The emblem book was invented by the humanist lawyer Andrea Alciato in 1531. The preponderance of juridical and normative themes, of images of rule and infraction, of obedience and error in the emblem ...books is critical to their purpose and interest. This book outlines the history of the emblem tradition as a juridical genre, along with the concept of, and training in, obiter depicta, in things seen along the way to judgment. It argues that these books depict norms and abuses in classically derived forms that become the visual standards of governance. Despite the plethora of vivid figures and virtual symbols that define and transmit law, contemporary lawyers are not trained in the critical apprehension of the visible. This book is the first to reconstruct the history of the emblem tradition, evidencing the extent to which a gallery of images of law already exists and structuring how the public realm is displayed, made present and viewed.

The archive is in significant part the melancholic record of death. It harbours coffins, tombs and tomes. An image, first, of an untimely death. Part of a personal archive, the record of time long ...since spent. Shards of a history that did not happen. A shadow. A shade. Dr Ewan Maclean, a figure of encyclopedic learning and aesthetic inclinations, did his doctorate on art forgery. I knew him, and I had admired his knowledge and his thesis while studying in Edinburgh. He was short, bald, bibliophilic, brilliant but boring and in consequence unmemorable and prone to alcohol and an academic diffidence that led to his joining the civil service and moving to London at around the same time that I was appointed to Birkbeck to set up the law department. Ewan was working on miscarriages of justice and so I asked him to tutor for the new school. He did so rather unsuccessfully for a year or two, only really at ease, so I felt, when drinking with students after class. He never applied for a permanent position. He left London to return to Scotland. Before leaving he gave me a gift, a book, The Addicts Archive, or actually The Film Addicts Archive (Oakes 1977). Then, back in Edinburgh, surrounded by art and books, he drank himself to death. He was cremated at 1pm on August 28, 2013. He left little behind, scarcely a trace or registration, a tentative or inebriate and evaporating ichnological inscription.
In this study we investigated the influence of five different cations on the physical–chemical properties of protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI–). We ...showed that the viscosities, ionic conductivities, densities, and thermal properties of these PILs are strongly affected by the structure of the protic cation. Furthermore, the influence of the cation structure on the lithium coordination was investigated by Raman spectroscopy for all investigated PIL-based electrolytes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). This investigation clearly demonstrates that the lithium average coordination number in PIL-based electrolytes is strongly affected by (ring) size and the number of protons on the cation structure and, more importantly, it might be significantly lower (more than 60%) than that of electrolytes containing aprotic ionic liquids (AILs). Electrochemical performances of these PIL-based electrolytes were then also investigated to address some conclusions on their applicability for LIBs.

The isobaric and isochoric heat capacities of seven 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imides, two 1-alkyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imides, and two ...bis(1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrathiocyanatocobaltates were determined at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range from 293.15 to 323.15 K. The isobaric heat capacities were determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry, whereas isochoric heat capacities were determined along with isothermal compressibilities indirectly by means of the acoustic method from the speed of sound and density measurements. Based on the experimental data, as expected, the isobaric heat capacity increases linearly with increasing alkyl chain length in the cation of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imides and no odd and even carbon number effect is observed. After critical comparison of the obtained data with the available literature data, the most reliable values are recommended. It has been also shown that, although the COSMOthermX calculations underestimated the isobaric heat capacity values whatever the temperature and the ionic liquid structure, the approach used during this work may be applied to estimate physical properties of non-single-charged ions as well. Additionally, based on the speeds of sound the thermal conductivities were calculated using a modified Bridgman relation.
The development of high voltage electrolytes is one of the key aspects for increasing both energy and power density of electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The usage of blends of ionic ...liquids and organic solvents has been considered as a feasible strategy since these electrolytes combine high usable voltages and good transport properties at the same time. In this work, the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide (Pyrr14TFSI) was mixed with two nitrile-based organic solvents, namely butyronitrile and adiponitrile, and the resulting blends were investigated regarding their usage in electrochemical double layer capacitors. Both blends have a high electrochemical stability, which was confirmed by prolonged float tests at 3.2V, as well as, good transport properties. In fact, the butyronitrile blend reaches a conductivity of 17.14mS·cm−1 and a viscosity of 2.46mPa·s at 20°C, which is better than the state-of-the-art electrolyte (1mol·dm−3 of tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate in propylene carbonate).
