There is growing evidence that there is an increased use of Marijuana (cannabis) during the perinatal period. This review summarizes pertinent legislation (past and present) and the physiology and ...pathophysiology of cannabis use during pregnancy. The literature which involves issues concerning cannabis and pregnancy is expanding but at present has many gaps and unanswered questions. The effects on the newborn are significant and treatment recommendations including breastfeeding are presented. Also included is a description of developmental delay during the first 2 years of life in infants exposed to prenatal marijuana. In addition, this commentary discusses the increase use of the newer "synthetic" cannabinoids which have greater psychotropic activity and can cause significant harm.
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a global multi-host pathogen that is capable of causing considerable mortality in a range of species and is important in the field of conservation medicine. Nepal's ...Chitwan National Park is a protected area providing habitat for 32% of the country's mammal species including endangered carnivores such as the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) that are susceptible to CDV. The presence of free-roaming dogs around protected areas could represent a source of infectious disease for transmission to local wildlife. A cross-sectional demographic and canine distemper virus seroprevalence study of 100 free-roaming dogs from the Chitwan National Park buffer zone and surrounding area was conducted in November 2019. The overall seroprevalence indicating past exposure to canine distemper virus was 80.0% (95% CI: 70.8-87.3). Of the host variables assessed, sex and age were positively associated with seroprevalence at the univariable level, with male dogs demonstrating lower seroprevalence than females (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.11-0.91) and adult dogs demonstrating higher seroprevalence than juveniles (OR = 13.94, 95% CI: 1.37-142.29). The effect of sex was no longer significant at the multivariable level, but the direction of the effect remained the same. The effect of age remained significant after multivariable analysis (OR = 9.00, 95% CI: 1.03-192.75). No spatial associations were demonstrated in relation to the buffer zone area or boundary of Chitwan National Park. Free-roaming dog neutering and vaccination programmes can provide a useful baseline for future CDV studies in the region, and a proxy to monitor disease threats to susceptible wildlife.
The calibration of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) sub-systems provides additional information, such as sub-systems performance during operation, and circumvents compensation errors ...often reported in the literature for the calibration of building energy use. However, only limited details are provided in the literature to proceed with such calibration approach. In this paper, an off line automated calibration approach of EnergyPlus HVAC sub-system models was proposed and tested. The proposed approach consisted of reducing the number of parameters to be adjusted using sensitivity analysis and meta-heuristic optimization for sequential calibrations of HVAC sub-system components. The proposed calibration approach used available trend data and can be adapted to different equipment configurations. The proposed calibration approach was then used in a trial application on a real HVAC system. The results of the trial application showed that a calibrated fan power demand under the ASHRAE Guideline 14-2014 was obtained using the calculated airflow rate from fan laws and the measured mixed and supply air temperatures. The proposed approach provided an interesting perspective for the calibration of highly detailed building energy model (BEM) and went hand in hand with the integration of BEM tools into the operation phase of the building life.
In this paper, the indoor environment of a small-scale high-density controlled environment agriculture (CEA-HD) space was simulated using computational fluid dynamics. Spatial modelling of the indoor ...environment considering the influential phenomena (e.g. transpiration and photosynthesis) over the indoor temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, and airflow velocity is still challenging. These indoor environment conditions were computed for a 3D model of a CEA-HD experimental space while simultaneously modelling crop airflow impingement, transpiration and photosynthesis. The crops being grown were represented in the model as porous media zones and their exchanges with the indoor air were modelled using user defined functions. The air distribution parameters and configuration were optimized using a simplified 2D model to overcome the steep computational time, and associated cost, of 3D simulation. The objective function of the optimization problem relied on a correlation analysis of the simulation output. The optimization of the 2D model yielded an airfoil configuration that reduced the mean airflow speed and relative humidity variations between the cultivation tiers while achieving higher mean velocities (≈1.9 m·s−1) at a lower inlet speed (8 m·s−1). The proposed modelling and optimization approach is a small step forward towards model-based design and operation of CEA-HD production spaces.

The contraction of the global tiger population over the last 100 years into small, often isolated subpopulations has made them increasingly vulnerable to the impact of disease. Despite this, the ...health of wild tigers continues to be insufficiently funded and explored. For example, canine distemper virus (CDV), has been associated with localized declines and increased risk of extinction, and yet has received little research attention in most tiger range countries. The emergence of new pathogenic threats has posed fresh challenges, including African swine fever virus (ASFV), which has the potential to devastate wild boar populations, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) with implications for tiger conservation that remain unknown. The objective of this review is to synthesize current research on the health of tigers and their prey that impacts the conservation of tigers in the wild. Published sources are interpreted based on three mechanisms through which disease can affect the viability of tiger populations: (1) by reducing the survival of adult tigers, (2) by reducing breeding productivity, and (3) by reducing the carrying capacity of tiger habitat through decreased prey abundance. Examples of CDV, SARS-CoV2, carnivore protoparvovirus 1 and ASFV are used to illustrate these processes and inform discussion of research and mitigation priorities.
Canine distemper virus (CDV) has recently emerged as an extinction threat for the endangered Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). CDV is vaccine-preventable, and control strategies could require ...vaccination of domestic dogs and/or wildlife populations. However, vaccination of endangered wildlife remains controversial, which has led to a focus on interventions in domestic dogs, often assumed to be the source of infection. Effective decision making requires an understanding of the true reservoir dynamics, which poses substantial challenges in remote areas with diverse host communities. We carried out serological, demographic, and phylogenetic studies of dog and wildlife populations in the Russian Far East to show that a number of wildlife species are more important than dogs, both in maintaining CDV and as sources of infection for tigers. Critically, therefore, because CDV circulates among multiple wildlife sources, dog vaccination alone would not be effective at protecting tigers. We show, however, that low-coverage vaccination of tigers themselves is feasible and would produce substantive reductions in extinction risks. Vaccination of endangered wildlife provides a valuable component of conservation strategies for endangered species.
Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphomas (CTCL) are rare, but potentially devastating malignancies, whose pathogenesis remains poorly elucidated. Unfortunately, currently it is not possible to predict based on the ...available criteria in which patients the cancer will progress and which patients will experience an indolent disease course. Furthermore, at early stages this malignancy often masquerades as psoriasis, chronic eczema or other benign inflammatory dermatoses. As a result, it takes on average 6 y to diagnose this lymphoma since its initial presentation. In this study, we performed transcription expression profiling using TruSeq targeted RNA gene expression on 181 fresh and formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) skin samples from CTCL patients and patients affected by benign inflammatory dermatoses that often mimic CTCL clinically and on histology (e.g., psoriasis, chronic eczema, etc.) We also analyzed multiple longitudinal biopsies that were obtained from the same patients over time. Our results underscore significant molecular heterogeneity with respect to gene expression between different patients and even within the same patients over time. Our study also confirmed TOX, FYB, LEF1, CCR4, ITK, EED, POU2AF, IL26, STAT5, BLK, GTSF1 and PSORS1C2 genes as being differentially expressed between CTCL and benign skin biopsies. In addition, we found that differential expression for a subset of these markers (e.g., TOX, FYB, GTSF1 and CCR4) may be useful in prognosticating this disease. This research, combined with other molecular analyses, prepares the foundation for the development of personalized molecular approach toward diagnosis and management of CTCL.
