Understanding and controlling physical aging, that is, the spontaneous temporal evolution of out-of-equilibrium systems, represents one of the greatest tasks in material science. Recent studies have ...revealed the existence of a complex atomic motion in metallic glasses, with different aging regimes in contrast with the typical continuous aging observed in macroscopic quantities. By combining dynamical and structural synchrotron techniques, here for the first time we directly connect previously identified microscopic structural mechanisms with the peculiar atomic motion, providing a broader unique view of their complexity. We show that the atomic scale is dominated by the interplay between two processes: rearrangements releasing residual stresses related to a cascade mechanism of relaxation, and medium range ordering processes, which do not affect the local density, likely due to localized relaxations of liquid-like regions. As temperature increases, a surprising additional secondary relaxation process sets in, together with a faster medium range ordering, likely precursors of crystallization.
West Nile Virus (WNV) first arrived in Ontario, Canada in 2001 and has since spread throughout most of the province, causing disease in humans. The provincial government established a province-wide ...surveillance program to monitor WNV transmission throughout the 36 regional health units. Here we have acquired records of WNV human and mosquito surveillance from 2002 to 2013 to describe seasonal and geographic trends in WNV activity in southern Ontario. Additionally, we obtained climate data from seven municipalities to investigate how temperature and precipitation affect WNV transmission dynamics. We identified a strong quadratic relationship between the number of confirmed human cases and positive Culex mosquito pools recorded at the end of each year (R2 = 0.9783, p < 0.001). Using Spearman rank correlation tests, we identified that the minimum infection rate of Culex pipiens/restuans pools are the strongest predictor of human cases at a 1 week lag period. We also identified positive correlations between minimum infection rates, temperature, vector abundance, and cumulative precipitation. Global Moran's I index indicates strong positive autocorrelation and clustering of positive Culex pool counts in southern Ontario. Local indicators of spatial association tests revealed a total of 44 high-high and 1 high-low trap locations (n = 680). In the current work we have identified when and where hot spots of WNV activity have occurred in southern Ontario. The municipalities surrounding the western shore of the Lake Ontario and Windsor-Essex County have the largest records of positive mosquitoes and human cases. We identified that positive mosquitoes are a strong indicator of human cases to follow in the coming weeks. An epidemic action threshold of cumulative positive Culex pools was established, allowing Ontario public health officials to predict an epidemic at epidemiological week 34 (rho = 0.90, p < 0.001). These data have the potential to contribute to more efficient larvicide programs and awareness campaigns for the public.
Nanocomposites made of crystalline nanoinclusions embedded in an amorphous matrix are at the forefront of current research for energy harvesting applications. However, the microscopic mechanisms ...leading alternatively to an effectively reduced or enhanced thermal transport still escape understanding. In this work, we present a molecular dynamics simulation study of model systems, where for the first time we combine a microscopic investigation of phonon dynamics with the macroscopic thermal conductivity calculation, to shed light on thermal transport in these materials. We clearly show that crystalline nanoinclusions represent a novel scattering source for vibrational waves, modifying the nature of low energy vibrations and significantly anticipating the propagative-to-diffusive crossover (Ioffe-Regel), usually located at energies of few THz in amorphous materials. Moreover, this crossover position can be tuned by changing the elastic contrast between nanoinclusions and the matrix, and anticipated by a factor as large as 10 for a harder inclusion. While the propagative contribution to thermal transport is drastically reduced, the calculated thermal conductivity is not significantly affected in the chosen system, as the diffusive contribution dominates heat transport when all phonons are thermally populated. These findings allow finally to understand the panoply of contradictory results reported on thermal transport in nanocomposites and give clear indications to the characteristics that the parent phases should have for efficiently reducing heat transport in a nanocomposite.

Fused deposition modelling is a proven technology for the fabrication of both aesthetic and functional prototypes. The obtainable roughness is the most limiting aspect for its application. The ...prediction of surface quality is an essential tool for the diffusion of this technology, in fact at product development stage, it allows to comply with design specifications and in process planning it is useful to determine manufacturing strategies. The existing models are not robust enough in predicting roughness parameters for all deposition angles, in particular for near horizontal walls. The aim of this work is to determine roughness parameters models reliable over the entire part surface. This purpose is pursued using a feed-forward neural network to fit experimental data. By the utilisation of an evaluation function, the best solution has been found. This has been obtained using a feed-forward neural network for fitting the experimental data. The best solution has been founded by using an evaluation function that we constructed. The validation proved the robustness of the model found to process parameters’ variation and its applicability to different FDM machines and materials.
Neutrinos are abundantly produced in the LHC. Flavour composition and energy reach of the neutrino flux from proton-proton collisions depend on the pseudorapidity . At large , energies can exceed the ...TeV, with a sizeable contribution of the τ flavour. A dedicated detector could intercept this intense neutrino flux in the forward direction, and measure the interaction cross section on nucleons in the unexplored energy range from a few hundred GeV to a few TeV. The high energies of neutrinos result in a larger N interaction cross section, and the detector size can be relatively small. Machine backgrounds vary rapidly while moving along and away from the beam line. Four locations were considered as hosts for a neutrino detector: the CMS quadrupole region (25 m from CMS Interaction Point (IP)), UJ53 and UJ57 (90 and 120 m from CMS IP), RR53 and RR57 (240 m from CMS IP), TI18 (480 m from ATLAS IP). The potential sites are studied on the basis of (a) expectations for neutrino interaction rates, flavour composition and energy spectrum, (b) predicted backgrounds and in situ measurements, performed with a nuclear emulsion detector and radiation monitors. TI18 emerges as the most favourable location. Already with 150 fb−1 expected in LHC Run3, a small detector in TI18 could measure, for the first time and with good precision, the high-energy N cross section for all neutrino flavours.

. As well known, the surface quality characterization of a part is not limited to

but involves many other roughness parameters. The knowledge in advance of these parameters is a critical point especially in the product design stage both for rapid prototyping purpose and finished part manufacturing. In this work, a novel approach aimed to the geometrical description of roughness profile is reported. By means of an analytic formulation it is possible to calculate custom set of roughness parameters. An experimental analysis, based on design of experiments technique, is carried out to investigate the effects of several factors on shape profile. The achieved results permit to define the domain in which the presented model depends only on two parameters. A profilometric analysis has been performed on specimens properly designed to validate the method. Statistical tests show a good accordance with predicted values for the made assumptions and the calculated roughness parameters.
