Using 14M ψ(2S) events accumulated by BESII at the BEPC, a covariant helicity amplitude analysis is performed for ψ(2S)→π+π−J/ψ, J/ψ→μ+μ−. The π+π− mass spectrum, distinctly different from phase ...space, suggests σ production in this process. Two different theoretical schemes are used in the global fit to the data. The results are consistent with the existence of the σ. The σ pole position is determined to be (552−106+ 84)−i(232−72+81) MeV/c2.
Yersinia are causative agents in human diseases ranging from gastrointestinal syndromes to Bubonic Plague. There is increasing risk of misuse of infectious agents, such as Yersinia pestis, as weapons ...of terror as well as instruments of warfare for mass destruction. YopH is an essential virulence factor whose protein-tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) activity is required for Yersinia pathogenicity. Consequently, there is considerable interest in developing potent and selective YopH inhibitors as novel anti-plague agents. We have screened a library of 720 structurally diverse commercially available carboxylic acids and identified 26 YopH inhibitors with IC50 values below 100 μm. The most potent and specific YopH inhibitor is aurintricarboxylic acid (ATA), which exhibits a Ki value of 5 nm for YopH and displays 6–120-fold selectivity in favor of YopH against a panel of mammalian PTPs. To determine whether ATA can block the activity of YopH in a cellular context, we have examined the effect of ATA on T-cell signaling in human Jurkat cells transfected with YopH. We show that YopH severely decreases the T-cell receptor-induced cellular tyrosine phosphorylation, ERK1/2 activity, and interleukin-2 transcriptional activity. We demonstrate that ATA can effectively block the inhibitory activity of YopH and restore normal T-cell function. These results provide a proof-of-concept for the hypothesis that small molecule inhibitors that selectively target YopH may be therapeutically useful. In addition, it is expected that potent and selective YopH inhibitors, such as ATA, should be useful reagents to delineate YopH's cellular targets in plague and other pathogenic conditions caused by Yersinia infection.
Metastatic melanoma is a deadly disease that claims thousands of lives each year despite the introduction of several immunotherapeutic agents into the clinic over the past decade, inspiring the ...development of novel therapeutics and the exploration of combination therapies. Our investigations target melanin pigment with melanin-specific radiolabeled antibodies as a strategy to treat metastatic melanoma. In this study, a theranostic approach was applied by first labeling a chimeric antibody targeting melanin, c8C3, with the SPECT radionuclide
Pb for microSPECT/CT imaging of C57Bl6 mice bearing B16-F10 melanoma tumors. Imaging was followed by radioimmunotherapy (RIT), whereby the c8C3 antibody is radiolabeled with a
Pb/
Bi "in vivo generator", which emits cytotoxic alpha particles. Using microSPECT/CT, we collected sequential images of B16-F10 murine tumors to investigate antibody biodistribution. Treatment with the
Pb/
Bi-labeled c8C3 antibody demonstrated a dose-response in tumor growth rate in the 5-10 µCi dose range when compared to the untreated and radiolabeled control antibody and a significant prolongation in survival. No hematologic or systemic toxicity of the treatment was observed. However, administration of higher doses resulted in a biphasic tumor dose response, with the efficacy of treatment decreasing when the administered doses exceeded 10 µCi. These results underline the need for more pre-clinical investigation of targeting melanin with
Pb-labeled antibodies before the clinical utility of such an approach can be assessed.
A mathematical model has been developed to describe the simultaneous autotrophic and heterotrophic growth in granule-based sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Experimental results of a laboratory-scale ...granule-based SBR are used to calibrate and validate the model. The model is able to simulate the reactor performance and gain insight in autotrophic and heterotrophic growth in the granules. With the established model, the fractions of active biomass (autotrophs and heterotrophs) and inert biomass are predicted to be 55.6% and 44.4% of the total mixed liquid volatile suspended solid, respectively, at a solids retention time (SRT) of 20 days. Biomass content increases with increasing SRT, but active biomass ratio decreases. Autotrophs have no significant effect on the total biomass content, although they play an important role in nitrogen removal. Simulation results also demonstrate the key role of the influent substrate and NH

+-N in governing the composition of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass in a granule-based SBR. The autotrophs are mainly located on the outer layer of granules, whereas the heterotrophs are present in the center of granules, or on the outer layer of granules.
Using 2917 pb(-1) of data accumulated at 3.773 GeV, 44.5 pb(-1) of data accumulated at 3.65 GeV and data accumulated during a psi(3770) line-shape scan with the BESIII detector, the reaction e(+)e(-) ...-> p (p) over bar is studied considering a possible interference between resonant and continuum amplitudes. The cross section of e(+)e(-) -> psi(3770) -> p (p) over bar, sigma(e(+)e(-)-> psi(3770) -> p (p) over bar), is found to have two solutions, determined to be (0.059(-0.020)(+0.070) +/- 0.012) pb with the phase angle phi = (255.8(-26.6)(+39.0) +/- 4.8). (< 0.166 pb at the 90% confidence level), or sigma(e(+)e(-) -> psi(3770) -> p<(p)over bar>) = (2.57(-0.13)(+0.12) +/- 0.12) pb with phi = (266.9(-6.3)(+6.1) +/- 0.9)degrees both of which agree with a destructive interference. Using the obtained cross section of psi(3770) -> p (p) over bar, the cross section of p (p) over bar -> psi(3770), which is useful information for the future PANDA experiment, is estimated to be either (9.8(-3.9)(+11.8)) nb (< 27.5 nb at 90% C.L.) or (425.6(-43.7)(+42.9)) nb. The decay J/ψ→ωpp̄ is studied using a 5.8×10

J/ψ event sample accumulated with the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron–Positron Collider. The decay branching fraction is measured to be ...B(J/ψ→ωpp̄)=(9.8±0.3±1.4)×10

. No significant enhancement near the pp̄ mass threshold is observed, and an upper limit of B(J/ψ→ωX(1860))B(X(1860)→pp̄)<1.5×10

is determined at the 95% confidence level, where X(1860) designates the near-threshold enhancement seen in the pp̄ mass spectrum in J/ψ→γpp̄ decays.
Recent reports have suggested that uterine manipulators can induce lymphovascular space involvement (LVSI) by endometrial cancer in laparoscopic hysterectomy specimens. The prognostic significance of ...this phenomenon known as "vascular pseudo invasion" remains elusive.
The authors conducted a retrospective, single institution study of patients who underwent initial surgery for grade 1 and grade 2 endometrioid endometrial cancers with LVSI. Cases were stratified by surgical approach (laparoscopy vs laparotomy). Clinicopathologic and procedure characteristics as well as outcome data were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Disease-free survival (DFS) was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier product limit method.
A total of 104 cases (20 laparoscopic, 84 laparotomy) were analyzed. Mean age (65 vs 64 years, respectively), stage distribution, mean number of lymph nodes sampled (18 vs 21, respectively) and use of adjuvant therapy was similar for both groups (p > 0.05). Mean body mass index (BMI) was 30 vs 35 kg/m2, respectively (p = 0.002). Mean follow up was 24 months (range 0.1-102). Univariate analysis demonstrated that LVSI in the laparoscopic setting was associated with worse DFS (p = 0.002). After adjusting for grade the risk of recurrence remained higher for laparoscopic cases (HR: 15.7, 95% CI 1.7-140.0, p = 0.014).
Adjusted risk of recurrence associated with LVSI is higher in cases approached laparoscopically arguing against the concept of "vascular pseudo invasion" associated with the use of uterine manipulators and balloons. LVSI should be regarded as a serious risk factor and taken into account for triage to adjuvant therapies, even in laparoscopically treated early-stage endometrial cancer.
Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 5.85 fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.61 to 4.95 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure ...the cross section for the process e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ. A new resonance with a mass of M=4708_{-15}^{+17}±21 MeV/c^{2} and a width of Γ=126_{-23}^{+27}±30 MeV is observed in the energy-dependent line shape of the e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ cross section with a significance over 5σ. The K^{+}J/ψ system is also investigated to search for charged charmoniumlike states, but no significant Z_{cs}^{+} states are observed. Upper limits on the Born cross sections for e^{+}e^{-}→K^{-}Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}/K^{-}Z_{cs}(4000)^{+}+c.c. with Z_{cs}(3985)^{±}/Z_{cs}(4000)^{±}→K^{±}J/ψ are reported at 90% confidence levels. The ratio of branching fractions {B(Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}→K^{+}J/ψ)/BZ_{cs}(3985)^{+}→(Dover ¯^{0}D_{s}^{*+}+Dover ¯^{*0}D_{s}^{+})} is measured to be less than 0.03 at 90% confidence level.
The numbers of ψ(3686) events accumulated by the BESIII detector for the data taken during 2009 and 2012 are determined to be ( 107.0 ± 0.8 ) × 10 6 and ( 341.1 ± 2.1 ) × 10 6 , respectively, by ...counting inclusive hadronic events, where the uncertainties are systematic and the statistical uncertainties are negligible. The number of events for the sample taken in 2009 is consistent with that of the previous measurement. The total number of ψ(3686) events for the two data taking periods is ( 448.1 ± 2.9 ) × 10 6 .
