Performing nanoscale scanning electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) requires three essential ingredients: First, a static magnetic field together with field gradients to Zeeman split the electronic ...energy levels with spatial resolution; second, a radio frequency (rf) magnetic field capable of inducing spin transitions; finally, a sensitive detection method to quantify the energy absorbed by spins. This is usually achieved by combining externally applied magnetic fields with inductive coils or cavities, fluorescent defects, or scanning probes. Here, we theoretically propose the realization of an EPR scanning sensor merging all three characteristics into a single device: the vortex core stabilized in ferromagnetic thin-film discs. On one hand, the vortex ground state generates a significant static magnetic field and field gradients. On the other hand, the precessional motion of the vortex core around its equilibrium position produces a circularly polarized oscillating magnetic field, which is enough to produce spin transitions. Finally, the spin–magnon coupling broadens the vortex gyrotropic frequency, suggesting a direct measure of the presence of unpaired electrons. Moreover, the vortex core can be displaced by simply using external magnetic fields of a few mT, enabling EPR scanning microscopy with large spatial resolution. Our numerical simulations show that, by using low damping magnets, it is theoretically possible to detect single spins located on the disc’s surface. Vortex nanocavities could also attain strong coupling to individual spin molecular qubits with potential applications to mediate qubit–qubit interactions or to implement qubit readout protocols.
This review explores the historical and current significance of gestures as a universal form of communication with a focus on hand gestures in virtual reality applications. It highlights the ...evolution of gesture detection systems from the 1990s, which used computer algorithms to find patterns in static images, to the present day where advances in sensor technology, artificial intelligence, and computing power have enabled real-time gesture recognition. The paper emphasizes the role of hand gestures in virtual reality (VR), a field that creates immersive digital experiences through the Ma blending of 3D modeling, sound effects, and sensing technology. This review presents state-of-the-art hardware and software techniques used in hand gesture detection, primarily for VR applications. It discusses the challenges in hand gesture detection, classifies gestures as static and dynamic, and grades their detection difficulty. This paper also reviews the haptic devices used in VR and their advantages and challenges. It provides an overview of the process used in hand gesture acquisition, from inputs and pre-processing to pose detection, for both static and dynamic gestures.
The work carried out in this paper consists of the classification of the physiological signal generated by eye movement called Electrooculography (EOG). The human eye performs simultaneous movements, ...when focusing on an object, generating a potential change in origin between the retinal epithelium and the cornea and modeling the eyeball as a dipole with a positive and negative hemisphere. Supervised learning algorithms were implemented to classify five eye movements; left, right, down, up and blink. Wavelet Transform was used to obtain information in the frequency domain characterizing the EOG signal with a bandwidth of 0.5 to 50 Hz; training results were obtained with the implementation of K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) 69.4%, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) of 76.9% and Decision Tree (DT) 60.5%, checking the accuracy through the Jaccard index and other metrics such as the confusion matrix and ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve. As a result, the best classifier for this application was the SVM with Jaccard Index.
Scope
The flavanol (−)‐epicatechin (Epi) has cardioprotective effects and improves physical capacity in normal mice. In addition, Epi increases nitric oxide (NO) production by activation of both ...PI3K/Akt or Ca2+/CaMI/CaMKII (where Akt is protein kinase B; PI3K is phosphoinositide 3‐kinase; CaMI is calmodulin; CaMKII is Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase II) signaling pathways, which have been associated with physiological and pathological cardiac hypertrophy, respectively. Notwithstanding all this information, few studies have been carried out that aimed to determine the potential beneficial effects that Epi may have in normal heart.
Methods and results
Mice were treated by oral gavage with the flavanol Epi. The treatment induced a significant increase in heart weight, size of the free walls, and size of the cardiac fibers. Also, no evidence of cardiac fibrosis was revealed. Furthermore, the phosphorylation level of PI3K/Akt/mTOR/p70S6K (where mTOR is mammalian target of rapamycin; p70S6K is ribosomal protein S6 kinase beta‐1) proteins was significantly higher in the heart of Epi‐treated animals. In contrast, a significantly decreased level of pathological cardiac hypertrophy markers atrial natriuretic peptide and brain natriuretic peptide was observed along with no modification in the level of β myosin heavy chain beta, calmodulin, and Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase II proteins. Hemodynamic parameters indicated an improvement in mechanical heart performance after Epi treatment. Interestingly, morphometric parameters were similar between treated and untreated mice after 4 wk without treatment.
Conclusion
These findings indicate that Epi treatment induced physiological cardiac growth in healthy mice by activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway.
(−)‐Epicatechin, an abundant flavanol of the cocoa plant, has cardioprotective effects. Here, it is found that mice administrated with this flavanol show a cardiac physiological growth by activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Additionally, this growth is reversed by stopping the administration of the flavanol.
Among the epigenetic mechanisms based on non-coding RNA are microRNAs (miRNAs) that are involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of mRNAs. In many organisms, the expression of genes involved ...in the cellular response to biotic or abiotic stress depends on the regulation, generally inhibitory, performed by miRNAs. For the first time in the eukaryotic microorganism (ciliate-model) Tetrahymena thermophila, miRNAs involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of transcripts linked to the response to cadmium have been isolated and analyzed. Forty de novo miRNAs (we named tte-miRNAs) have been isolated from control and Cd-treated populations (1 or 24 h exposures). An exhaustive comparative analysis of the features of these mature tte-miRNAs and their precursor sequences (pre-tte-miRNAs) confirms that they are true miRNAs. In addition to the three types of miRNA isoforms previously described in other organisms, two new types are also described among the tte-miRNAs studied. A certain percentage of the pre-tte-miRNA sequences are in introns from genes with many introns, and have been defined as 5', 3'-tailed mirtrons. A qRT-PCR analysis of selected tte-miRNAs together with some of their targets has validated them. Cd is one of the most toxic metals for the cell, which must defend itself against its toxicity by various mechanisms, such as expulsion by membrane pumps, chelation by metallothioneins, among others. Like other toxic metals, Cd also causes a well-known series of cellular effects such as intense proteotoxicity. Many of the targets that are regulated by the tte-miRNAs are transcripts encoding proteins that fit into these defense mechanisms and toxic metal effects.
Seed dispersal by frugivorous bird species involves a fine temporal tuning between fruiting plants and birds. However, this interaction may be severely threatened by anthropogenic climate and ...land‐use change, which may result in phenological mismatches and pervasive ecological consequences for avian communities. In this study, we evaluate changes at long (~40 years) and short‐time (seasonal) spans in an avian frugivore community using a snapshot resampling. Particularly, we focus on changes in composition, abundance, migratory timing (i.e. phenology) and physical condition in relation to variations in fruit supply. We used bird and fruit data collected during 1981–1983 and 2019–2021 in a Mediterranean scrubland site in Doñana Natural Area, SW Spain. Our findings indicate a profound transformation of species composition, bird phenology and body condition: in ~40 years, the avian community showed a 66% and 18.4% decrease of the abundance of wintering and seed‐disperser species, respectively. Seasonal abundance peaks were advanced for at least one month in the 9 out of 11 frugivorous bird species included in the analyses. Avian body condition during the migratory passage has worsened, with fewer individuals showing a high‐fat percentage now than in the past. Finally, we report a fruit production decrease of almost half in 2019–2021 compared to 1981–1983, probably linked to habitat encroachment by pine trees and replacement of fleshy‐fruited shrubs. Vegetation encroachment and climate change are the most plausible explanations for the observed changes in the avian community, but the relative importance of these factors is yet unknown. Our results at a local scale mirror the dramatic consequences of global change affecting the diversity, phenology and physical condition of frugivorous bird species reported in multiple studies across the globe. The loss of frugivores may trigger feedback mechanisms in which seed dispersal is disrupted, leading to impaired recruitment of fruiting plants and hence less food availability for the avian community.
A strain of the protozoan ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila adapted to increasing Pb(II) concentrations over two years has shown that one of the resistance mechanisms to this extreme metal stress is ...the lead biomineralization to chloropyromorphite, one of the most stable minerals in the earth's crust. Several techniques such as microanalysis coupled to transmission and scanning electron microscopy (X-Ray Energy Disperse Spectroscopy), fluorescence microscopy and X-ray power diffraction analysis have revealed the presence of chloropyromorphite as crystalline aggregates of nano-globular structure, together with the presence of other secondary lead minerals. This is the first time that the existence of this type of biomineralization in a ciliate protozoan is described. The Pb(II) bioremediation capacity of this strain has shown that it can remove >90 % of the toxic soluble lead from the medium. A quantitative proteomic analysis of this strain has revealed the main molecular-physiological elements involved in adaptation to Pb(II) stress: increased activity of proteolytic systems against lead proteotoxicity, occurrence of metallothioneins to immobilize Pb(II) ions, antioxidant enzymes to mitigate oxidative stress, and an intense vesicular trafficking presumably involved in the formation of vacuoles where pyromorphite accumulates and is subsequently excreted, together with an enhanced energy metabolism. As a conclusion, all these results have been compiled into an integrated model that could explain the eukaryotic cellular response to extreme lead stress.

Unhealthy diets are recognized as a major risk factor for many diseases. The decrease in costs of industrialized products, as well as the possible misinformation about a healthy diet, has led to new ...behaviors in the dietary patterns of the pediatric population. The costs of dietary patterns have not been estimated in our population, so the objective of this study was to determine the cost associated with dietary patterns in Mexican children and adolescents, hypothesizing that a healthy diet is not necessarily more economically expensive. This study analyzed data from a population-based cross-sectional study of healthy children and adolescents in Mexico City. Data were collected from a food frequency questionnaire and the meal cost of habitual food shopping. Eating patterns were obtained by using principal component analysis. A micro-costing technique was performed to obtain the direct costs of each pattern. When comparing the healthy pattern with the transition and non-healthy patterns, it was observed that there were no statistically significant differences between the dietary patterns (p = 0.8293). The cost of the healthy pattern only takes up 16.6% of the total biweekly income of a salaried Mexican. In this study, no differences were observed between the costs of a healthy and a less healthy diet.
There is no consensus on optimal treatment duration for propranolol in infantile hemangioma (IH). We evaluated the efficacy and safety of oral propranolol solution administered for a minimum of 6 ...months up to a maximum of 12 months of age in high-risk IH.
This single-arm, open-label, phase 3 study was conducted in patients aged 35 to 150 days with high-risk IH in 10 hospitals between 2015 and 2017. The study comprised a 6-month initial treatment period (ITP) plus continuation up to 12 months of age if complete success was not achieved, a follow-up, and a retreatment period. Patients received oral propranolol twice daily (3 mg/kg per day). The primary end point was the success rate at the end of the ITP. Furthermore, the persistence of IH response and efficacy of retreatment was evaluated.
The success rate after 6 months of treatment was 47%, increasing to 76% at the end of the ITP. Of the patients who achieved success, 68% sustained success for 3 months without treatment, and 24% required retreatment. Of the 8 patients who were retreated, 7 achieved success. Adverse events, reported by 80% of patients, were mild, which were expected in this population or known propranolol side effects.
Oral propranolol administered beyond 6 months and up to 12 months of age meaningfully increases the success rate in high-risk IH. Success was sustained in most patients up to 3 months after stopping treatment. Retreatment was efficacious, and the safety profile satisfactory.
En este artículo analizamos la producción científica de la televisión pública divulgada entre 2001 y 2019 en las bases de datos de Web of Science, caracterizando la información extraída de los ...metadatos con un análisis bibliométrico e identificando los estudios de medios, tradiciones teóricas de la comunicación y metodologías con el análisis de contenido. Se hallaron 202 artículos que corresponden al 1% de las publicaciones con la palabra clave “televisión”, evidenciando el vacío en los estudios de la televisión pública. Los resultados demuestran una centralización del conocimiento en España y Estados Unidos. Regiones como América Latina, Asia y Oceanía tienen una baja participación. Los académicos se han interesado por los procesos de producción a partir de la tradición sociocultural.
