Occupant presence and behaviour in buildings has been shown to have large impact on heating, cooling and ventilation demand, energy consumption of lighting and appliances, and building controls. Energy-unaware behaviour can add one-third to a building's designed energy performance. Consequently, user activity and behaviour is considered as a key element and has long been used for control of various devices such as artificial light, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. However, how are user activity and behaviour taken into account? What are the most valuable activities or behaviours and what is their impact on energy saving potential? In order to answer these questions, we provide a novel survey of prominent international intelligent buildings research efforts with the theme of energy saving and user activity recognition. We devise new metrics to compare the existing studies. Through the survey, we determine the most valuable activities and behaviours and their impact on energy saving potential for each of the three main subsystems, i.e., HVAC, light, and plug loads. The most promising and appropriate activity recognition technologies and approaches are discussed thus allowing us to conclude with principles and perspectives for energy intelligent buildings based on user activity.

At the resonant frequency of 174.4 kHz, this sensor exhibits the record sensitivity of 5.426 V/A as compared to variety of devices such as the CMC ME sensor family, fluxgate, magnetoresistive, and Hall-effect-based devices. It opens a potential to commercialize a new generation of ME-based current and (or) vortex magnetic sensors.
This paper designs a simple model reference adaptive control based speed controller (MRAC-SC) for a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor drive. The proposed adaptive scheme is designed ...to track a reference model that ensures the desired exponential decay of a controlled speed error trajectory. Also, the proposed MRAC method includes an adaptive compensating control term and a stabilizing feedback control term. The former is proposed to compensate for uncertain model parameters (i.e., inertia, friction, and load torque) and the latter is constructed to asymptotically stabilize the error dynamics. The asymptotic stability of the closed loop is guaranteed with both control terms using the Lyapunov approach. The comparative studies between the proposed MRAC-SC, the nonadaptive model reference speed controller, and the conventional proportional-integral SC are performed to justify a fast transient response, a good tracking possibility, and robustness against the parameter uncertainties of the proposed MRAC technique.
Child maltreatment remains a major health threat globally that requires the understanding of socioeconomic and cultural contexts to craft effective interventions. However, little is known about ...research agendas globally and the development of knowledge-producing networks in this field of study. This study aims to explore the bibliometric overview on child maltreatment publications to understand their growth from 1916 to 2018. Data from the Web of Science Core Collection were collected in May 2018. Only research articles and reviews written in the English language were included, with no restrictions by publication date. We analyzed publication years, number of papers, journals, authors, keywords and countries, and presented the countries collaboration and co-occurrence keywords analysis. From 1916 to 2018, 47,090 papers (53.0% in 2010⁻2018) were published in 9442 journals. Child Abuse & Neglect (2576 papers; 5.5%); Children and Youth Services Review (1130 papers; 2.4%) and Pediatrics (793 papers, 1.7%) published the most papers. The most common research areas were Psychology (16,049 papers, 34.1%), Family Studies (8225 papers, 17.5%), and Social Work (7367 papers, 15.6%). Among 192 countries with research publications, the most prolific countries were the United States (26,367 papers), England (4676 papers), Canada (3282 papers) and Australia (2664 papers). We identified 17 authors who had more than 60 scientific items. The most cited papers (with at least 600 citations) were published in 29 journals, headed by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (7 papers) and the Lancet (5 papers). This overview of global research in child maltreatment indicated an increasing trend in this topic, with the world's leading centers located in the Western countries led by the United States. We called for interdisciplinary research approaches to evaluating and intervening on child maltreatment, with a focus on low-middle income countries (LMICs) settings and specific contexts.
Despite their promise, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)-based assays for multi-cancer early detection face challenges in test performance, due mostly to the limited abundance of ctDNA and its inherent ...variability. To address these challenges, published assays to date demanded a very high-depth sequencing, resulting in an elevated price of test. Herein, we developed a multimodal assay called SPOT-MAS (screening for the presence of tumor by methylation and size) to simultaneously profile methylomics, fragmentomics, copy number, and end motifs in a single workflow using targeted and shallow genome-wide sequencing (~0.55×) of cell-free DNA. We applied SPOT-MAS to 738 non-metastatic patients with breast, colorectal, gastric, lung, and liver cancer, and 1550 healthy controls. We then employed machine learning to extract multiple cancer and tissue-specific signatures for detecting and locating cancer. SPOT-MAS successfully detected the five cancer types with a sensitivity of 72.4% at 97.0% specificity. The sensitivities for detecting early-stage cancers were 73.9% and 62.3% for stages I and II, respectively, increasing to 88.3% for non-metastatic stage IIIA. For tumor-of-origin, our assay achieved an accuracy of 0.7. Our study demonstrates comparable performance to other ctDNA-based assays while requiring significantly lower sequencing depth, making it economically feasible for population-wide screening.
Central nervous system (CNS) infection is a serious neurologic condition, although the etiology remains unknown in >50% of patients. We used metagenomic next-generation sequencing to detect viruses ...in 204 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with acute CNS infection who were enrolled from Vietnam hospitals during 2012-2016. We detected 8 viral species in 107/204 (52.4%) of CSF samples. After virus-specific PCR confirmation, the detection rate was lowered to 30/204 (14.7%). Enteroviruses were the most common viruses detected (n = 23), followed by hepatitis B virus (3), HIV (2), molluscum contagiosum virus (1), and gemycircularvirus (1). Analysis of enterovirus sequences revealed the predominance of echovirus 30 (9). Phylogenetically, the echovirus 30 strains belonged to genogroup V and VIIb. Our results expanded knowledge about the clinical burden of enterovirus in Vietnam and underscore the challenges of identifying a plausible viral pathogen in CSF of patients with CNS infections.
Youths and adolescents are vulnerable to HIV/STIs from unprotected sex. Promotion of young population's awareness about risky sexual behaviors is essential to develop contextualized interventions. A ...cross-sectional study was conducted in five Vietnamese provinces to document current attitudes and practices regarding sexual behaviors among youths. The information on sociodemographic characteristics, substance use, and sexual behaviors was collected via self-reported questionnaires. The factors associated with risky sexual behaviors were identified by the multivariate logistic regression. Among the 1200 participants, 73.5% reported having sex in their lifetime, and 48.1% used condoms at their latest sexual intercourse. Participants in urban areas were more likely not to intend to use condoms and had a higher unintended pregnancy rate than in rural areas. Older age was positively associated with not wanting to use and not using condoms. Substance-using participants were more likely to not use condoms. The participants taking alcohol or other stimulants before sex had a higher likelihood of unintended pregnancy. Respondents' attitudes and practices regarding sexual behaviors were associated with gender and employment. This study indicated that young population's awareness in Vietnam is high, however, risky sexual behaviors also remain common. Sex-related educational programs about the consequences of substance use, multiple sex partners, and unprotected sex should be developed.
Studies performed worldwide show excessive Internet use could have a negative impact on health. However, Internet use studies in Vietnam are limited. In this study, we reported a high prevalence of ...frequent Internet usage among Vietnamese youth between 16 and 30 years old. Of 1200 participants, almost 65% reported using the Internet daily. Moreover, 34.3% of the participants reported feeling anxious or uncomfortable after not using the Internet for one day irrespective of their gender, and 40% believed using the Internet frequently did not affect their health. Of those, there was a higher proportion of women than men that held this belief (42.1% vs. 35.9%, respectively, p = .03). In this cohort, undergraduate students were more likely than blue-collar workers to believe that frequent Internet use could affect health. Yet, undergraduate OR = 1.50, 95%CI = (1.08, 2.09), p < .05) and high school students (OR = 1.54, 95%CI = 1.00, 2.37), p < .1) were more likely than blue collar workers to feel anxious or uncomfortable after a day without the Internet. Participants in urban areas were more than twice as likely than those from rural areas to believe the Internet did not affect their health (OR = 0.60, 95%CI = (0.41,0.89), p < .01). Lastly, participants between 16 and 18 years old were less likely to believe in the negative impact of the Internet on health than older participants. A better understanding of factors underlying high Internet usage and low perception of its health effects among Vietnamese youth might help develop better intervention strategies for Internet Use Disorder and other Technology Related Use Disorders.

Monitoring the distribution of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the vascular system is an important task for the advancement of precision therapeutics and drug delivery. Despite active targeting ...using active motilities, it is required to visualize the position and concentration of carriers that reach the target, to promote the development of this technology. In this work, a feasibility study is presented on a tomographic scanner that allows monitoring of the injected carriers quantitatively in a relatively short interval. The device is based on a small-animal-scale asymmetric magnetic platform integrated with magnetic particle imaging technology. An optimized isotropic field-free region (FFR) generation method using a magnetic manipulation system (MMS) is derived and numerically investigated. The in-vitro and in-vivo tracking performances are demonstrated with a high position accuracy of approximately 1 mm. A newly proposed tracking method was developed, specialized in vascular system, with quick scanning time (about 1s). In this paper, the primary function of the proposed system is to track magnetic particles using a magnetic manipulation system. Through this, proposed method enables the conventional magnetic actuation systems to upgrade the functionalities of both manipulation and localization of magnetic objects.

Manganese dioxide nanomaterials have wide applications in many areas from catalysis and Li–ion batteries to gas sensing. Understanding the crystallization pathways, morphologies, and formation of ...defects in their structure is particularly important but still a challenging issue. Herein, we employed an arsenal of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), neutron diffraction, positron annihilation spectroscopies, and ab initio calculations to investigate the evolution of the morphology and structure of α-MnO2 nanomaterials prepared via reduction of KMnO4 solution with C2H5OH prior to being annealed in air at 200–600 °C. We explored a novel evolution that α-MnO2 nucleation can be formed even at room temperature and gradually developed to α-MnO2 nanorods at above 500 °C. We also found the existence of H+ or K+ ions in the 1 × 1 tunnels of α-MnO2 and observed the simultaneous presence of Mn and O vacancies in α-MnO2 crystals at low temperatures. Increasing the temperature removed these O vacancies, leaving only the Mn vacancies in the samples.
