Scab is the most damaging disease of pecan in the southeastern United States. Pecan trees can attain 44 m in height, so managing disease in the upper canopy is a problem. Fungicide is ordinarily ...applied using ground-based air-blast sprayers. Although mechanical hedge-pruning and topping of pecan is done for several reasons, improved management of scab is an important reason in the humid, wet Southeast. Resulting shoot growth on cut limbs of susceptible cultivars could lead to more severe scab. In three experiments over three years, we explored the effect of hedge-pruning trees to ∼12 to 14 m compared with non-hedge-pruned trees. All trees received fungicide treatments (air-blast sprays and ≤3 aerial applications). Hedge-pruning either had no effect, or increased or decreased scab severity only slightly on leaflets, immature, or mature fruit (a -9.95 to +14.63% difference in scab severity compared with the control). However, height in the canopy invariably had a large and significant effect on scab severity, and amounted to a 0.05 to 73.77% difference in severity between the lowest and highest sample in the canopy. Fruit weight depended on sample height, with fruit most often weighing less when collected at greater sample heights. A robust relationship between fruit weight and scab severity was found at the highest sample heights where scab was also most often severe (R
= 0.21 to 0.67, P < 0.0001). Hedge-pruning and topping pecan tree canopies to manage tree size will enable better fungicide coverage, reducing risk of a scab epidemic as more of the canopy is assured efficacious fungicide spray coverage.
We report on photometric observations of two WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, MASTER OT J211258.65+242145.4 and MASTER OT J203749.39+552210.3, which underwent outbursts in 2012. Early superhumps were ...recorded in both systems. During the superoutburst plateau, ordinary superhumps with a period of 0.060291(4) d (MASTER J211258) and with 0.061368(11) d (MASTER J203749) on average were observed. MASTERJ211258 and MASTERJ203749 exhibited eight post-superoutburst rebrightenings and more than four, respectively. In the final part of the superoutburst, an increase in superhump period was seen in both systems. We made a survey of WZSge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings, and confirmed that the superhump periods of WZSge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings were longer than those of WZSge-type dwarf novae without a rebrightening. Although WZSge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings have been thought to be likely candidates for period bouncers based on their low mass ratio (q), inferred from the period of fully grown (stage B) superhumps, our new method of using the period of growing superhumps (stage A superhumps), however, implies higher q's than those expected from stage B superhumps. These q values appear to be consistent with the duration of the stage A superoutbursts, which likely reflects the growth time of the 3W1 resonance. We present a working hypothesis that the small fractional superhump excesses for stage B superhumps in these systems may be explained by a gas pressure effect that works more efficiently in these systems than in ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae. This result forms a new picture that WZSge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings and SU UMa-type ones without a rebrightening (they are not period bouncers) are located in the same place on the evolutionary track.
Abstract
We report on photometric observations of two dwarf novae, OT J075418.7+381225 and OT J230425.8+062546, which showed superoutbursts in 2013 (OT J075418) and in 2011 (OT J230425). Their mean ...periods of the superhump were 0.0722403(26) d (OT J075418) and 0.067317(35) d (OT J230425). These objects showed a very long growth stage of the superhump (stage A) and a large period decrease in the stage A–B transition. The long stage A suggests slow evolution of the superhump due to the very small mass ratio of these objects. The declining rates during the plateau phase in the superoutburst of these objects were lower than those of SU UMa-type dwarf novae (DNe) with a similar superhump period. These properties were similar to those of SSS J122221.7−311523, the most likely candidate for the period bouncer. Therefore, these two DNe are regarded as likely candidates for the period bouncer. We estimated the number density of period bouncers roughly from our observations for the last five years. There is a possibility that these WZ Sge-type DNe with unusual outburst properties might account for the missing population of the period bouncer suggested by the evolutionary scenario.
How black holes accrete surrounding matter is a fundamental yet unsolved question in astrophysics. It is generally believed that matter is absorbed into black holes via accretion disks, the state of ...which depends primarily on the mass-accretion rate. When this rate approaches the critical rate (the Eddington limit), thermal instability is supposed to occur in the inner disk, causing repetitive patterns of large-amplitude X-ray variability (oscillations) on timescales of minutes to hours. In fact, such oscillations have been observed only in sources with a high mass-accretion rate, such as GRS 1915+105 (refs 2, 3). These large-amplitude, relatively slow timescale, phenomena are thought to have physical origins distinct from those of X-ray or optical variations with small amplitudes and fast timescales (less than about 10 seconds) often observed in other black-hole binaries-for example, XTE J1118+480 (ref. 4) and GX 339-4 (ref. 5). Here we report an extensive multi-colour optical photometric data set of V404 Cygni, an X-ray transient source containing a black hole of nine solar masses (and a companion star) at a distance of 2.4 kiloparsecs (ref. 8). Our data show that optical oscillations on timescales of 100 seconds to 2.5 hours can occur at mass-accretion rates more than ten times lower than previously thought. This suggests that the accretion rate is not the critical parameter for inducing inner-disk instabilities. Instead, we propose that a long orbital period is a key condition for these large-amplitude oscillations, because the outer part of the large disk in binaries with long orbital periods will have surface densities too low to maintain sustained mass accretion to the inner part of the disk. The lack of sustained accretion--not the actual rate--would then be the critical factor causing large-amplitude oscillations in long-period systems.
Abstract
The application and effectiveness of forestry best management practices (BMP) was assessed on 33 harvested sites with streamside management zones (SMZ) throughout West Virginia, which ...coincided with 116 sites of statewide BMP compliance assessment. The sampled sites either showed evidenceof activity in the SMZ or showed evidence of a stream crossing caused by the harvest. Four checklists derived from the West Virginia BMP guidelines were used to assess 27 BMPs on haul roads, skid trails, at landings, and in SMZs. Rankings were analyzed statistically to examine the differencesof BMP application and effectiveness among forester involvement, ownership, harvest, and stream type. The overall BMP application and effectiveness on sites with SMZs averaged 85 and 80% in West Virginia. Results also indicated that the BMP application and effectiveness rates were higheron industry-owned lands or with forester involvement than on private lands or without forester involvement. The findings should be useful to aid in future assessments of application and effectiveness of BMP across West Virginia or in the region.
We report the detailed history of spin-period changes in five intermediate polars (DQ Herculis, AO Piscium, FO Aquarii, V1223 Sagittarii, and BG Canis Minoris) during the 30-60 yr since their ...original discovery. Most are slowly spinning up, although there are sometimes years-long episodes of spin-down. This is supportive of the idea that the underlying magnetic white dwarfs are near spin equilibrium. In addition to the ∼40 stars sharing many properties and defined by their strong, pulsed X-ray emission, there are a few rotating much faster (P < 80 s), whose membership in the class is still in doubt-and who are overdue for closer study.
Six small-scale sawmills were investigated on two separate occasions to evaluate lumber edging, trimming, and grading practices across West Virginia. Measurements for wane, clearwood, and defects ...were taken on 60 pieces of lumber prior to edging and trimming at each sawmill. Measurements were taken for widths and defects at 1-foot increments on the board to retain the optimum width and length of the top face using reference points to maintain the determined measurements. A private National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) certified lumber grader was employed to determine the grade of each face of the boards. The boards were then put back into the system to be edged, trimmed, and graded by sawmill employees. After processing, the grade and surface measure obtained independently by the private NHLA certified grader and the sawmill's grader were compared for each board. Results indicated that all of the sawmills investigated were losing money to some extent because of their edging, trimming, and grading practices. An average loss of nearly half a foot of surface measure per board was found based on all 360 boards. The average dollar-value loss ranged from 0.5 to 24. 1 percent per board. With increased training in edging, trimming, and grading requirements, these losses could be reduced and the small sawmills' yield and revenue could be improved. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
The intermediate polar FO Aquarii (FO Aqr) experienced its first reported low-accretion states in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and, using newly available photographic plates, we identify prediscovery low ...states in 1965, 1966, and 1974. The primary focus of our analysis, however, is an extensive set of time-series photometry obtained between 2002 and 2018, with particularly intensive coverage of the 2016-2018 low states. After computing an updated spin ephemeris for the white dwarf (WD), we show that its spin period began to increase in 2014 after having spent 27 yr decreasing; no other intermediate polar has experienced a sign change of its period derivative, but FO Aqr has now done so twice. Our central finding is that the recent low states all occurred shortly after the WD began to spin down, even though no low states were reported in the preceding quarter-century, when it was spinning up. Additionally, the system's mode of accretion is extremely sensitive to the mass-transfer rate, with accretion being almost exclusively disk-fed when FO Aqr is brighter than V ∼ 14 and substantially stream-fed when it is not. Even in the low states, a grazing eclipse remains detectable, confirming the presence of a disklike structure (but not necessarily a Keplerian accretion disk). We relate these various observations to theoretical predictions that during the low state, the system's accretion disk dissipates into a non-Keplerian ring of diamagnetic blobs. Finally, a new XMM-Newton observation from a high state in 2017 reveals an anomalously soft X-ray spectrum and diminished X-ray luminosity compared to pre-2016 observations.
Six weed control programs with and without irrigation were investigated in a newly established pecan orchard. Irrigation increased crown diameter growth in only one of seven growing seasons but ...increased nut yield an average of 35% in the first two bearing years. Weed control program significantly influenced crown diameter beginning in the fourth growing season and continued through season six while also impacting final crown diameter. The use of postemergence (POST) herbicides increased crown diameter a minimum 4 mm vs. preemergence (PRE) herbicides. Mowing neither increased nor decreased crown diameter when used with herbicides; however, when used solely, crown diameter was 29% less. Highest growth rates were obtained with a combination PRE plus POST weed management system. Nut yields were closely linked to growth data. No differences in nut yield were observed between PRE- or POST-herbicide programs alone or in combination with mowing. Mowing alone decreased nut yield 57% vs. herbicide-based approaches. A combination PRE- plus POST-weed control program increased yield 38% vs. all other treatments. Nomenclature: Pecan, Carya illinoinensis (Wang.) K. Koch var. ‘Desirable’.
