A newly-developed online laboratory experiment in immersive virtual reality (VR) is used for process engineering students. A digital twin (DT) of a jet pump was realised using the game engine Unreal ...Engine 4. The chance was taken for an instructional redesign deviating from the conventional cookbook-experiment to better integrate the changing competence demands of the working world 4.0 (W4.0). A real-world scenario (RWS) is used to address the sometimes-vague problem-solving assignments of W4.0: the students found themselves in an ambiguous situation which must be cleared and resolved constructively and autonomously by them. The RWS was evaluated by triangulating qualitative and quantitative methods. Firstly, its Constructive Alignment was evaluated, i.e. whether the intended learning outcomes to be achieved through the novel teaching and learning activities were reflected in the assessment tasks, too. Secondly, students were surveyed regarding their attitudes towards such new forms of laboratory learning. The results show that even if the students initially seem overwhelmed by the unfamiliar type of assignment, they are nevertheless able to solve the work-related engineering problem - at least with varying degrees of assistance from a fictional immediate superior. The students appreciate the opportunity to think creatively and independently develop solutions to the assignment.
The timing resolution of a VLPC/preamplifier system has been measured using a pulsed nitrogen laser light source. Several fast, low-noise, transimpedance amplifiers have been tested. To determine the ...timing resolution degradation due to the preamplifier circuits, a high intensity light source was employed to allow studies of signals from the VLPC with and without amplification. The test apparatus is presented, and a new setup which includes a radioactive source for use with a scintillating-fiber/VLPC is proposed.< >
We present the results of the study of quantum efficiency and gain of Visible Light Photon Counters (VLPC) at high counting rates, expected in their application as readout detectors of the ...scintillating fiber tracker in the Doe detector. At a projected maximum rate of 10{center_dot}10{sup 6} photoelectrons/sec, the VLPC quantum efficiency only decreases to 97% of its maximum value. Since other applications may involve higher counting rates, we present data up to rates of 90{center_dot}10{sup 6} photoelectrons/sec.
When Pollock set out in 1988-89 to theorize German Indology, it was his declared ambition to adapt the theoretical premises of Edward W. Said's Orientalism (1978) in such a way that they could also ...be applied to German Orientalism, which Said had decided to ignore. According to Pollock, the specific contribution of German Indology to the implied ideology of domination is the antithesis--essentialized in the dichotomy between Indo-German and Semite.
Background: Persons with dementia hospitalized for an acute illness have a high risk of poor outcomes and add to the burden on acute care systems. We developed a segregated Special Care Unit (SCU) in ...a somatic hospital for patients with challenging behavior resulting from dementia and/or delirium. This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and patient outcomes. Methods: The SCU was established with environmental features that allow for safe and unrestricted ambulation within the unit and create a home-like atmosphere. Daytime activities structure the day and assure additional professional presence. The staff received intensive specialized training. Feasibility criteria were: acceptance by the staff, avoidance of transfers to geriatric psychiatry, lack of serious falls and mortality. Patient outcome criteria were ADL (Barthel index), mobility scores and behavior scores (Wilcoxon's, McNemar tests, pre-post design). Results: 332 consecutively admitted patients were enrolled. The SCU has been well received by the staff. Length of hospital stay did not differ from other hospital patients (15.3 ± 8.3 vs. 15.0 ± 10.3 days, p = 0.54). Six patients were transferred to geriatric psychiatry. Two patients suffered a fall-related hip fracture. The median Barthel Index improved significantly (admission 30, discharge 45, p < 0.001), with only 8.5% of patients suffering functional loss. Wandering, aggression and agitation were significantly reduced (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The SCU has improved the care of patients with challenging behavior. Decline in ADL function and institutionalization occurred to a lesser degree than would be expected in this group of patients. Despite the selection of patients with behavioral problems, transfer to psychiatry was rare.
We present new results of the search for WH --> lvb (b) over bar production in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root S = 1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated ...luminosity of 0.44 fb(-1). We combine these new results with previously published searches by the DO collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E(T)b (b) over bar final state, for ZH (--> l(+)l(-)b (b) over bar) production, for WH (-->. WWW) production, and for H (--> W W) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the W H analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. (expected) upper limits on sigma(p (p) over bar --> WH) x B(H --> b (b) over bar) ranging from 1.6 (2.2) ph to 1.9 (3.3) pb for Higgs boson masses between 105 and 145 GeV, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 0.13 pb for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with mass in m(H) = 115 GeV. After combination with the other DO Higgs boson searches, we obtain for in H = 115 GeV an observed (expected) limit 8.5 (12.1) times higher than the SM predicted Higgs boson production cross section. For m(H) = 160 GeV, the corresponding observed (expected) ratio is 10.2 (9.0).
This paper describes the development and management of a new model of care for hospitalized patients with challenging behaviour evoked by dementia and/or delirium. To ameliorate care for patients ...with dementia in a geriatric acute care hospital a segregated Special Care Unit for patients with challenging behaviour was created. Environmental features allow for safe and unrestricted ambulation within the unit and create a home-like atmosphere. Day-time activities structure the day and assure additional professional presence in the unit. An intensive training program for the staff was provided. The SCU has been well accepted by the staff and is considered to be an improvement in care. Psychological burden of the nurses did not increase over a time period of one year in caring for these difficult patients.
Searches for Physics beyond the Standard Model have entered an exciting new phase: the complete HERA data samples obtained until the end of operations in the Summer of 2007 are now available for ...analysis. ZEUS and H1 have each collected about 0.5 fb^{-1} of lepton proton data, distributed over electron and positron running, and over different lepton beam polarisations. At the same time the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider is accumulating data at unprecedented rates, with current analyses based on up to 3 fb^{-1}. The Tevatron experiments DZERO and CDF have each already recorded over 4 fb^{-1} (Fall 2008), and are aiming for a total of 8 fb^{-1} of antiproton-proton collisions at 2 TeV center-of-mass energy for Tevatron Run II. I am presenting recent updates (from the last 12 months) on searches, grouped loosely into three classes: well-established `traditional' searches, mostly for very specific signatures and models, more recent and/or more generalized searches for broader classes of phenomena, and newer searches that strive to be model-independent.

Tevatron collider (Batavia, IL, USA) has undergone significant upgrades in anticipation of high luminosity running conditions. As part of the upgrade, the ...capabilities of the Central Track Trigger (CTT) to make trigger decisions based on hit patterns in the Central Fiber Tracker (CFT) have been much improved. We report on the implementation, commissioning and operation of the upgraded CTT system.
