Day length is one of the most important factors that organisms use to predict seasonal changes in their environment. Several amphibians regulate their growth and development in response to ...photoperiod. However, many studies have not focused on the ecological effects of the photoperiodic response on growth and development because they use tropical animals, animals from a commercial source or from unknown localities, or extreme light regimens for experiments. In the present study, we examined the effects of photoperiod on growth and development in the clouded salamander (Hynobius nebulosus) by raising larvae under different photoperiods and at different temperatures in the laboratory. The average larval period under a long-day photoperiod of L16:D8 was longer than that under L12:D12 at 15°C or 20°C, although the difference between the photoperiods was only significant for 15°C. Juveniles weighed more at metamorphosis under L16:D8 than those under L12:D12, irrespective of temperature, suggesting that a longer developmental period results in a heavier body weight. The head width of juveniles did not differ for different photoperiods at either temperature. However, the growth rate of the head width under L12:D12 was faster than that under L16:D8 at 15°C. Long day length appears to produce larger H. nebulosus juveniles in a relatively stable aquatic environment with a low population density. Thus, development may be accelerated when the day length becomes shorter as winter approaches, and larvae may have increased the growth rate of their head widths to compensate for the shorter growing period under shorter day lengths.
Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2014-2015 season and ...characterized these objects. Our project has greatly improved the statistics of the distribution of orbital periods, which is a good approximation of the distribution of cataclysmic variables at the terminal evolutionary stage, and confirmed the presence of a period minimum at a period of 0.053 d and a period spike just above this period. The number density monotonically decreased toward the longer period and there was no strong indication of a period gap. We detected possible negative superhumps in Z Cha. It is possible that normal outbursts are also suppressed by the presence of a disk tilt in this system. There was no indication of enhanced orbital humps just preceding the superoutburst, and this result favors the thermal-tidal disk instability as the origin of superoutbursts. We detected superhumps in three AM CVn-type dwarf novae. Our observations and recent other detections suggest that 8% of objects showing dwarf nova-type outbursts are AM CVn-type objects. AM CVn-type objects and EI Psc-type object may be more abundant than previously recognized. OT J213806, a WZ Sge-type object, exhibited a remarkably different feature between the 2010 and 2014 superoutbursts. Although the 2014 superoutburst was much fainter the plateau phase was shorter than the 2010 one, the course of the rebrightening phase was similar. This object indicates that the O-C diagrams of superhumps can be indeed variable at least in WZ Sge-type objects. Four deeply eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf novae (ASASSN-13cx, ASASSN-14ag, ASASSN-15bu, NSV 4618) were identified. We studied long-term trends in supercycles in MM Hya and CY UMa and found systematic variations of supercycles of ~20%.
Background: Endometrial cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies. Because the findings mentioned in radiogram interpretation reports issued by diagnostic radiologists influence ...treatment strategies, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation results in clinically relevant settings. Methods: The clinical records of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer treated at Tohoku University Hospital from January 2012 to December 2021 were reviewed. The preoperative and pathologically estimated cancer stages were compared based on the results mentioned in the radiogram interpretation report. Results: The preoperative and postoperative cancer stages were concordant in 70.0% of the patients. By contrast, the cancer stage was underdiagnosed and overdiagnosed in 21.7% and 8.2% of the patients, respectively. The sensitivities of MRI for deep myometrial invasion, cervical stromal invasion, vaginal invasion, and adnexal metastasis were 65.1%, 58.2%, 33.3%, and 18.4%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for pelvic lymph node metastasis using a combination of CT and MRI were 40.9% and 98.4%, respectively. Those for para-aortic lymph node metastases using CT were 37.0% and 99.5%, respectively. Conclusions: The low sensitivity observed in this study clarified the limitations of preoperative diagnostic performance in current clinical practice.
With the rapidly aging population, the number of residents transferred to hospitals from long-term care facilities (LTCFs) is increasing globally. The objective of this study was to investigate the ...association between family involvement and an advance directive (AD) for not hospitalizing and hospital transfers among LTCF residents with dementia.
Using the InterRAI assessment database from September 2014 to June 2019, we included 874 residents from 16 LTCFs in Japan.
Of the 874 participants, 19.0% had an AD for not hospitalizing, and 20.5% were transferred to hospitals. An AD for not hospitalizing decreased the likelihood of hospital transfers (p = 0.005). Multilevel logistic regression analysis showed that family involvement was not associated with hospital transfers (odds ratio OR: 1.18; 95% confidence interval CI: 0.77-1.80), while an AD for not hospitalizing was significantly associated with decreased hospital transfers (OR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.28-0.89) among the LTCF residents.
Although ADs are not legally defined in Japan, we found that an AD for not hospitalizing decreased hospital transfers. Given that many older people tend to hesitate to express their wishes in clinical decision-making situations in Japan, regular discussions are necessary to help them express their care preferences while also documenting the discussions to ensure the residents receive high-quality care.
We analyzed antibody response patterns according to the level of disease severity in patients with novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) in Japan. We analyzed 611 serum specimens from 231 ...patients with COVID‐19 (mild, 170; severe, 31; critical, 30). Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies against nucleocapsid protein (N) and spike 1 protein (S1) were detected by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays. The peaks of fitting curves for the optical density (OD) values of IgM and IgG antibodies against N appeared simultaneously, while those against S1 were delayed compared with N. The OD values of IgM against N and IgG against both N and S1 were significantly higher in the severe and critical cases than in the mild cases at 11 days after symptom onset. The seroconversion rates of IgG were higher than those of IgM against both N and S1 during the clinical course based on the optimal cut‐off values defined in this study. The seroconversion rates of IgG and IgM against N and S1 were higher in the severe and critical cases than in the mild cases. Our findings show that a stronger antibody response occurred in COVID‐19 patients with greater disease severity and there were low seroconversion rates of antibodies against N and S1 in the mild cases.
Neutrophils stand sentinel over infection and possess diverse antimicrobial weapons, including neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). NETs are composed of web-like extracellular DNA decorated with ...antimicrobial substances and can trap and eliminate invading microorganisms. Although phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) is a potent NET inducer, previous studies have demonstrated that not all neutrophils exhibit NET formation even if stimulated by PMA at high concentrations. This study first showed that some neutrophils stimulated by PMA displayed a swollen nucleus but not NET formation and that hypoxic environments suppressed the NET release. Next, characterization of PMA-stimulated neutrophils with a swollen nucleus was accomplished by differentiating between suicidal-type NETosis and apoptosis. Furthermore, the significance of the phenomenon was examined using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human lung disease tissues with and without pneumonia. As a result, histone H3 citrullination, DNA outflow, propidium iodide labeling, resistance to DNase I, and suspended actin rearrangement were characteristics of PMA-stimulated neutrophils with a swollen nucleus distinct from neutrophils that underwent either suicidal-type NETosis or apoptosis. Neutrophils stimulated by PMA under hypoxic conditions secreted matrix metalloproteinase-9 cytotoxic to human lung-derived fibroblasts. Further, deposition of neutrophil-derived citrullinated histone H3+ chromatin substances in pulmonary lesions was greater in patients with pneumonia than in patients without pneumonia and positively correlated with hypoxia-inducible factor-1α expression. The collective findings suggested that neutrophils activated under hypoxic conditions could be putative modulators of hypoxia-related disease manifestations.
The native habitat, phenology and embryo development of Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schm. distributed in areas surrounding Shimane Peninsula, Japan were investigated in order to facilitate preservation of ...natural habitats and develop herb applications as a local genetic resources of this plant. Several wild populations of G. littoralis were found in the sandy beach areas of Yumigahama (Yonago, Tottori pref.), Iwami-Kaihin Park (Hamada, Shimane pref.) and other beaches. The protection and increase of G. littoralis population has been promoted in the beaches of Yumigahama and Sotozono (Izumo, Shimane pref.). In the wild habitat of this plant, the following phenological events were observed: Foliation from the end of Feb., flower bud emergence from the mid Apr., flowering from early May to mid Aug., fruit development, maturation and abscission at the peduncle from early July, leaf yellowing and abscission from Sep. and dormancy from the beginning of Dec. Embryos in the seeds began to enlarge under cold stratification for fifty days. GA treatment and removal of pericarp also promoted embryo development and germination.
