Wheat is the second most important cereal crop in Bangladesh and production is highly sensitive to variations in the environment. We estimate productivity and energy efficiency of wheat farming in ...Bangladesh by applying a stochastic production frontier approach while accounting for the environmental constraints affecting production. Wheat farming is energy efficient with a net energy balance of 20,596 MJ per ha and energy ratio of 2.34. Environmental constraints such as a combination of unsuitable land, weed and pest attack, bad weather, planting delay and infertile soils significantly reduce wheat production and its energy efficiency. Environmental constraints account for a mean energy efficiency of 3 percentage points. Mean technical efficiency is 88% thereby indicating that elimination of inefficiencies can increase wheat energy output by 12%. Farmers' education, access to agricultural information and training in wheat production significantly improves efficiency, whereas events such as a delay in planting and first fertilization significantly reduce it. Policy recommendations include development of varieties that are resistant to environmental constraints and suitable for marginal areas; improvement of wheat farming practices; and investments in education and training of farmers as well as dissemination of information.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems, are a popular alternative to conventional nicotine cigarettes, both among smokers and those who have never ...smoked. In spite of the widespread use of e-cigarettes and the proposed detrimental cardiac and atherosclerotic effects of nicotine, the effects of e-cigarettes on these systems are not known. In this study, we investigated the cardiovascular and cardiac effects of e-cigarettes with and without nicotine in apolipoprotein-E knockout (ApoE
) mice. We developed an e-cigarette exposure model that delivers nicotine in a manner similar to that of human e-cigarettes users. Using commercially available e-cigarettes, bluCig PLUS, ApoE
mice were exposed to saline, e-cigarette without nicotine e-cigarette (0%), and e-cigarette with 2.4% nicotine e-cigarette (2.4%) aerosol for 12 wk. Echocardiographic data show that mice treated with e-cigarette (2.4%) had decreased left ventricular fractional shortening and ejection fraction compared with e-cigarette (0%) and saline. Ventricular transcriptomic analysis revealed changes in genes associated with metabolism, circadian rhythm, and inflammation in e-cigarette (2.4%)-treated ApoE
mice. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that cardiomyocytes of mice treated with e-cigarette (2.4%) exhibited ultrastructural abnormalities indicative of cardiomyopathy. Additionally, we observed increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial DNA mutations in mice treated with e-cigarette (2.4%). ApoE
mice on e-cigarette (2.4%) had also increased atherosclerotic lesions compared with saline aerosol-treated mice. These results demonstrate adverse effects of e-cigarettes on cardiac function in mice.
The present study is the first to show that mice exposed to nicotine electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have decreased cardiac fractional shortening and ejection fraction in comparison with controls. RNA-seq analysis reveals a proinflammatory phenotype induced by e-cigarettes with nicotine. We also found increased atherosclerosis in the aortic root of mice treated with e-cigarettes with nicotine. Our results show that e-cigarettes with nicotine lead to detrimental effects on the heart that should serve as a warning to e-cigarette users and agencies that regulate them.
Background and Objective: Researchers have identified neck circumference (NC) as a valuable tool to detect obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS). We conducted this study to define cutoffs of NC to ...identify obesity, abdominal obesity, and MS in adult women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: Adult women newly diagnosed with PCOS using the revised Rotterdam criteria having NC measure data in a cross-sectional study titled "Biochemical and Hormonal Profile of Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome" were analyzed. Results: Finally, 200 women were analyzed; their mean age was 23.3 (±4.9) years, body mass index (BMI) 26.47 (±5.09) kg/m2, NC 34.6 (±3.04) cm, waist circumference (WC) 88.18 (±11.98) cm, and visceral adiposity index (VAI) was 3.31 (±1.37). NC had positive correlations with age, BMI, WC, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum triglyceride, VAI, and testosterone levels. NC cutoff 32.75 cm showed 87.3% sensitivity and 74.4% specificity in detecting abdominal obesity (AUC 0.889, P < 0.001) and 88.0% sensitivity and 68.0% specificity for diagnosis of overweight/obesity (AUC 0.877, P < 0.001). NC 34.25 cm showed 63.0% sensitivity and 64.0% specificity for diagnosis of MS (AUC 0.681, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Neck circumference may be a simple and convenient tool in assessing obesity, central obesity, and MS in women with PCOS.
In spite of the widespread use of electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, and the proposed adverse cardiac effects of nicotine, the detrimental effects of e-cigarettes on the heart are not ...well known. This study examines the detrimental effects of e-cigarettes with nicotine at doses that yield circulating nicotine and cotinine in the ranges similar to the levels found in habitual smokers, and a high fat diet (HFD) on cardiac structure and function in a commonly used model of diet-induced obesity (DIO). C57BL/6J mice on an HFD were exposed to e-cigarette in the presence (2.4% nicotine) or absence (0% nicotine) of nicotine and saline aerosol for 12 weeks. Echocardiographic data demonstrated a decrease in left ventricular (LV) fractional shortening, LV ejection fraction, and velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (VCF) in mice treated with e-cigarette (2.4% nicotine) compared to e-cigarette (0% nicotine) or saline exposed mice. Cardiomyocytes (CMs) of mice treated with e-cigarette (2.4% nicotine) exhibited LV abnormalities, including lipid accumulation (ventricular steatosis), myofibrillar derangement and destruction, and mitochondrial hypertrophy, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The detrimental effects of e-cigarettes (2.4% nicotine) on cardiac structure and function was accompanied by increased oxidative stress, plasma free fatty acid levels, CM apoptosis, and inactivation of AMP-activated protein kinase and activation of its downstream target, acetyl-CoA-carboxylase. Our results indicate profound adverse effects of e-cigarettes (2.4% nicotine) on the heart in obese mice and raise questions about the safety of the nicotine e-cigarettes use.
In the future, when fossil fuels are exhausted, alternative energy sources will be essential for everyday needs. Hydrogen-based energy can play a vital role in this aspect. This energy is green, ...clean, and renewable. Electrochemical hydrogen devices have been used extensively in nuclear power plants to manage hydrogen-based renewable fuel. Doped zirconate materials are commonly used as an electrolyte in these electrochemical devices. These materials have excellent physical stability and high proton transport numbers, which make them suitable for multiple applications. Doping enhances the physical and electronic properties of zirconate materials and makes them ideal for practical applications. This review highlights the applications of zirconate-based proton-conducting materials in electrochemical cells, particularly in tritium monitors, tritium recovery, hydrogen sensors, and hydrogen pump systems. The central section of this review summarizes recent investigations and provides a comprehensive insight into the various doping schemes, experimental setup, instrumentation, optimum operating conditions, morphology, composition, and performance of zirconate electrolyte materials. In addition, different challenges that are hindering zirconate materials from achieving their full potential in electrochemical hydrogen devices are discussed. Finally, this paper lays out a few pathways for aspirants who wish to undertake research in this field.

In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised model-namely, combine-all in semi-supervised learning (C
SL)-to demonstrate the power of a simple combination of a disentanglement block, variational autoencoder (VAE), generative adversarial network (GAN), and a conditioning layer-based reconstructor for performing two important tasks in medical imaging: segmentation and reconstruction. Our work is motivated by the recent progress in image segmentation using semi-supervised learning (SSL), which has shown good results with limited labeled data and large amounts of unlabeled data. A disentanglement block decomposes an input image into a domain-invariant spatial factor and a domain-specific non-spatial factor. We assume that medical images acquired using multiple scanners (different domain information) share a common spatial space but differ in non-spatial space (intensities, contrast, etc.). Hence, we utilize our spatial information to generate segmentation masks from unlabeled datasets using a generative adversarial network (GAN). Finally, to reconstruct the original image, our conditioning layer-based reconstruction block recombines spatial information with random non-spatial information sampled from the generative models. Our ablation study demonstrates the benefits of disentanglement in holding domain-invariant (spatial) as well as domain-specific (non-spatial) information with high accuracy. We further apply a structured
similarity
loss along with a mutual information minimizer (MIM) to improve the adversarially trained generative models for better reconstruction. Experimental results achieved on the STACOM 2017 ACDC cine cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) dataset suggest that our proposed (C
SL) model outperforms fully supervised and semi-supervised models, achieving an 83.2% performance accuracy even when using only 1% labeled data. We hypothesize that our proposed model has the potential to become an efficient semantic segmentation tool that may be used for domain adaptation in data-limited medical imaging scenarios, where annotations are expensive. Code, and experimental configurations will be made available publicly.
The genesis of novel influenza viruses through reassortment poses a continuing risk to public health. This is of particular concern in Bangladesh, where highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses of ...the A(H5N1) subtype are endemic and cocirculate with other influenza viruses. Active surveillance of avian influenza viruses in Bangladeshi live poultry markets detected three A(H5) genotypes, designated H5N1-R1, H5N1-R2, and H5N2-R3, that arose from reassortment of A(H5N1) clade 2.3.2.1a viruses. The H5N1-R1 and H5N1-R2 viruses contained HA, NA, and M genes from the A(H5N1) clade 2.3.2.1a viruses and PB2, PB1, PA, NP, and NS genes from other Eurasian influenza viruses. H5N2-R3 viruses contained the HA gene from circulating A(H5N1) clade 2.3.2.1a viruses, NA and M genes from concurrently circulating A(H9N2) influenza viruses, and PB2, PB1, PA, NP, and NS genes from other Eurasian influenza viruses. Representative viruses of all three genotypes and a parental clade 2.3.2.1a strain (H5N1-R0) infected and replicated in mice without prior adaptation; the H5N2-R3 virus replicated to the highest titers in the lung. All viruses efficiently infected and killed chickens. All viruses replicated in inoculated ferrets, but no airborne transmission was detected, and only H5N2-R3 showed limited direct-contact transmission. Our findings demonstrate that although the A(H5N1) viruses circulating in Bangladesh have the capacity to infect and replicate in mammals, they show very limited capacity for transmission. However, reassortment does generate viruses of distinct phenotypes.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have circulated continuously in Bangladesh since 2007, and active surveillance has detected viral evolution driven by mutation and reassortment. Recently, three genetically distinct A(H5N1) reassortant viruses were detected in live poultry markets in Bangladesh. Currently, we cannot assign pandemic risk by only sequencing viruses; it must be conducted empirically. We found that the H5Nx highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses exhibited high virulence in mice and chickens, and one virus had limited capacity to transmit between ferrets, a property considered consistent with a higher zoonotic risk.
Influenza virological surveillance was conducted in Bangladesh from January to December 2021 in live poultry markets (LPMs) and in Tanguar Haor, a wetland region where domestic ducks have frequent ...contact with migratory birds. The predominant viruses circulating in LPMs were low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2 and clade 2.3.2.1a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses. Additional LPAIs were found in both LPM (H4N6) and Tanguar Haor wetlands (H7N7). Genetic analyses of these LPAIs strongly suggested long-distance movement of viruses along the Central Asian migratory bird flyway. We also detected a novel clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 virus from ducks in free-range farms in Tanguar Haor that was similar to viruses first detected in October 2020 in The Netherlands but with a different PB2. Identification of clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI H5N1 viruses in Tanguar Haor provides continued support of the role of migratory birds in transboundary movement of influenza A viruses (IAV), including HPAI viruses. Domestic ducks in free range farm in wetland areas, like Tangua Haor, serve as a conduit for the introduction of LPAI and HPAI viruses into Bangladesh. Clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have dominated in many regions of the world since mid-2021, and it remains to be seen if these viruses will replace the endemic clade 2.3.2.1a H5N1 viruses in Bangladesh.
The present effort was to obtain extracts from various fruit by-products using three extraction systems and to evaluate their polyphenolic content, antioxidant, and α-glucosidase inhibition activity. ...The fruit by-products were pre-processed by washing, drying, and milling methods to produce the powder. The powder samples were used to obtain extracts using pressurized hot-water (PHWE), enzyme-assisted (EnE) and organic solvent extraction (OSE) systems. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibition activity in all samples were assessed by Folin-Ciocalteu, AlCl

and α-glucosidase inhibitory methods. The results showed that the extracts of peel, seed and other by-products exhibited outstanding TPC, TFC, and strongest antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibition activity, eventually higher than edible parts of the fruits. For instance, the highest TPC among the peels of various fruits were in mango peel (in all cultivar) followed by litchi peel, banana peel cv. sagor, jackfruit peel, pineapple peel, papaya peel, banana peel cv. malbhog and desi on average in all tested extraction systems. PHWE system yielded significantly (
p
< 0.05) higher TPC and TFC than other extraction systems. In case of misribhog mango variety, the TPC (mg GAE/g DM) in peels were 180.12 ± 7.33, 73.52 ± 2.91 and 36.10 ± 3.48, and in seeds were 222.62 ± 12.11, 76.18 ± 2.63 and 42.83 ± 12.52 for PHWE, EnE and OSE respectively. This work reported the promising potential of underutilized fruit by-products as new sources to manufacture ingredients and nutraceuticals for foods and pharmaceutical products.
