In this paper, an adaptive energy management strategy (AEMS) under model predictive control (MPC) framework is proposed. The main advantage of the AEMS is that it fully integrates the economy driving ...pro system (EDPS), which can provide the renewable energy consumption trajectory considering dynamic traffic information of target driving task, namely the state of charge (SOC) reference constraint for the MPC optimal calculation at each control step. Moreover, based on the dynamically updated traffic information, the SOC reference constraint will be re-planned with correction, which will further reflect the ideal energy consumption trend over the actual driving cycle. For the MPC prediction aspect, the deep neural network (DNN) is applied in this paper to predict the future short-term velocity with 5s, 10s and 15s horizon, respectively. Meanwhile, the dynamic programming (DP) is applied to calculate the optimal energy distribution at each MPC control step. Simulation results show that under the test driving cycle, the optimal MPC predictive horizon with the assistance of EDPS is 10s, and the fuel economy rate can improve up to 6.48% compared with energy management without the assistance of EDPS. Moreover, the HIL test indicates the AEMS has well real-time performance as well.

An adaptive H infinity filter approach is proposed to estimate the multistates including state of charge (SOC) and state of energy (SOE) for a lithium-ion battery pack. In the proposed approach, the ...covariance matching technique is used to adaptively update the covariance of system and observation noises and the recursive least square method is used to identify the battery model parameters in real time. The hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform for battery charge/discharge is set up to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the SOC and the SOE estimation and compare the proposed approach with the multistate estimators using an extended Kalman filter and an H infinity filter. The experimental results indicate that the adaptive H infinity filter-based estimator is able to estimate the battery states in real time with the highest accuracy among the three filters.
Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of lithium-ion batteries can assess the battery reliability to determine the advent of failure and mitigate battery risk. The existing RUL prediction techniques ...for lithium-ion batteries are inefficient for learning the long-term dependencies among the capacity degradations. This paper investigates deep-learning-enabled battery RUL prediction. The long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) is employed to learn the long-term dependencies among the degraded capacities of lithium-ion batteries. The LSTM RNN is adaptively optimized using the resilient mean square back-propagation method, and a dropout technique is used to address the overfitting problem. The developed LSTM RNN is able to capture the underlying long-term dependencies among the degraded capacities and construct an explicitly capacity-oriented RUL predictor, whose long-term learning performance is contrasted to the support vector machine model, the particle filter model, and the simple RNN model. Monte Carlo simulation is combined to generate a probabilistic RUL prediction. Experimental data from multiple lithium-ion cells at two different temperatures is deployed for model construction, verification, and comparison. The developed method is able to predict the battery's RUL independent of offline training data, and when some offline data is available, the RUL can be predicted earlier than in the traditional methods.
Battery technology is the bottleneck of the electric vehicles (EVs). It is important, both in theory and practical application, to do research on the modeling and state estimation of batteries, which ...is essential to optimizing energy management, extending the life cycle, reducing cost, and safeguarding the safe application of batteries in EVs. However, the batteries, with strong time-variables and nonlinear characteristics, are further influenced by such random factors such as driving loads, operational conditions, in the application of EVs. The real-time, accurate estimation of their state is challenging. The classification of the estimation methodologies for estimating state-of-charge (SoC) of battery focusing with the estimation method/algorithm, advantages, drawbacks, and estimation error are systematically and separately discussed. Especially for the battery packs existing of the inevitable inconsistency in cell capacity, resistance and voltage, the advanced characterizing monomer selection, and bias correction-based method has been described and discussed. The review also presents the key feedback factors that are indispensable for accurate estimation of battery SoC, it will be helpful for ensuring the SoC estimation accuracy. It will be very helpful for choosing an appropriate method to develop a reliable and safe battery management system and energy management strategy of the EVs. Finally, the paper also highlights a number of key factors and challenges, and presents the possible recommendations for the development of next generation of smart SoC estimation and battery management systems for electric vehicles and battery energy storage system.
An accurate State-of-Charge (SoC) estimation plays a significant role in battery systems used in electric vehicles due to the arduous operation environments and the requirement of ensuring safe and ...reliable operations of batteries. Among the conventional methods to estimate SoC, the Coulomb counting method is widely used, but its accuracy is limited due to the accumulated error. Another commonly used method is model-based online iterative estimation with the Kalman filters, which improves the estimation accuracy in some extent. To improve the performance of Kalman filters in SoC estimation, the adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF), which employs the covariance matching approach, is applied in this paper. First, we built an implementation flowchart of the AEKF for a general system. Second, we built an online open-circuit voltage (OCV) estimation approach with the AEKF algorithm so that we can then get the SoC estimate by looking up the OCV-SoC table. Third, we proposed a robust online model-based SoC estimation approach with the AEKF algorithm. Finally, an evaluation on the SoC estimation approaches is performed by the experiment approach from the aspects of SoC estimation accuracy and robustness. The results indicate that the proposed online SoC estimation with the AEKF algorithm performs optimally, and for different error initial values, the maximum SoC estimation error is less than 2% with close-loop state estimation characteristics.

Accurate estimations of battery parameter and state play an important role in promoting the commercialization of electric vehicles. This paper tries to make three contributions to the existing literatures through advanced time scale separation algorithm. (1) A lumped parameter battery model was improved for achieving accurate voltage estimate against different battery aging levels through an electrochemical equation, which has enhanced the relationship of battery voltage to its State-of-Charge (SoC) and capacity. (2) A multi-scale extended Kalman filtering was proposed and employed to execute the online measured data driven-based battery parameter and SoC estimation with dual time scales in regarding that the slow-varying characteristic on battery parameter and fast-varying characteristic on battery SoC, thus the battery parameter was estimated with macro scale and battery SoC was estimated with micro scale. (3) The accurate estimate of battery capacity and SoC were obtained in real-time through a data-driven multi-scale extended Kalman filtering algorithm. Experimental results on various degradation states of lithium-ion polymer battery cells further verified the feasibility of the proposed approach.
In order for the battery management system (BMS) in an electric vehicle to function properly, accurate and robust indication of the energy state of the lithium-ion batteries is necessary. This ...robustness requires that the energy state can be estimated accurately even when the working conditions of batteries change dramatically. This paper implements battery remaining available energy prediction and state-of-charge (SOC) estimation against testing temperature uncertainties, as well as inaccurate initial SOC values. A double-scale particle filtering method has been developed to estimate or predict the system state and parameters on two different time scales. The developed method considers the slow time-varying characteristics of the battery parameter set and the quick time-varying characteristics of the battery state set. In order to select the preferred battery model, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) is used to make a tradeoff between the model prediction accuracy and complexity. To validate the developed double-scale particle filtering method, two different kinds of lithium-ion batteries were tested at three temperatures. The experimental results show that, with 20% initial SOC deviation, the maximum remaining available energy prediction and SOC estimation errors are both within 2%, even when the wrong temperature is indicated. In this case, the developed double-scale particle filtering method is expected to be robust in practice.

Battery model plays an important role in the simulation of electric vehicles (EVs) and states estimation of the batteries in the development of the model-based battery management system. To build a battery model with enough precision and suitable complexity, firstly this paper summarizes the seven representative battery models, which belong to the simplified electrochemical models or the equivalent circuit models. Then the model equations are built and the model parameters are identified with an online parameter identification method. The battery test bench is built and the experiment schedule is designed. Finally an evaluation is performed on the seven battery models by an experiment approach from the aspects of the estimation accuracy of the terminal voltages. To evaluate the effect of the number of RC networks on the model’s precision, the battery general equivalent circuit models (GECMs) with different RC networks are also discussed further. The results indicate the equivalent circuit model with two RC networks, the DP model, has an optimal performance.
An adaptive Kalman filter algorithm is adopted to estimate the state of charge (SOC) of a lithium-ion battery for application in electric vehicles (EVs). Generally, the Kalman filter algorithm is ...selected to dynamically estimate the SOC. However, it easily causes divergence due to the uncertainty of the battery model and system noise. To obtain a better convergent and robust result, an adaptive Kalman filter algorithm that can greatly improve the dependence of the traditional filter algorithm on the battery model is employed. In this paper, the typical characteristics of the lithium-ion battery are analyzed by experiment, such as hysteresis, polarization, Coulomb efficiency, etc. In addition, an improved Thevenin battery model is achieved by adding an extra RC branch to the Thevenin model, and model parameters are identified by using the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm. Further, an adaptive EKF (AEKF) algorithm is adopted to the SOC estimation of the lithium-ion battery. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated by experiments with federal urban driving schedules. The proposed SOC estimation using AEKF is more accurate and reliable than that using EKF. The comparison shows that the maximum SOC estimation error decreases from 14.96% to 2.54% and that the mean SOC estimation error reduces from 3.19% to 1.06%.
To improve the use of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicle (EV) applications, evaluations and comparisons of different equivalent circuit models are presented in this paper. Based on an analysis ...of the traditional lithium-ion battery equivalent circuit models such as the Rint, RC, Thevenin and PNGV models, an improved Thevenin model, named dual polarization (DP) model, is put forward by adding an extra RC to simulate the electrochemical polarization and concentration polarization separately. The model parameters are identified with a genetic algorithm, which is used to find the optimal time constant of the model, and the experimental data from a Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) test on a LiMn2O4 battery module. Evaluations on the five models are carried out from the point of view of the dynamic performance and the state of charge (SoC) estimation. The dynamic performances of the five models are obtained by conducting the Dynamic Stress Test (DST) and the accuracy of SoC estimation with the Robust Extended Kalman Filter (REKF) approach is determined by performing a Federal Urban Driving Schedules (FUDS) experiment. By comparison, the DP model has the best dynamic performance and provides the most accurate SoC estimation. Finally, sensitivity of the different SoC initial values is investigated based on the accuracy of SoC estimation with the REKF approach based on the DP model. It is clear that the errors resulting from the SoC initial value are significantly reduced and the true SoC is convergent within an acceptable error.
