Microenvironment, such as hypoxia common to cancer, plays a critical role in the epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) program, which is a major route of cancer metastasis and confers ...γ‐radiation resistance to cells. Herein, we showed that transgelin 2 (TAGLN2), an actin‐binding protein, is significantly induced in hypoxic lung cancer cells and that Snail1 is simultaneously increased, which induces EMT by downregulating E‐cadherin expression. Forced TAGLN2 expression induced severe cell death; however, a small population of cells surviving after forced TAGLN2 overexpression showed γ‐radiation resistance, which might promote tumor relapse and recurrence. These surviving cells showed high metastatic activity with an increase of EMT markers including Snail1. In these cells, TAGLN2 activated the insulin‐like growth factor 1 receptor β (IGF1Rβ)/PI3K/AKT pathway by recruitment of focal adhesion kinase to the IGF1R signaling complex. Activation of the IGF1Rβ/PI3K/AKT pathway also induced inactivation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), which is involved in Snail1 stabilization. Therefore, both the IGF1Rβ inhibitor (AG1024) and the PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) or AKT inactivation with MK2206 lower the cellular level of Snail1. Involvement of GSK3β was also confirmed by treatment with lithium chloride, the inducer of GSK3β phosphorylation, or MG132, the 26S proteasomal inhibitor, which also stabilized Snail1. In conclusion, the present study provides important evidence that hypoxia‐inducible TAGLN2 is involved in the selection of cancer cells with enhanced EMT properties to overcome the detrimental environment of cancer cells.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to establish prediction models for the non-destructive evaluation of the carbonization characteristics of lignin-derived hydrochars as a carbon material in real ...time. Hydrochars are produced via the hydrothermal carbonization of kraft lignins for 1–5 h in the temperature range of 175–250 °C, and as the reaction severity of hydrothermal carbonization increases, the hydrochar is converted to a more carbon-intensive structure. Principal component analysis using near-infrared spectra suggests that the spectral regions at 2132 and 2267 nm assigned to lignins and 1449 nm assigned to phenolic groups of lignins are informative bands that indicate the carbonization degree. Partial least squares regression models trained with near-infrared spectra accurately predicts the carbon content, oxygen/carbon, and hydrogen/carbon ratios with high coefficients of determination and low root mean square errors. The established models demonstrate better prediction than ordinary least squares regression models.
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease that was recently identified in China, South Korea and Japan. The objective of the study was to evaluate the ...epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of SFTS in South Korea.
SFTS is a reportable disease in South Korea. We included all SFTS cases reported to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) from January 2013 to December 2015. Clinical information was gathered by reviewing medical records, and epidemiologic characteristics were analyzed using both KCDC surveillance data and patient medical records. Risk factors for mortality in patients with SFTS were assessed. A total of 172 SFTS cases were reported during the study period. SFTS occurred throughout the country, except in urban areas. Hilly areas in the eastern and southeastern regions and Jeju island (incidence, 1.26 cases /105 person-years) were the main endemic areas. The yearly incidence increased from 36 cases in 2013 to 81 cases in 2015. Most cases occurred from May to October. The overall case fatality ratio was 32.6%. The clinical progression was similar to the 3 phases reported in China: fever, multi-organ dysfunction, and convalescence. Confusion, elevated C-reactive protein, and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin times were associated with mortality in patients with SFTS. Two outbreaks of nosocomial SFTS transmission were observed.
SFTS is an endemic disease in South Korea, with a nationwide distribution and a high case-fatality ratio. Confusion, elevated levels of C-reactive protein, and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin times were associated with mortality in patients with SFTS.

Organosolv lignin was treated with ethanol at sub/supercritical temperatures (200, 275, and 350°C) for conversion to low molecular phenols under different reaction times (20, 40, and 60min), solvent-to-lignin ratios (50, 100, and 150mLg−1), and initial hydrogen gas pressures (2 and 3MPa). Essential lignin-degraded products, oil (liquid), char (solid), and gas were obtained, and their yields were directly influenced by reaction conditions. In particular, concurrent reactions involving depolymerization and recondensation as well as further (secondary) decomposition were significantly accelerated with increasing temperature, leading to both lignin-derived phenols in the oil fraction and undesirable products (char and gas).
As the main components in the oil fraction, oxygenated phenols, guaiacol, and syringol as well as their alkylated forms were detected. The yield of alkylated phenols showed a drastic increase at 350°C in the presence of initial hydrogen gas due to prevailing hydrodeoxygenation and hydrogenation reactions of the vinyl/allyl/oxygenated phenols. These reactions were also demonstrated indirectly from the results of atomic H/C and O/C of the oils. The highest amount of monomeric phenols released from lignin (1.0g) was measured as ca. 96.7mg at 350°C, 40min, 100mLg−1, and 3MPa of H2. In addition, GPC analysis suggested a possibility of condensation between lignin-degraded fragments during the solvolysis reaction.

When a drop is placed on a flat substrate tilted at an inclined angle, it can be deformed by gravity and its initial contact angle divides into front and rear contact angles by inclination. Here we ...study on evaporation dynamics of a pure water droplet on a flat solid substrate by controlling substrate inclination and measuring mass and volume changes of an evaporating droplet with time. We find that complete evaporation time of an inclined droplet becomes longer as gravitational influence by inclination becomes stronger. The gravity itself does not change the evaporation dynamics directly, whereas the gravity-induced droplet deformation increases the difference between front and rear angles, which quickens the onset of depinning and consequently reduces the contact radius. This result makes the evaporation rate of an inclined droplet to be slow. This finding would be important to improve understanding on evaporation dynamics of inclined droplets.
Although nanocellulose is an eco-friendly, high-performance raw material provided by nature, the agglomeration of nanocellulose that occurs during the drying process is the biggest obstacle to its ...advanced materialization and commercialization. In this study, a facile and simple nanocellulose drying system was designed using lignin, which is self-assembled together with cellulose in natural wood, as an eco-friendly additive. The addition of lignin not only minimized aggregation during the drying and dehydration process of nanocellulose but also ensured excellent redispersion kinetics and stability. In addition, the added lignin could be removed through a simple washing process. Through FTIR, XRD, TGA, tensile and swelling tests, it was confirmed that the addition of lignin enabled the reversible restitution of the nanocellulose physicochemical properties to the level of pristine never-dried nanocellulose in drying, redispersion, and polymer processing processes.

When designing this trial, there was no evidence that salvage chemotherapy (SLC) in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) resulted in substantial prolongation of survival when compared with best supportive ...care (BSC). However, SLC is often offered to pretreated patients with AGC for anecdotal reasons.
Patients with AGC with one or two prior chemotherapy regimens involving both fluoropyrimidines and platinum and with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (PS) 0 or 1 were randomly assigned in a ratio of 2:1 to SLC plus BSC or BSC alone. Choice of SLC-either docetaxel 60 mg/m(2) every 3 weeks or irinotecan 150 mg/m(2) every 2 weeks-was left to the discretion of investigators. Primary end point was overall survival (OS).
Median OS was 5.3 months among 133 patients in the SLC arm and 3.8 months among 69 patients in the BSC arm (hazard ratio, 0.657; 95% CI, 0.485 to 0.891; one-sided P = .007). OS benefit for SLC was consistent in most of the prospectively defined subgroups, including age, PS, number of prior treatments, metastatic sites, hemoglobin levels, and response to prior chemotherapy. SLC was generally well tolerated, and adverse events were similar in the SLC and BSC arms. We found no median OS difference between docetaxel and irinotecan (5.2 v 6.5 months; P = .116).
To our knowledge, this is the largest phase III trial comparing SLC plus BSC with BSC alone in AGC. In pretreated patients, SLC is tolerated and significantly improves OS when added to BSC.
This study investigated the feature importance of near-infrared spectra from random forest regression models constructed to predict the carbonization characteristics of hydrochars produced by ...hydrothermal carbonization of kraft lignin. The model achieved high coefficients of determination of 0.989, 0.988, and 0.985 with root mean square errors of 0.254, 0.003, and 0.008 when predicting the carbon content, atomic O/C ratio, and H/C ratio, respectively. The random forest models outperformed the multilayer perceptron models for all predictions. In the feature importance analysis, the spectral regions at 1600–1800 nm, the first overtone of C–H stretching vibrations, and 2000–2300 nm, the combination bands, were highly important for predicting the carbon content and O/C predictions, whereas the region at 1250–1711 nm contributed to predicting H/C. The random forest models trained with the high-importance regions achieved better prediction performances than those trained with the entire spectral range, demonstrating the usefulness of the feature importance yielded by the random forest and the feasibility of selective application of the spectral data.
Aberrant glutathione or Ca(2+) homeostasis due to oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. The Ca(2+)-permeable transient receptor potential cation (TRPC) ...channel is predominantly expressed in the brain, which is sensitive to oxidative stress. However, the role of the TRPC channel in neurodegeneration is not known. Here, we report a mechanism of TRPC5 activation by oxidants and the effect of glutathionylated TRPC5 on striatal neurons in Huntington's disease. Intracellular oxidized glutathione leads to TRPC5 activation via TRPC5 S-glutathionylation at Cys176/Cys178 residues. The oxidized glutathione-activated TRPC5-like current results in a sustained increase in cytosolic Ca(2+), activated calmodulin-dependent protein kinase and the calpain-caspase pathway, ultimately inducing striatal neuronal cell death. We observed an abnormal glutathione pool indicative of an oxidized state in the striatum of Huntington's disease transgenic (YAC128) mice. Increased levels of endogenous TRPC5 S-glutathionylation were observed in the striatum in both transgenic mice and patients with Huntington's disease. Both knockdown and inhibition of TRPC5 significantly attenuated oxidation-induced striatal neuronal cell death. Moreover, a TRPC5 blocker improved rearing behaviour in Huntington's disease transgenic mice and motor behavioural symptoms in littermate control mice by increasing striatal neuron survival. Notably, low levels of TRPC1 increased the formation of TRPC5 homotetramer, a highly Ca(2+)-permeable channel, and stimulated Ca(2+)-dependent apoptosis in Huntington's disease cells (STHdh(Q111/111)). Taken together, these novel findings indicate that increased TRPC5 S-glutathionylation by oxidative stress and decreased TRPC1 expression contribute to neuronal damage in the striatum and may underlie neurodegeneration in Huntington's disease.

TGA results indicated that the maximum decomposition temperature of the biomass decreased from 373.9 to 359.0°C with increasing potassium concentration. For fast pyrolysis, char yield of potassium impregnated biomass doubled regardless of pyrolysis temperature compared to demineralized one. The presence of potassium also affected bio-oil properties. Water content increased from 14.4 to 19.7wt% and viscosity decreased from 34 to 16.2cSt, but the pH value of the bio-oil remained stable. Gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) analysis revealed that potassium promoted thermochemical reactions, thus causing a decrease of levoglucosan and an increase of small molecules and lignin-derived phenols in bio-oil. Additionally, various forms of aromatic hydrocarbons, probably derived from lignins, were detected in non-condensed pyrolytic gas fractions.
