Despite many efforts to develop hormone therapy and chemotherapy, no effective strategy to suppress prostate cancer metastasis has been established because the metastasis is not well understood. We ...here investigate a role of CBP/p300-interacting transactivator with E/D-rich carboxy-terminal domain-2 (CITED2) in prostate cancer metastasis. CITED2 is highly expressed in metastatic prostate cancer, and its expression is correlated with poor survival. The CITED2 gene is highly activated by ETS-related gene that is overexpressed due to chromosomal translocation. CITED2 acts as a molecular chaperone to guide PRMT5 and p300 to nucleolin, thereby activating nucleolin. Informatics and experimental data suggest that the CITED2-nucleolin axis is involved in prostate cancer metastasis. This axis stimulates cell migration through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and promotes cancer metastasis in a xenograft mouse model. Our results suggest that CITED2 plays a metastasis-promoting role in prostate cancer and thus could be a target for preventing prostate cancer metastasis.
Recent obesity studies have reported that the rising trend in obesity has stabilized or leveled off. Our study aimed to update estimates of the recent prevalence trend in obesity based on the Korean ...National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1998–2014.
A total of 66,663 subjects were included and defined as being either underweight, overweight, or obese, in accordance with a BMI of 18.5 kg/m2 or lower, 23 kg/m2 or higher, and 25 kg/m2 or higher, respectively.
The prevalence of underweight in KNHANES I through VI surveys was 5.4%, 6.1%, 5.8%, 6.5%, 7.6%, and 7.5%, respectively, in men (p for trend = 0.04, β = 0.003) and 4.7%, 3.3%, 3.4%, 3.3%, 2.7%, and 2.6%, respectively, in women (p for trend = 0.03, β = −0.002). Also for KNHANES I through VI, the respective prevalence of overweight/obesity was 50.3%, 57.2%, 62.5%, 62.3%, 61.4%, and 61.3% in men (p for trend<0.01, β = 0.009) and 48.3%, 50.3%, 50.0%, 47.8%, 47.0%, and 45.3% in women (p for trend<0.01, β = −0.01), respectively.
The obesity occurrence in men was trending upward with respect to overweight/obesity and for grade 1 and 2 obesity, but not for abdominal obesity. However, the obesity trends in women were leveling off from overweight/obesity, grade 1 obesity, and abdominal obesity measures. Further studies are required with data on muscle mass and adiposity for effective obesity control policies.

Since mid-December of 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spreading from Wuhan, China. The confirmed COVID-19 patients in South Korea are those who came from or visited China. As ...secondary transmissions have occurred and the speed of transmission is accelerating, there are rising concerns about community infections. The 54-year old male is the third patient diagnosed with COVID-19 in Korea. He is a worker for a clothing business and had mild respiratory symptoms and intermittent fever in the beginning of hospitalization, and pneumonia symptoms on chest computerized tomography scan on day 6 of admission. This patient caused one case of secondary transmission and three cases of tertiary transmission. Hereby, we report the clinical findings of the index patient who was the first to cause tertiary transmission outside China. Interestingly, after lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra, AbbVie) was administered, β-coronavirus viral loads significantly decreased and no or little coronavirus titers were observed.
The prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing proteins (PHD1-3) and the asparaginyl hydroxlyase factor inhibiting HIF (FIH) are oxygen sensors for hypoxia-inducible factor-driven transcription of ...hypoxia-induced genes, but whether these sensors affect oxygen-dependent epigenetic regulation more broadly is not known. Here, we show that FIH exerts an additional role as an oxygen sensor in epigenetic control by the histone lysine methyltransferases G9a and GLP. FIH hydroxylated and inhibited G9a and GLP under normoxia. When the FIH reaction was limited under hypoxia, G9a and GLP were activated and repressed metastasis suppressor genes, thereby triggering cancer cell migration and peritoneal dissemination of ovarian cancer xenografts. In clinical specimens of ovarian cancer, expression of FIH and G9a were reciprocally associated with patient outcomes. We also identified mutations of FIH target motifs in G9a and GLP, which exhibited excessive H3K9 methylation and facilitated cell invasion. This study provides insight into a new function of FIH as an upstream regulator of oxygen-dependent chromatin remodeling. It also implies that the FIH-G9a/GLP pathway could be a potential target for inhibiting hypoxia-induced cancer metastasis.
These findings deepen understanding of oxygen-dependent gene regulation and cancer metastasis in response to hypoxia.

Three-dimensional SiO₂-based inverse opal (SiO₂-IO) nanostructures were prepared for use as biosensors. SiO₂-IO was fabricated by vertical deposition and calcination processes. Antibodies were ...immobilized on the surface of SiO₂-IO using 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS), a succinimidyl-(N-maleimidopropionamido)-tetraethyleneglycol ester (NHS-PEG₄-maleimide) cross-linker, and protein G. The highly accessible surface and porous structure of SiO₂-IO were beneficial for capturing influenza viruses on the antibody-immobilized surfaces. Moreover, as the binding leads to the redshift of the reflectance peak, the influenza virus could be detected by simply monitoring the change in the reflectance spectrum without labeling. SiO₂-IO showed high sensitivity in the range of 10³-10⁵ plaque forming unit (PFU) and high specificity to the influenza A (H1N1) virus. Due to its structural and optical properties, SiO₂-IO is a promising material for the detection of the influenza virus. Our study provides a generalized sensing platform for biohazards as various sensing strategies can be employed through the surface functionalization of three-dimensional nanostructures.
Background and Aims
Although many studies revealed transcriptomic subtypes of HCC, concordance of the subtypes are not fully examined. We aim to examine a consensus of transcriptomic subtypes and ...correlate them with clinical outcomes.
Approach and Results
By integrating 16 previously established genomic signatures for HCC subtypes, we identified five clinically and molecularly distinct consensus subtypes. STM (STeM) is characterized by high stem cell features, vascular invasion, and poor prognosis. CIN (Chromosomal INstability) has moderate stem cell features, but high genomic instability and low immune activity. IMH (IMmune High) is characterized by high immune activity. BCM (Beta‐Catenin with high Male predominance) is characterized by prominent β‐catenin activation, low miRNA expression, hypomethylation, and high sensitivity to sorafenib. DLP (Differentiated and Low Proliferation) is differentiated with high hepatocyte nuclear factor 4A activity. We also developed and validated a robust predictor of consensus subtype with 100 genes and demonstrated that five subtypes were well conserved in patient‐derived xenograft models and cell lines. By analyzing serum proteomic data from the same patients, we further identified potential serum biomarkers that can stratify patients into subtypes.
Conclusions
Five HCC subtypes are correlated with genomic phenotypes and clinical outcomes and highly conserved in preclinical models, providing a framework for selecting the most appropriate models for preclinical studies.

The chapters in this book critically reassess the Korean urban development experience from regional policy to new town development, demonstrating how these policy experiences were deeply rooted in Korea’s socioeconomic environment and discussing what can be learned from them when applying them in other developmental contexts. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers in the field of urban studies and developmental studies in general, and in Korea’s (urban) development experience in particular.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently one of the most common types of chronic liver injury. Elevated serum uric acid is a strong predictor of the development of fatty liver as well ...as metabolic syndrome. Here we demonstrate that uric acid induces triglyceride accumulation by SREBP-1c activation via induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in hepatocytes. Uric acid-induced ER stress resulted in an increase of glucose-regulated protein (GRP78/94), splicing of the X-box-binding protein-1 (XBP-1), the phosphorylation of protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK), and eukaryotic translation initiation factor-2α (eIF-2α) in cultured hepatocytes. Uric acid promoted hepatic lipogenesis through overexpression of the lipogenic enzyme, acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) via activation of SREBP-1c, which was blocked by probenecid, an organic anion transport blocker in HepG2 cells and primary hepatocytes. A blocker of ER stress, tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), and an inhibitor of SREBP-1c, metformin, blocked hepatic fat accumulation, suggesting that uric acid promoted fat synthesis in hepatocytes via ER stress-induced activation of SREBP-1c. Uric acid-induced activation of NADPH oxidase preceded ER stress, which further induced mitochondrial ROS production in hepatocytes. These studies provide new insights into the mechanisms by which uric acid stimulates fat accumulation in the liver.
Although understanding the physiological mechanisms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is important for treating OSA, limited studies have examined OSA patients' sleep architecture at the ...epoch-by-epoch level and analysed the impact of sleep position and stage on OSA pathogenesis. The epoch-labelled polysomnogram was analysed multidimensionally to investigate the effect of sleep position on the sleep architecture and risk factors of apnea in patients with OSA. This retrospective multicentric case-control study reviewed full-night diagnostic polysomnography of 6983 participants. The difference in the proportion of time spent supine during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and REM stages, and the mean duration of respiratory events per body position were evaluated. The frequency of sleep stage transition per body position shift type was computed. Further subgroup analysis was performed based on OSA severity and positional dependency. Supine time in patients with OSA varied across sleep stages, with lower proportions in N3 and REM, and shorter durations with severity. Patients with OSA spent less time in supine positions during N3 and REM, and experienced longer apnea events in both positions compared to the control group. The frequency of all sleep stage transitions increased with OSA severity and was higher among non-positional OSA than positional OSA and the control group, regardless of body position shift type. The sleep stage transition from N3 and REM to wakefulness was notably heightened during position shift. Understanding the sleep architecture of patients with OSA requires analysing various sleep characteristics including sleep position simultaneously, with future studies focusing on position detection to predict sleep stages and respiratory events.
As an effective platform to exploit triplet–triplet-annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC), microcapsules composed of a fluidic UC core and photonic shell are microfluidically prepared using ...a triple emulsion as the template. The photonic shell consists of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with a periodic helical structure, exhibiting a photonic band gap. Combined with planar anchoring at the boundaries, the shell serves as a resonance cavity for TTA-UC emission and enables spectral tuning of the UC under low-power-density excitation. The CLC shell can be stabilized by introducing a polymerizable mesogen in the LC host. Because of the microcapsule spherical symmetry, spontaneous emission of the delayed fluorescence is omnidirectionally amplified at the edge of the stop band. These results demonstrate the range of opportunities provided by TTA-UC systems for the future design of low-threshold photonic devices.
