Current knowledge of the evolution of the postcranial skeleton in the genusHomois hampered by a geographically and chronologically scattered fossil record. Here we present a complete characterization ...of the postcranium of the middle Pleistocene paleodeme from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) and its paleobiological implications. The SH hominins show the following: (i) wide bodies, a plesiomorphic character in the genus Homo inherited fromtheir early hominin ancestors; (ii) statures that can be found in modern human middle-latitude populations that first appeared 1.6–1.5 Mya; and (iii) large femoral heads in some individuals, a trait that first appeared during the middle Pleistocene in Africa and Europe. The intrapopulational size variation in SH shows that the level of dimorphism was similar to modern humans (MH), but the SH hominins were less encephalized than Neandertals. SH shares many postcranial anatomical features with Neandertals. Although most of these features appear to be either plesiomorphic retentions or are of uncertain phylogenetic polarity, a few represent Neandertal apomorphies. Nevertheless, the full suite of Neandertal-derived features is not yet present in the SH population. The postcranial evidence is consistent with the hypothesis based on the cranial morphology that the SH hominins are a sister group to the later Neandertals. Comparison of the SH postcranial skeleton to other hominins suggests that the evolution of the postcranium occurred in a mosaic mode, both at a general and at a detailed level.
This paper deals with a new approach for using olive tree pruning biomass as raw material for ethanol and other chemical production. This process includes a water extraction step, followed by a high ...solids loading dilute phosphoric acid pretreatment and an ethanologenic Escherichia coli fermentation for the conversion of all of the sugars released. Results show that the operational conditions leading to the maximal hemicelullosic sugar recovery in the liquid fraction (near 70%) are 170 °C and 0.5% (w/v) phosphoric acid concentration. The fermentation of the mixed sugars found in the detoxified prehydrolysates by ethanologenic E. coli MS04 led to an ethanol concentration of 23 g/L and an ethanol yield of 0.46 g of ethanol/g of sugars consumed. When the ethanol production from the pretreated solids after enzymatic hydrolysis is also taken into account, 13.2 g of ethanol/100 g of original material was obtained. The production of other interesting compounds is also considered.
Background
The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) in haematological patients (HP) has not been comprehensively reported.
Methods
We analysed 39 patients with SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and ...haematological malignancies. Clinical characteristics and outcomes were compared to a matched control group of 53 non‐cancer patients with COVID‐19. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to assess the risk factors associated with poor outcome.
Results
The most frequent haematological diseases were lymphoma (30%) and multiple myeloma (30%). Eighty‐seven % HP developed moderate or severe disease. Patients with haematological malignancies had a significantly higher mortality rate compared to non‐cancer patients (35.9% vs 13.2%; P = .003 (odds ratio 6.652). The worst outcome was observed in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia patients. Only age >70 years and C reactive protein >10 mg/dl at admission were associated with higher risk of death (odds ratio 34.86, P = .003 and 13.56,P = .03). Persistent viral sheddind was detected in 5 HP. Active chemotherapy, viral load at diagnosis and COVID‐19 therapy were not predictors of outcome.
Conclusion
Mortality of COVID‐19 is significantly higher in patients with haematological malignancies compared to non‐cancer patients. The impact of persistent viral shedding must be considered in order to re‐start therapies and maintain infectious control measures.
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines in preventing infection and hospitalization among healthcare workers (HCWs) in the Valencian Community (Spain), considering ...vaccination timing, dose number, and predominant variant.
A test-negative case-control design estimated vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic disease and hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2. HCWs who underwent PCR or antigen testing for SARS-CoV-2 from January 2021 to March 2022 were included. Cases had a positive diagnostic test, while controls had negative tests. Adjusted vaccine effectiveness (aVE) was calculated using the formula: aVE = (1 − Odds ratio) × 100.
During the Delta variant’s predominance, aVE against infection within 12–120 days post-second dose was 64.8 % (BNT162b2) and 59.4 % (mRNA-1273), declining to 21.2 % and 42.2 %, respectively, after 120 days. For the Omicron variant, aVE within 12–120 days post-second dose was 61.1 % (BNT162b2) and 85.1 % (mRNA-1273), decreasing to 36.7 % and 24.9 %, respectively, after 120 days. After a booster dose of mRNA-1273, aVE was 64.0 % (BNT162b2 recipients) and 65.9 % (initial mRNA-1273 recipients). Regardless of variant, aVE for hospitalization prevention after 2 doses was 87.0 % (BNT162b2) and 89.0 % (mRNA-1273).
The administration of two doses of Moderna-mRNA-1273 against SARS-CoV-2 in HCWs proved to be highly effective in preventing infections and hospitalizations in the first 120 days after the second dose during the predominance of the Omicron variant. The decline in VE after 120 days since the administration of the second dose was significantly restored by the booster dose administration. This increase in VE was greater for the Pfizer vaccine. COVID-19 hospitalization prevention remained stable with both mRNA vaccines throughout the study period.
The study of patterned magnetic elements that can sustain more than one bit of the information is an important research line for developing new routes in magnetic storage and magnetic logic devices. ...Previous Monte Carlo studies of T-shaped magnetic nanostructures revealed the equilibrium and evolution of magnetic states that could be found as a result of the strong configurational anisotropy of these systems. In this work, for the first time, such behavior of T-shaped magnetic nanostructures is experimentally studied. In particular, T-shaped Co nanostructures have been produced by electron beam lithography using a single step lift-off process over Si substrates. The existence of four magnetic stable states has been proven by Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) and the analysis was complemented by Micromagnetic Simulations. The results confirmed that even for what can be considered large structures, with μm sizes, such four stable magnetic states can be achieved, and therefore two magnetic bits of information can be stored. We also addressed how to write and read those bits.
Leishmaniasis, considered by the World Health Organization as one of the most important tropical diseases, is endemic in the Mediterranean Basin. The aim of this study was to evaluate epidemiological ...and clinical characteristics of cutaneous (CL) and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) in La Fe University Hospital, Valencia, Spain. The particular focus was on diagnosis techniques and clinical differences according to the immunological status of the patients.
An eleven-year retrospective observational study of CL and MCL episodes at the hospital was performed. Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic variables of each case, together with the microbiological and anatomopathological diagnosis, were analyzed.
A total of 42 patients were included, 30 of them were male and 28 were immunocompetent. Most of the cases (36/42) were diagnosed in the last 5 years (2013-2017). The incidence of CL and MCL increased from 3.6/100,000 (2006-2012) to 13.58/100,000 (2013-2017). The majority of the patients (37/42) exhibited CL, in 30 cases as single lesions (30/37). Ulcerative lesions were more common in immunosuppressed patients (13/14) than in immunocompetent patients (20/28), (P = 0.2302). The length of lesion presence before diagnosis was 7.36 ± 6.72 months in immunocompetent patients and 8.79 ± 6.9 months in immunosuppressed patients (P = 0.1863). Leishmania DNA detection (92.3%) was the most sensitive diagnostic technique followed by Giemsa stain (65%) and histopathological examination (53.8%). Twelve patients (12/42) had close contact with dogs or were living near to kennels, and 10 of them did not present underlying conditions. Intralesional glucantime (21/42) and liposomal amphotericin B (7/42) were the most common treatments administered in monotherapy. All patients evolved successfully and no relapse was reported.
Some interesting clinical and epidemiological differences were found in our series between immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. Future studies can take these results further especially by studying patients with biological therapy. Skin biopsies combining NAAT with histological techniques are the most productive techniques for CL or MCL diagnosis.

Ventriculoscopic neuronavigation has been described in several articles. However, there are different ventriculoscopes and navigation systems. Due to these different combinations, it is difficult to ...find detailed neuronavigation protocols. We describe, step-by-step, a simple method to navigate both the trajectory until reaching the ventricular system, as well as the intraventricular work.
We use a rigid ventriculoscope (LOTTA, KarlStorz) with an electromagnetic stylet (S8-StealthSystem, Medtronic). The protocol is based on a modified or 3-dimensionally printed trocar for navigating the extraventricular step and on a modified pediatric nasogastric tube for the intraventricular navigation.
This protocol can be set up in less than 10 minutes. The extraventricular part is navigated by introducing the electromagnetic stylet inside the modified or 3-dimensionally printed trocar. Intraventricular navigation is done by combining a modified pediatric nasogastric tube with the electromagnetic stylet inside the endoscope's working channel. The most critical point is to obtain a blunt-bloodless ventriculostomy while achieving perfect alignment of all targeted structures via pure straight trajectories.
This protocol is easy-to-set-up, avoids head rigid-fixation and bulky optical-based attachments to the ventriculoscope, and allows continuous navigation of both parts of the surgery. Since we have implemented this protocol, we have noticed a significant enhancement in both simple and complex ventriculoscopic procedures because the surgery is dramatically simplified.
The present work reports the fabrication via FFF-3D printing of 3- and 8-YSZ electrolytes, which are considered the current state-of-the-art of electrolyte materials for high temperature fuel cells ...(i.e., SOFCs), using filaments with ceramic loadings in the 65 to 75 wt% range. Filaments, green bodies and sintered specimens have been produced and fully characterised using thermal, structural, morphological, rheological and electrochemical techniques. The 3D printed electrolytes exhibit chemical stability under the debinding and sintering conditions, without significant microstructural changes when compared to conventional press and sinter processing and very high relative densities, compatible with SOFC operation, i.e. > 95%. The conductivity of the 3D printed electrolytes was 0.05 and ≈ 0.1 S/cm at 1000 °C, for 3- and 8-YSZ respectively, which is very close to the values typically reported for conventionally processed zirconia electrolytes. These results confirm the potential application of FFF-3D printing technology towards the production of a new generation of electrochemical devices for energy production, such as SOFCs, with larger volumetric and surface energy densities and without their current geometrical limitations.
Nanostructured noble metals are of great interest because of their tunable optical and electronic properties. However, the green synthesis of anisotropic nanostructures with a defined geometry by the ...systematic nanoassembly of particles into specific shape, size, and crystallographic facets still faces major challenges. The present work aimed to establish an environmentally friendly methodology for synthesizing gold-based anisotropic nanostructures using starch-capped bimetallic silver/gold nanoparticles as seeds and hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent.
Au-based anisotropic nanostructures were synthesized using starch-capped bimetallic Ag/Au nanoparticles as seeds under mild conditions.
