We report the first measurement of low-energy proton-capture cross sections of Xe124 in a heavy-ion storage ring. Xe12454+ ions of five different beam energies between 5.5 and 8 AMeV were stored to ...collide with a windowless hydrogen target. The Cs125 reaction products were directly detected. The interaction energies are located on the high energy tail of the Gamow window for hot, explosive scenarios such as supernovae and x-ray binaries. The results serve as an important test of predicted astrophysical reaction rates in this mass range. Good agreement in the prediction of the astrophysically important proton width at low energy is found, with only a 30% difference between measurement and theory. Larger deviations are found above the neutron emission threshold, where also neutron and γ widths significantly impact the cross sections. The newly established experimental method is a very powerful tool to investigate nuclear reactions on rare ion beams at low center-of-mass energies.
The determination of neutron capture cross sections of some radioactive isotopes like 85Kr is very important to improve the knowledge about the s process. Based on its own radioactive decay these ...isotopes can only be used in small samples inside a TOF facility, which is why the neutron flux of these facilities has to be very high. Unfortunately the neutron flux of the FRANZ setup at Goethe University Frankfurt, which will offer the highest neutron flux in astrophysical energy regions (keV region) 1, is still to low to investigate isotopes like 85Kr. Therefore a new setup called NAUTILUS is under development, which will reduce the flight path from 80 cm to a few centimeter to enhance the angular coverage of the sample and therefore increase the neutron flux by a factor of nearly 100. This implies a higher intensity of the γ-flash energy inside the detector and the neutron induced background. Hence the geometry, the scintillator material and the moderator were optimized by GEANT3 simulations.
A new approach for constraining the low-energy part of the electric dipole Photon Strength Function (E1-PSF) is presented. Experiments at the Darmstadt High-Intensity Photon Setup and the High ...Intensity γ→-Ray Source have been performed to investigate the decay properties of 130Te between 5.50 and 8.15 MeV excitation energy. In particular, the average γ-ray branching ratio to the ground state and the population intensity of low-lying excited states have been studied. A comparison to the statistical model shows that the latter is sensitive to the low-energy behavior of the E1-PSF, while the average ground state branching ratio cannot be described by the statistical model in the energy range between 5.5 and 6.5 MeV.

The Darmstadt High-Intensity Photon Setup (DHIPS) for photon-scattering and photodissociation experiments at the superconducting electron linear accelerator S–DALINAC has been improved. We report on ...its present performance. The developments include the installation of a segmented radiator for an online evaluation of the beam energy and the construction of a second photon-scattering setup with a Clover detector to deduce parity assignments. The enhancement of the existing photon-scattering setup with an additional 100% HPGe detector and some minor changes are described as well as the installation of two setups for photon-induced activation. In addition, we present a comparison of experimental data to Monte Carlo simulations using the codes Geant 3.21 and GEANT4.
Cross sections for neutron-induced reactions of short-lived nuclei are essential for nuclear astrophysics since these reactions in the stars are responsible for the production of most heavy elements ...in the universe. These reactions are also key in applied domains like energy production and medicine. Nevertheless, neutron-induced cross-section measurements can be extremely challenging or even impossible to perform due to the radioactivity of the targets involved. Indirect measurements through the surrogate-reaction method can help to overcome these difficulties. The surrogate-reaction method relies on the use of an alternative reaction that will lead to the formation of the same excited nucleus as in the neutron-induced reaction of interest. The decay probabilities (for fission, neutron and gamma-ray emission) of the nucleus produced via the surrogate reaction allow one to constrain models and the prediction of the desired neutron cross sections. We propose to perform surrogate reaction measurements in inverse kinematics at heavy-ion storage rings, in particular at the CRYRING@ESR of the GSI/FAIR facility. We present the conceptual idea of the most promising setup to measure for the first time simultaneously the fission, neutron and gamma-ray emission probabilities. The results of the first simulations considering the 238U(d,d') reaction are shown, as well as new technical developments that are being carried out towards this set-up.
