which translates into a velocity ‘kick’ of up to ∼103 km s−1. In this paper, we present the result of smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of such partial disruptions, and analyse the velocity kick imparted on the surviving core. We compare γ = 5/3 and γ = 4/3 polytropes disrupted in both a Newtonian potential, and a generalized potential that reproduces most relativistic effects around a Schwarzschild black hole either exactly or to excellent precision. For the Newtonian case, we confirm the results of previous studies that the kick velocity of the surviving core is virtually independent of the ratio of the black hole to stellar mass, and is a function of the impact parameter β alone, reaching at most the escape velocity of the original star. For a given β, relativistic effects become increasingly important for larger black hole masses. In particular, we find that the kick velocity increases with the black hole mass, making larger kicks more common than in the Newtonian case, as low-β encounters are statistically more likely than high-β encounters. The analysis of the tidal tensor for the generalized potential shows that our results are robust lower limits on the true relativistic kick velocities, and are generally in very good agreement with the exact results.
Context. The origin of the blue supergiant (BSG) progenitor of Supernova (SN) 1987A has long been debated, along with the role that its sub-solar metallicity played. We now have a sample of SN ...1987A-like events that arise from the rare core collapse (CC) of massive (~20 M⊙) and compact (≲100 R⊙) BSGs. Aims. The metallicity of the explosion sites of the known BSG SNe is investigated, as well as the association of BSG SNe to star-forming regions. Methods. Both indirect and direct metallicity measurements of 13 BSG SN host galaxies are presented, and compared to those of other CC SN types. Indirect measurements are based on the known luminosity-metallicity relation and on published metallicity gradients of spiral galaxies. In order to provide direct metallicity measurements based on strong line diagnostics, we obtained spectra of each BSG SN host galaxy both at the exact SN explosion sites and at the positions of other H ii regions. We also observed these hosts with narrow Hα and broad R-band filters in order to produce continuum-subtracted Hα images. This allows us to measure the degree of association between BSG SNe and star-forming regions, and to compare it to that of other SN types. Results. BSG SNe are found to explode either in low-luminosity galaxies or at large distances from the nuclei of luminous hosts. Therefore, their indirectly measured metallicities are typically lower than those of SNe IIP and Ibc. This result is confirmed by the direct metallicity estimates, which show slightly sub-solar oxygen abundances (12 + log (O/H) ~ 8.3–8.4 dex) for the local environments of BSG SNe, similar to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), where SN 1987A exploded. However, we also note that two objects of our sample (SNe 1998A and 2004em) were found at near solar metallicity. SNe IIb have a metallicity distribution similar to that of our BSG SNe. Finally, we find that the degree of association to star-forming regions is similar among BSG SNe, SNe IIP and IIn. Conclusions. Our results suggest that LMC metal abundances play a role in the formation of some 1987A-like SNe. This would naturally fit in a single star scenario for the progenitors. However, the existence of two events at nearly solar metallicity suggests that also other channels, e.g. binarity, contribute to produce BSG SNe.
ABSTRACT OJ 287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts that are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical ...outburst in 2015 December. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, . The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2% accuracy level, and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with 10% accuracy during the present decade.
The William Herschel Telescope Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE) is a new, massively multiplexing spectrograph that allows us to collect about one thousand spectra over a 3 square degree field ...in one observation. The WEAVE Stellar Population Survey (WEAVE-StePS) in the next 5 years will exploit this new instrument to obtain high-S/N spectra for a magnitude-limited ($I_ AB = 20.5$) sample of sim 25 000 galaxies at moderate redshifts ($ z 0.3$), providing insights into galaxy evolution in this as yet unexplored redshift range. We aim to test novel techniques for retrieving the key physical parameters of galaxies from WEAVE-StePS spectra using both photometric and spectroscopic (spectral indices) information for a range of noise levels and redshift values. We simulated $ 000 galaxy spectra assuming star formation histories with an exponentially declining star formation rate, covering a wide range of ages, stellar metallicities, specific star formation rates (sSFRs), and dust extinction values. We considered three redshifts (i.e. $z=0.3, 0.55,$ and $0.7$), covering the redshift range that WEAVE-StePS will observe. We then evaluated the ability of the random forest and K-nearest neighbour algorithms to correctly predict the average age, metallicity, sSFR, dust attenuation, and time since the bulk of formation, assuming no measurement errors. We also checked how much the predictive ability deteriorates for different noise levels, with I,obs =10$, 20, and 30, and at different redshifts. Finally, the retrieved sSFR was used to classify galaxies as part of the blue cloud, green valley, or red sequence. We find that both the random forest and K-nearest neighbour algorithms accurately estimate the mass-weighted ages, u-band-weighted ages, and metallicities with low bias. The dispersion varies from 0.08--0.16$\,$dex for age and 0.11--0.25$\,$dex for metallicity, depending on the redshift and noise level. For dust attenuation, we find a similarly low bias and dispersion. For the sSFR, we find a very good constraining power for star-forming galaxies, $ where the bias is $ 0.01\,$dex and the dispersion is $ 0.10\,$dex. However, for more quiescent galaxies, with $ we find a higher bias, ranging from 0.61 to 0.86$\,$dex, and a higher dispersion, $ 0.4\,$dex, depending on the noise level and redshift. In general, we find that the random forest algorithm outperforms the K-nearest neighbours. Finally, we find that the classification of galaxies as members of the green valley is successful across the different redshifts and S/Ns. We demonstrate that machine learning algorithms can accurately estimate the physical parameters of simulated galaxies for a WEAVE-StePS-like dataset, even at relatively low S/N$_ I,obs = 10$ per spectra with available ancillary photometric information. A more traditional approach, Bayesian inference, yields comparable results. The main advantage of using a machine learning algorithm is that, once trained, it requires considerably less time than other methods.
High-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) offer several advantages when studying the distant Universe, providing unique information about the structure and properties of the galaxies in which they ...exploded. Spectroscopic identification with large ground-based telescopes has improved our knowledge of this kind of distant events. We present the multi-wavelength analysis of the high-z Swift GRB GRB 140515A (z = 6.327). The best estimate of the neutral hydrogen fraction of the intergalactic medium towards the burst is x sub(HI) < or = 0.002. The spectral absorption lines detected for this event are the weakest lines ever observed in GRB afterglows, suggesting that GRB 140515A exploded in a very low-density environment. Its circum-burst medium is characterised by an average extinction (A sub(V) ~ 0.1) that seems to be typical of z > or = 6 events. The observed multi-band light curves are explained either with a very hard injected spectrum (p = 1.7) or with a multi-component emission (p = 2.1). In the second case a long-lasting central engine activity is needed in order to explain the late time X-ray emission. The possible origin of GRB 140515A in a Pop III (or in a Pop II star with a local environment enriched by Pop III) massive star is unlikely.

•Effect of different ion beam fluences on zinc ferrite thin films structure was investigated.•First reported results on zinc ferrite thin films irradiated with slow highly charged ...ions.•Increased magnetization was observed for samples irradiated even at low fluence.•Measurements of blocking temperature of thin films before and after irradiation.
The effects of 90keV neon beam irradiation on the structure and magnetic properties of zinc ferrite thin films have been investigated through several methods, namely, X-ray diffraction technique, Vibrating Sample and SQUID magnetometers. Beforehand, the pristine have also been characterized using profilometry and microscopy techniques. In particular single-phase formation of the thin films deposited on monocrystalline Si (111) substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique was confirmed. Crystal lattice, coercivity, saturation magnetization have been studied for the first time, as a function of ion penetration depth and irradiation fluence. The chemical composition and the crystallinity of the films are not affected with the ion impact acting as a mechanical stress relief. On the contrary, both magnetization and coercivity are sensitive to Neq+ ion irradiation and exhibit different behaviours depending on the ion fluence range.

We present the first investigation on the effect of highly charged ion bombardment on a manganese arsenide thin film. The MnAs films, 150nm thick, are irradiated with 90keV Ne9+ions with a fluence ...varying from 1.6×1012 to 1.6×1015ions/cm2. The structural and magnetic properties of the film after irradiation are investigated using different techniques, namely, X-ray diffraction and magnetic force microscope. Preliminary results are presented. From the study of the lattice spacing, we measure a change on the film structure that depends on the fluence, similarly to previous studies with other materials. On the other hand, investigations on the surface show a strong modification of its magnetic properties.
