First, we identify the period before traductologie and then the issues of a historiography of translation studies, before grasping the debates around the term translation studies in the 1970s, in ...particular the motivations of the various equivalents suggested for Translation Studies (TS). In a second step, we refer to the precursors (1950s-1960s) and the pioneers (1980s and 1990s) of this French-language translation studies: what names emerge from this recent period and how have they advanced the reflection? Then we turn our attention to the problem of the translation of TS into French and translation studies into English. Finally, in order to define the socio-institutional dimension of the discipline, we study the parameters and factors that have favored and still favor this French-speaking translation studies, such as associations, training places and programs, recruitment bodies, as well as certain channels of dissemination (doctoral schools, research teams, journals, collections). Our final question focuses on the direct and indirect influences of French speaking researchers in the humanities and social sciences on TS and translation studies.

Yesterday, translation was invisible, denied – as a need, as an activity, as a profession, and as a ...discipline. Within three decades, a new work environment is shaking up the translators’ world. New types of translators are emerging. The balance between supply and demand is changing. However, we still need adequate tools and methods to investigate the new hierarchy which has become established between translators, between different kinds of job markets.
The starting point of the article is a simple question: When a literary translator, a subtitler, a localizer of Websites, an advertising agency adapting an international campaign, a conference ...interpreter are speaking of text, do they refer to the same concept and do they indirectly perceive translation in the same way? The different conceptions and makings of text shape different translation strategies. Conversely, can we believe that the various current modes of translating, based on different types of texts, could help us setting up the concept of text in another way? In the first part, the article focuses on the paradigms which are competing today in Translation Studies. It then questions the media history of translation and its impact on the concept of text. In its third part, it tries to link Translation Studies and some issues of Text Linguistics. Finally, with the coming (or the return?) of the multimodal text, nothing can prevent to question the validity of the dominant concept of text as it has been defined in the 1970s thanks to several criteria of textuality. Does the translators’ work disturb, call to challenge the historicized concept of text? The changes of paradigms in Translation Studies, as they appear today, do not imply a clear-cut answer.

However, we need adequate tools and methods to investigate the new hierarchy which has become established between translators, between different kinds of job markets. Journalists are like translators confronted with computerization and an influx of amateurs. With all those rapid changes, it is time to consider an economic turn in Translation Studies and also the implications for training.
