Objective:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D levels and hemostatic factors like tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI).
Methods:
Patients who had ...25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels measured were included. Coagulation and hemostatic parameters were evaluated. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on 25(OH)D3 levels as group 1 (25(OH)D3 < 10 ng/mL, n = 25), group 2 (25(OH)D3 = 10-19.9 ng/mL, n = 22), and group 3 (25(OH)D3 ≥ 20 ng/mL, n = 28).
Results:
A total of 75 patients with a mean age of 39 (range 18-57) years were included in the study. Prothrombin time was longer in group 3 than in group 2 (P = .043). The TFPI levels were higher in group 3 than in the other groups (P < .001). There was a strong positive correlation between 25(OH)D3 and TFPI levels (r = .47, P < .001).
Conclusion:
Further studies are needed for evaluation of the role of TFPI in hemostasis and thrombotic process in patients with vitamin D deficiency.
Aim. This study aimed to compare thyroid functions, thyroid autoantibodies, and the existence of nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) according to vitamin D level. Materials and Methods. The study ...included age- and BMI-matched healthy volunteers with and without vitamin D deficiency. In addition, the nonthyroidal illness syndrome status was evaluated. Results. Anti-TPO positivity was significantly more common in those with severe and moderate vitamin D deficiency, as compared to those with a normal 25(OH)D level. Furthermore, TSH levels were significantly lower in those with severe and moderate vitamin D deficiency than in those with a normal 25(OH)D level. In addition, there was a significant weak inverse correlation between anti-TPO positivity and the 25(OH)D level and a positive correlation between the TSH level and 25(OH)D level. Only 1 thyroid function test result was compatible with NTIS among the participants with moderate vitamin D deficiency; therefore the difference was not significant. Conclusions. The prevalence of thyroid autoantibody positivity was higher in those with severe and moderate vitamin D deficiency than in those with a normal 25(OH)D level. Additional large-scale studies must be conducted to determine if vitamin D deficiency plays a causal role in the pathogenesis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and NTIS.
Sample classification and registration have been recognized as important and time-consuming processes in laboratories. There is increasing pressure on laboratories to automate processes due to ...intense workload and reduce manual procedures and errors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the positive effects of an automatic tube registration and sorting system on specimen processing.
An automatic tube registration and sorting system (HCTS2000 MK2, m-u-t AG, Wedel, Germany) was evaluated. Turnaround time (TAT), rate of sample rejection and unrealized tests were examined 12 months pre- and post-implementation of the automatic tube sorting and registration system.
The mean TAT of routine chemistry immunoassay, complete blood cell count (CBC) and coagulation samples were significantly improved (
<0.001). The number of rejected samples and unrealized tests was insignificantly decreased post-implementation of the system (0.4% to 0.2% and 4.5% to 1.4%, respectively) (
>0.05).
By reducing delays and errors in the preanalytical processing and sorting of samples, significant improvements in specimen processing were observed after implementation of the system. These results suggest that an automatic tube registration and sorting system may also be used to improve specimen processing in a higher-volume core laboratory.

The aim of ...this study was to evaluate and compare the serum H-FABP levels and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) between patients with prediabetes and control subjects.
We measured serum H-FABP levels in 58 prediabetic patients, 29 with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and 29 with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 28 age-, sex- and body mass index-matched control subjects using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and in order to measure CIMT, all participants underwent high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography.
Serum H-FABP levels were significantly elevated in pre-diabetic patients when compared with that of control subjects (IFG: 32.5 ± 34.2 ng/dL, IGT: 45.4 ± 45.8 ng/dL, control: 16.8 ± 14.9 ng/dL; p = 0.011). The difference in means of H-FABP levels between patients with IGT or IFG and control subjects was significant (p = 0.010 and p = 0.009, respectively). CIMT was higher in the pre-diabetic groups compared with the control group (IFG: 0.6 ± 0.1, IGT: 0.6 ± 0.1, control: 0.5 ± 0.1; p < 0.001), and H-FABP level was positively correlated with CIMT (p < 0.001, rho = 0.626).
Our results indicate that patients with pre-diabetes are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition, serum H-FABP levels could represent a useful marker for myocardial performance in patients with IFG and IGT.
Background Alterations of thyroid hormones in colorectal surgery were previously studied. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of triiodothyronine (T3) supplementation on ...anastomotic healing after segmental colectomy. Material and Methods Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into sham ( n = 6), control ( n = 12), and experimental ( n = 12) groups. Sham group rats were immediately sacrificed after segmental colonic resection. Control and experimental group rats underwent resection and anastomosis. Experimental group rats received a single dose of T3 (400 μg/100 g) in postoperative day 1. Half of both control and experimental group rats were sacrificed on postoperative d 3 and the remaining half were sacrificed on postoperative d 7. Hydroxiproline (HP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4) levels, bursting pressure, and histologic analyses of the anastomotic segments were compared. Results FT3 levels significantly decreased in control groups rats compared with the sham group ( P < 0.01). However, T3 hormone given rats had no decline in FT3 levels. Anastomotic bursting pressure was significantly higher in the experimental group rats on postoperative d 7 ( P = 0.015). Histopathologic analyses of the anastomotic segments determined significantly more severe edema and necrosis in control group rats ( P < 0.05). Collagen deposition in the anastomotic tissue was significantly higher in experimental group rats on postoperative d 7 ( P = 0.015). Conclusion Anastomosis after colon resection is associated with decreased FT3 level. T3 supplementation ameliorates the reduction in FT3 and seems to provide constructive therapeutic effects on anastomotic healing.

This was a prospective, cross sectional controlled study conducted in a training and research hospital.The study population consisted of 46 reproductive-age PCOS women and 28 control subjects. We evaluated anthropometric and metabolic parameters, carotid intima media thickness and HFABP levels in both PCOS patients and control group.
Mean fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, free testosterone, total testosterone, carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) levels were significantly higher in PCOS patients. Although HFABP levels were higher in PCOS patients, the difference did not reach statistically significant in early age groups. After adjustment for age and body mass index, HFABP level was positive correlated with hsCRP, free testosterone levels, CIMT and HOMA-IR.
Heart type free fatty acid binding protein appeared to have an important role in metabolic response and subsequent development of atherosclerosis in insulin resistant, hyperandrogenemic PCOS patients.
Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) is independently associated with morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular diseases. RDW is elevated in hypertensive patients compared with normotensives. ...Based on the nocturnal course, hypertension classified as dipper and non-dipper. Non-dipper hypertension is associated with higher inflammation and worse prognosis. We aimed to investigate whether RDW and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) are elevated in non-dipper hypertensive patients compared with dippers. The study included total 247 essential hypertensive patients. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed for each patient. Thereafter patients were divided into the two groups on the basis of the results of 24-h ABPM: 127 dipper hypertensives and 120 non-dipper hypertensives. Complete blood count and biochemistry were measured by standard methods and hsCRP was assessed by using BN2 model nephelometer. Non-dippers had significantly higher RDW levels than dippers 14.6 (13.8-17.0) vs 13.0 (12.5-13.4), p < 0.001, respectively. After adjustment for hemoglobin, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, sex, age and hs-CRP, mean RDW values were for dipper and non-dippers 13.4 (12.4-13.2) and 14.5 (13.7-16.8), respectively (p < 0.001). RDW was negatively correlated with the percentage decline of systolic and diastolic BP from day to night (r = − 0.392, p < 0.001 and r = − 0.294, p < 0.001, respectively). Serum hsCRP levels were also significantly higher in the non-dippers (p < 0.001) and it was significantly positively correlated with RDW (r = 0.403, p < 0.001). In receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal cut-off value of RDW to predict non-dipping pattern was > 13.8%, with 80% sensitivity and 75% specificity. RDW is significantly increased in patients with non-dipper hypertension compared with the dipper hypertension. Inflammatory activity was closely related to RDW in non-dipper hypertensives. RDW, as easy and quick measurable tool, can predict non-dipping pattern in essential hypertension.
Cancer prevention and treatment strategies have attracted increasing interest. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis extract, specifically inhibits NF-κB at μM ...concentrations and shows ability to stop 5-lipoxygenase-catalyzed oxygenation of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid. Previous studies have demonstrated that CAPE exhibits antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiproliferative, cytostatic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and, most improtantly, antineoplastic properties. The primary goal of the present review is to summarize and critically evaluate the current knowledge regarding the anticancer effect of CAPE in different cancer types.
OBJECTIVESThe aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of serum transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), fetuin-A, and fibroblast growth ...factor 21 (FGF21) in the detection of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The value of the noninvasive fibrosis models – that is, the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI), the fibrosis index based on the four factors (FIB-4) score, and Forn’s index – was also examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODSCHB patients who underwent liver biopsy for the evaluation of fibrosis were included in the study. A total of 73 patients were divided into two groups according to their METAVIR scores (F0–1, no/minimal fibrosis; F2–4, significant fibrosis). Serum levels of TGF-β1, TIMP-1, fetuin-A, and FGF21 were measured besides APRI, FIB-4, and Forn’s scores. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was measured for each parameter, followed by calculation of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values.
RESULTSAPRI, FIB-4, and Forn’s index scores were significantly higher in patients with significant fibrosis (P<0.05). There was no difference between no/minimal fibrosis and significant fibrosis groups in terms of serum levels of TGFβ-1, TIMP-1, fetuin-A, and FGF21 (P>0.05). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for TGF-β1, TIMP-1, fetuin-A, FGF21, APRI, FIB-4, and Forn’s index were 0.445, 0.483, 0.436, 0.585, 0.662, 0.687, and 0.680, respectively.
CONCLUSIONOur results suggest that serum TGF-β1, TIMP-1, fetuin-A, and FGF21 are not useful for the assessment of the extent of liver fibrosis in CHB in this patient group. However, APRI, FIB-4, and Forn’s index have a better diagnostic value in patients with significant fibrosis than in those with no/minimal fibrosis.
