In this Letter we discuss what happens to hydrogen recombination energy that is released during regular common envelope (CE) events as opposed to self-regulated CE events. We show that the amount of ...recombination energy that can be transferred away by either convection or radiation from the regions where recombination takes place is negligible. Instead, recombination energy is destined to be used either to help CE expansion, as a work term, or to accelerate local fluid elements. The exceptions are donors that initially have very high entropy material, S/(kB NA) > 37 mol g−1. The analysis and conclusions are independent of specific stellar models or evolutionary codes, and rely on fundamental properties of stellar matter such as the equation of state, Saha equation, and opacities, as well as on stellar structure equations and the mixing length theory of convection.
The review covers the research on thermocapillary convection caused by the thermal action of laser radiation in single-layer and bilayer liquid systems of capillary thickness. The advantages of using ...optical radiation are the instantaneous delivery of thermal energy to a place on demand (a bulk phase, interfaces); low radiation power required; concentrating heat flux on a spot of a few micrometers; the production of arbitrary spatial distributions of radiation intensity; and, as a result, corresponding thermal fields at a liquid interface and their fast reconfiguration. Thermocapillary stresses at the liquid interfaces lead to the transfer of the liquid and a change in the shape of the interface, in accordance with the distribution of the light-induced thermal field. Studies concerned with the methods of non-destructive testing of liquid media and solids, which are based on a photothermocapillary signal emitted by a laser-induced concave deformation of a thin layer, are considered. Features of thermocapillary deformation of a liquid–air interface caused by local heating of thin and thick (exceeding the capillary length) layers are demonstrated. A part of the review addresses the results of the study of thermocapillary rupture of films in the heating zone and the application of this effect in semiconductor electronics and high-resolution lithography. The works on the light-induced thermocapillary effect in bilayer (multilayer) liquid systems are analyzed, including early works on image recording liquid layer systems, liquid IR transducers, and nonlinear optical media.
The high-dimensional data created by high-throughput technologies require visualization tools that reveal data structure and patterns in an intuitive form. We present PHATE, a visualization method ...that captures both local and global nonlinear structure using an information-geometric distance between data points. We compare PHATE to other tools on a variety of artificial and biological datasets, and find that it consistently preserves a range of patterns in data, including continual progressions, branches and clusters, better than other tools. We define a manifold preservation metric, which we call denoised embedding manifold preservation (DEMaP), and show that PHATE produces lower-dimensional embeddings that are quantitatively better denoised as compared to existing visualization methods. An analysis of a newly generated single-cell RNA sequencing dataset on human germ-layer differentiation demonstrates how PHATE reveals unique biological insight into the main developmental branches, including identification of three previously undescribed subpopulations. We also show that PHATE is applicable to a wide variety of data types, including mass cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, Hi-C and gut microbiome data.

New trends in economic development and conditions of uncertainty in innovation processes force organizations to look for new approaches to manage innovative projects. Ensuring sustainable and stable development of organizations requires finding sources of competitive advantages, as well as maintaining these advantages over competitors. Strong competitive advantages depend largely on its unique resources, resource solutions, competencies, organizational and production positions, as well as unique management technologies. It is necessary to improve the methods of evaluating innovative projects, since only the implementation of cost-effective innovative projects in the development of new technological developments and innovative products makes possible the transition to sustainable economic growth. Until now, there is no integral unified system for supporting the adoption of coordinated innovative decisions, taking into account the assessment and management of project risks, therefore, there is no mechanism that "standardizes" business processes that guarantees the timely achievement of tactical and strategic goals. Thus, innovation is one of the key factors both for the long-term development of an individual firm and for solving macroeconomic problems. Creation of conditions for Russia most favorable to its entry into the top five world economies is becoming an urgent task of one of the economic components of our country's foreign policy. The relevance of this study is due to the need for a scientifically grounded decision to manage innovative projects, which determined the choice of the topic of this study.
Fibrobacter succinogenes is an important member of the rumen microbial community that converts plant biomass into nutrients usable by its host. This bacterium, which is also one of only two ...cultivated species in its phylum, is an efficient and prolific degrader of cellulose. Specifically, it has a particularly high activity against crystalline cellulose that requires close physical contact with this substrate. However, unlike other known cellulolytic microbes, it does not degrade cellulose using a cellulosome or by producing high extracellular titers of cellulase enzymes. To better understand the biology of F. succinogenes, we sequenced the genome of the type strain S85 to completion. A total of 3,085 open reading frames were predicted from its 3.84 Mbp genome. Analysis of sequences predicted to encode for carbohydrate-degrading enzymes revealed an unusually high number of genes that were classified into 49 different families of glycoside hydrolases, carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs), carbohydrate esterases, and polysaccharide lyases. Of the 31 identified cellulases, none contain CBMs in families 1, 2, and 3, typically associated with crystalline cellulose degradation. Polysaccharide hydrolysis and utilization assays showed that F. succinogenes was able to hydrolyze a number of polysaccharides, but could only utilize the hydrolytic products of cellulose. This suggests that F. succinogenes uses its array of hemicellulose-degrading enzymes to remove hemicelluloses to gain access to cellulose. This is reflected in its genome, as F. succinogenes lacks many of the genes necessary to transport and metabolize the hydrolytic products of non-cellulose polysaccharides. The F. succinogenes genome reveals a bacterium that specializes in cellulose as its sole energy source, and provides insight into a novel strategy for cellulose degradation.
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, but challenges in detecting, isolating, and classifying unknown viruses have prevented exhaustive surveys of the global virome. Here we ...analysed over 5 Tb of metagenomic sequence data from 3,042 geographically diverse samples to assess the global distribution, phylogenetic diversity, and host specificity of viruses. We discovered over 125,000 partial DNA viral genomes, including the largest phage yet identified, and increased the number of known viral genes by 16-fold. Half of the predicted partial viral genomes were clustered into genetically distinct groups, most of which included genes unrelated to those in known viruses. Using CRISPR spacers and transfer RNA matches to link viral groups to microbial host(s), we doubled the number of microbial phyla known to be infected by viruses, and identified viruses that can infect organisms from different phyla. Analysis of viral distribution across diverse ecosystems revealed strong habitat-type specificity for the vast majority of viruses, but also identified some cosmopolitan groups. Our results highlight an extensive global viral diversity and provide detailed insight into viral habitat distribution and host–virus interactions.

The Integrated Microbial Genomes & Microbiomes system (IMG/M: https://img.jgi.doe.gov/m/) contains annotated isolate genome and metagenome datasets sequenced at the DOE’s Joint Genome ...Institute (JGI), submitted by external users, or imported from public sources such as NCBI. IMG v 6.0 includes advanced search functions and a new tool for statistical analysis of mixed sets of genomes and metagenome bins. The new IMG web user interface also has a new Help page with additional documentation and webinar tutorials to help users better understand how to use various IMG functions and tools for their research. New datasets have been processed with the prokaryotic annotation pipeline v.5, which includes extended protein family assignments.
DNA-based testing has been gaining acceptance as a tool for authentication of a wide range of food products; however, its applicability for testing of herbal supplements remains contentious.
We ...utilized Sanger and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) for taxonomic authentication of fifteen herbal supplements representing three different producers from five medicinal plants: Echinacea purpurea, Valeriana officinalis, Ginkgo biloba, Hypericum perforatum and Trigonella foenum-graecum. Experimental design included three modifications of DNA extraction, two lysate dilutions, Internal Amplification Control, and multiple negative controls to exclude background contamination. Ginkgo supplements were also analyzed using HPLC-MS for the presence of active medicinal components.
All supplements yielded DNA from multiple species, rendering Sanger sequencing results for rbcL and ITS2 regions either uninterpretable or non-reproducible between the experimental replicates. Overall, DNA from the manufacturer-listed medicinal plants was successfully detected in seven out of eight dry herb form supplements; however, low or poor DNA recovery due to degradation was observed in most plant extracts (none detected by Sanger; three out of seven-by NGS). NGS also revealed a diverse community of fungi, known to be associated with live plant material and/or the fermentation process used in the production of plant extracts. HPLC-MS testing demonstrated that Ginkgo supplements with degraded DNA contained ten key medicinal components.
Quality control of herbal supplements should utilize a synergetic approach targeting both DNA and bioactive components, especially for standardized extracts with degraded DNA. The NGS workflow developed in this study enables reliable detection of plant and fungal DNA and can be utilized by manufacturers for quality assurance of raw plant materials, contamination control during the production process, and the final product. Interpretation of results should involve an interdisciplinary approach taking into account the processes involved in production of herbal supplements, as well as biocomplexity of plant-plant and plant-fungal biological interactions.
