We investigated whether genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB) influences lung adenocarcinoma development among never-smokers using TB genome-wide association study (GWAS) results within the ...Female Lung Cancer Consortium in Asia. Pathway analysis with the adaptive rank truncated product method was used to assess the association between a TB-related gene-set and lung adenocarcinoma using GWAS data from 5512 lung adenocarcinoma cases and 6277 controls. The gene-set consisted of 31 genes containing known/suggestive associations with genetic variants from previous TB-GWAS. Subsequently, we followed-up with Mendelian Randomization to evaluate the association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma using three genome-wide significant variants from previous TB-GWAS in East Asians. The TB-related gene-set was associated with lung adenocarcinoma (p = 0.016). Additionally, the Mendelian Randomization showed an association between TB and lung adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.66, p = 0.027). Our findings support TB as a causal risk factor for lung cancer development among never-smoking Asian women.

From an ...application point of view, it is desirable to develop stable multifunctional lead‐free halide perovskites. We have developed a series of Cs2PtxSn1−xCl6 perovskites (0≤x≤1) with high stability, which show switchable photoluminescence and photocatalytic functions by varying the amount of Pt4+ substitution. A Cs2PtxSn1−xCl6 solid solution with a dominant proportion of Pt4+ shows broadband photoluminescence with a lifetime on the microsecond timescale. A Cs2PtxSn1−xCl6 solid solution with a small amount of Pt4+ substitution exhibits photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. An optical spectroscopy study reveals that the switch between photoluminescence and photocatalysis functions is controlled by sub‐band gap states. Our finding provides a new way to develop lead‐free multifunctional halide perovskites with high stability.
A series of Cs2PtxSn1−xCl6 perovskites with high water stability demonstrate switchable photoluminescence and photocatalytic functions on variation of the amount of platinum. With low platinum contents, the photocatalytic function is activated and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is achieved in water, whereas with high platinum contents the photoluminescence function is achieved.
On May 6, 2009, the X-ray imaging and biomedical application beamline(BL13W1) at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility(SSRF) officially opened to users, with 8–72.5 ke V X-rays. The experimental ...station is equipped with four sets of X-ray CCD detectors of different pixel size(0.19–24 μm) for on-line phase-contrast imaging and micro-CT imaging with 0.8 μm spatial resolution and 1 ms temporal resolution. An in vivo microCT experiment for a living insect was realized in 4 s. An X-ray fluorescence detector is equipped for X-ray fluorescence mapping imaging and X-ray fluorescence micro-CT imaging with 50 μm spatial resolution. In order to meet different requirements from the users, several experimental methods, such as X-ray spiral micro-CT, Xray local micro-CT, X-ray fast micro-CT, X-ray grating-based differential micro-CT, X-ray fluorescence microCT and X-ray quantitative micro-CT have been developed, and nearly 60 papers related to those developments for this beamline have been published. Moreover, the beamline has realized the remote fast CT reconstruction, providing a great convenience for the users to process experimental data at their offices. As of August 2014,the beamline has offered the user beamtime of(23 145 h), from which 232 user papers have been published, including 151 SCI papers and 55 papers with SCI impact factor 〉 3. The quantity and quality of the user paper outcome keep a steady increase. Some typical user experimental results are introduced.
The nonlinearity generation mechanisms in temperature compensated SAW (TC-SAW) devices arouse great interest recently. Accurate nonlinearity-simulation methods are needed eagerly to predict and ...further help suppress devices' nonlinearity. This paper develops the propagation theory of finite amplitude waves in nonlinear mediums. The low-frequency variable coupling terms become higher-order nonlinear physical fields' source to derive the third-order harmonic (H3) wave equation. Several important nonlinear origins are taken into full consideration including geometry and material nonlinearity. Based on the nonlinear theory, a nonlinear FEM model is set to directly calculate H3 in TC-SAW resonators without material scale factors, and the bulk mode nonlinear origin is considered with the finite thickness of the piezoelectric substrate. The model explains the periodic bulk wave characteristics of H3 are mainly caused by the nonlinear elastic effect. The amplitude of H3 increases with the thickness of metal and cover layers. Moreover, a new TC-SAW structure with small bumps above the cover layer is designed to suppress H3 response by about 12 dBm.
Background Coronary artery in-stent restenosis (ISR) and late stent thrombosis remain as important complications of stenting. The inflammation reactions to sirolimus and paclitaxel-eluting stents ...were investigated in a swine stenosis model induced by interleukin (IL)-1β.Methods Mini pigs (n=12; 2-3 months old and weighing 25-30 kg) were subjected to thoracotomy. Segments (10 mm)of the mid left anterior descending coronary artery and left circumflex coronary artery were exposed and aseptically wrapped with a cotton mesh soaked with IL-1β (5 μg). After 2 weeks, the animals were anesthetized and quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA) was performed. The stenosis sites were randomized into three groups for stent insertion: a sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) group (FirebirdTM, n=7), a paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) group (TAXUSTM, n=9), and a bare-metal stent (BMS) group (YINYITM, Dalian Yinyi Biomaterials Development Co., Ltd, China, n=8). The three different stents were randomly implanted into stenosis segments. Expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), P-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) was determined by reverse transcription-coupled polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Results QCA showed severe stenosis in IL-1β treated segments. The SES and PES groups showed lower 1-month angiographic late lumen loss (LLL) within the stent and the lesion compared with BMS (P 〈0.05) by follow-up QCA. The SES showed lower LLL than that of PES in reducing 1-month inflammation lesions in pigs by follow-up QCA ((0.15±0.06)mm vs. (0.33±0.01) mm, P 〈0.0001). The neointimal hyperplasia areas in SES and PES showed lower than those of BMS (SES (11.6±1.7) mm2, PES (27.2±1.6) mm2 vs. BMS (76.2±1.3) mm2, P 〈0.0001). The mRNA expression of MCP-1 by RT-PCR in SES and PES showed lower than that of BMS at 30 days after stenting (SES 0.20±0.03, PES 0.48±0.49 vs.BMS 0.58±0.07, P 〈0.05). Levels of VCAM-1 in SES were significantly lower than those of PES and BMS (SES 0.35±0.08 vs. PES 0.65±0.13, BMS 0.70±0.06, P 〈0.05). Histochemical immunostaining of vessel walls showed lower inflammatory chemokine MCP-1 expression in the SES and PES groups compared with BMS.Conclusion SESs were superior in reducing 1-month angiographic LLL in inflammation lesions in pigs, strongly suggesting that SESs can suppress inflammatory reactions in ISR at multiple points.
AIM:To detect the expression of 60 microRNAs(miRNAs)in gastric cancer tissues and find new predictive biomarkers of gastric cancer with metastasis.METHODS:The expressions of 60 candidate miRNAs in 30 ...gastric cancer tissues and paired normal tissues were detected by stem-loop real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. After primary screening of miRNAs expression,5 selected miRNAs were further testified in another 22 paired gastric tissues.Based on the expression level of miRNAs and the status of metastasis to lymph node(LN),receiver-operating-characteristic(ROC)curve were used to evaluate their ability in predicting the status of metastasis to LN.RESULTS:Thirty-eight miRNAs expressions in gastric cancer tissues were significantly different from those in paired normal tissues(P0.01).Among them,31miRNAs were found to be up-expressed in cancer tissues and 1 miRNAs were down-expressed≥1.5 fold vs paired normal gastric tissue.Five microRNAs(miR-125a-3p,miR-133b,miR-143,miR-195 and miR-212)were differently expressed between different metastatic groups in 30 gastric cancer biopsies(P0.05).Partial correlation analysis showed that hsa-mir-212 and hsa-mir-195 were correlated with the status of metastasis to LN in spite of age, gender, tumor location, tumor size, depth of invasion and cell differentiation.ROC analysis indicated that miR-212 and miR-195 have better sensi-tivities(84.6%and 69.2%,respectively)and specifici-ties(both 100%)in distinguishing biopsies with metastasis to LN from biopsies without metastasis to LN.CONCLUSION:miR-212 and miR-195 could be independent biomarkers in predicting the gastric cancer with metastasis to LN.
