Terren Moore never planned to become a farmer. He signed up for an agriculture class to fulfill his high school elective requirement, hoping to simply get the credit he needed to graduate. It didn't ...take long for Moore to transition from an inexperienced agriculture student to FFA member to first-generation farmer. Moore started growing peas in a small backyard patch in his hometown of Winona, Texas. When he shared some of his harvest at an FFA meeting, he felt an enormous sense of satisfaction seeing teachers, parents, and students enjoying the produce he grew, and it solidified his desire to farm. After he graduated in 2017, Moore experimented with roles as an extension agent and seed sales representative but neither provided the satisfaction or earning potential he desired. Texas Farm Bureau offered Moore a job as an insurance agent in Greenville, Texas, and he jumped at the chance to work in a role that combined his interests in agriculture and sales.

Blue Bottle coffee buyer Charlie Habegger paid a premium for the beans - $60 per pound compared with $20 per pound for Hawaiian-grown beans and $5 per pound (or less) for coffee beans imported from ...Ethiopia - and introduced it in cafes in California, New York, Boston, Miami and Washington, D.C. A single cup sold for $18. ...relative to all of the other things we're willing to spend $18 on - like a glass of wine or small-batch bourbon - investing in the memorable flavor experience of a great cup of coffee is worth it." Even though the number of California coffee growers is expanding rapidly, Gaskell is confident that the drink's continued status as a specialty crop will keep prices stable for farmers.
A study published last month in the journal Ecology examined assessed how environmental conditions impacted the growth of more than 1,000 sugar maple trees at four forest sites in Michigan between ...1994 and 2013. Lead researcher Inés Ibáñez, ecology professor at the University of Michigan, used climate modeling to forecast the fate of sugar maples if nothing is done to curb greenhouse gas emissions. A sugar maple tree trunk must be at least 10 inches in diameter at chest height to be tapped; trees over 15 inches in diameter can accommodate two taps; four taps can be installed in trees over 25 inches in diameter, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The pair discovered that the sugars in almost-stale bread, bagels and cakes destined for the landfill could be distilled into premium vodka, turning imbibing into an act of social responsibility. The ...fruit juice is the base of the cocktail; peels are packed in sugar to add flavor; and the leftover hulls are put into a still to make syrup. To extend the shelf life of common perishable cocktail ingredients like fruits and vegetables, bar manager Rob Hamic often dehydrates, salt cures and pickles overripe produce, making shrubs and preserves that add flavor to craft cocktails.
The interest is so strong -- the loose-leaf black, green and oolong teas sell out within weeks of spring production -- that Elizabeth Miller and her husband, Chris Jenkins, planted 12 additional ...acres of Camellia sinensis in 2016 and plan to plant 8 more acres this spring. Table Rock Tea Co. sells a box of 20 tea bags for $6.95; 5 grams of tea -- enough for about two cups of tea -- sells for $3.95 through Minto Island Tea Co. "Early on, when production was limited to just a handful of farms producing a few pounds of tea a year, the value was in the novelty; the sheer rarity of U.S. grown tea justified the high price," says Tulali.
