To establish safety guidelines for lactic acid bacteria, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)/World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that lactic acid bacteria be characterized and proven safe for consumers' health via multiple experiments (e.g., antibiotic resistance, metabolic activity, toxin production, hemolytic activity, infectivity in immune-compromised animal species, human side effects, and adverse-outcome analyses). Among the lactic acid bacteria,
and
species are probiotic strains that are most commonly commercially produced and actively studied.
BGN4 and
BORI have been used in global functional food markets (e.g., China, Germany, Jordan, Korea, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam) as nutraceutical ingredients for decades, without any adverse events. However, given that the safety of some newly screened probiotic species has recently been debated, it is crucial that the consumer safety of each commercially utilized strain be confirmed. Accordingly, this paper details a safety assessment of
BGN4 and
BORI via the assessment of ammonia production, hemolysis of blood cells, biogenic amine production, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, antibiotic resistance gene transferability, PCR data on antibiotic resistance genes, mucin degradation, genome stability, and possession of virulence factors. These probiotic strains showed neither hemolytic activity nor mucin degradation activity, and they did not produce ammonia or biogenic amines (i.e., cadaverine, histamine or tyramine).
BGN4 and
BORI produced a small amount of putrescine, commonly found in living cells, at levels similar to or lower than that found in other foods (e.g., spinach, ketchup, green pea, sauerkraut, and sausage).
BGN4 showed higher resistance to gentamicin than the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) cut-off. However, this paper shows the gentamicin resistance of
BGN4 was not transferred via conjugation with
ATCC 4356, the latter of which is highly susceptible to gentamicin. The entire genomic sequence of
BGN4 has been published in GenBank (accession no.: CP001361.1), documenting the lack of retention of plasmids capable of transferring an antibiotic-resistant gene. Moreover, there was little genetic mutation between the first and 25th generations of
BGN4. Tetracycline-resistant genes are prevalent among
strains;
BORI has a
(W) gene on its chromosome DNA and has also shown resistance to tetracycline. However, this research shows that its tetracycline resistance was not transferred via conjugation with
AGBG1, the latter of which is highly sensitive to tetracycline. These findings support the continuous use of
BGN4 and
BORI as probiotics, both of which have been reported as safe by several clinical studies, and have been used in food supplements for many years.

A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted from September 16 to October 15, 2020, involving 16 healthcare facilities (4 public medical centers, 12 tertiary-care hospitals) that provide treatment for COVID-19 patients.
Public medical centers provided the majority (69.4%) of total hospital beds for COVID-19 patients (n = 611), on the other hand, tertiary care hospitals provided the majority (78.9%) of critical care beds (n = 57). The number of beds per doctor (median IQR) in public medical centers was higher than in tertiary care hospitals (20.2 13.0, 29.4 versus 3.0 1.3, 6.6,
= 0.006). Infectious Diseases physicians are mostly (80%) involved among attending physicians. The number of nurses per patient (median interquartile range, IQR) in tertiary-care hospitals was higher than in public medical centers (4.6 3.4-5 vs. 1.1 0.8-2.1,
= 0.089). The median number of nurses per patient for COVID-19 patients was higher than the highest national standard in South Korea (3.8 vs. 2 for critical care). All participating healthcare facilities were also operating screening centers, for which a median of 2 doctors, 5 nurses, and 2 administrating staff were necessary.
As the severity of COVID-19 patients increases, the number of HCWs required increases. Because the workload of HCWs responding to the COVID-19 outbreak is much greater than other situations, a workforce management plan regarding this perspective is required to prevent burnout of HCWs.

= 74). As a result, the experiments were divided into three groups (21D-1, 21D-2, and 21D-3) in the 21-dpv model and two groups (28D-1 and 28D-2) in the 28-dpv model. Each response curve of groups 21D-1 and 21D-2 in the 21-dpv model was very similar to each curve of groups 28D-1 and 28D-2 in the 28-dpv model, respectively, even though there was an exceptional extra group (21D-3) in the 21-dpv model. The average titers estimating 0.75 probability of protection ranged from 1.06 to 1.62 log
in the 21-dpv model and from 1.26 to 1.64 log
in the 28-dpv model. In summary, we demonstrated that the serological method is useful for predicting the homologous and heterologous protection statuses of vaccinated pigs.
Using panel data from 21 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries collected between 2000 and 2016, this study analyzes the effect of age structure on greenhouse gas ...(GHG) emissions from road transportation. Previous studies have failed to reflect the driver's behavior patterns, especially by age group. We apply the Fully-Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method, including the age structure effect by reorganizing 17 age groups into a polynomial structure. The age structure exhibits an asymmetric inverted U-shaped effect on GHG emissions. Initially, people emit more GHGs as they age, and reach peak emissions in their late 20s, after which emissions fall until around the age of 70, when GHG emissions remain constant because of minimum mobility demand. Factors, such as higher income, increased vehicle ownership, and raised transport volumes increase emission rates. On the other hand, fuel transition and increased fuel price, population density, urbanization rate, and fuel economy reduce GHG emissions. Furthermore, we perform a projection of GHG emissions until 2050, and conclude that the effect of age structure is limited because of the minimum mobility demand of the elderly. We conclude that various policy measures, such as increased fuel economy and urbanization, must be considered in order to achieve sustainable transport.
To prospectively compare the accuracy of computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) enterography and small-bowel follow-through (SBFT) examination for detection of active small-bowel ...inflammation and extraenteric complications in patients with Crohn disease (CD).
The institutional review board approved the study protocol; informed consent was obtained from all participants. Thirty-one consecutive patients who had CD or who were suspected of having CD underwent CT and MR enterography, SBFT, and ileocolonoscopy. Two independent readers reviewed CT and MR enterographic and SBFT images for presence of active terminal ileitis and extraenteric complications. Accuracy values of CT and MR enterography and SBFT for identification of active terminal ileitis were evaluated with the receiver operating characteristic method, with ileocolonoscopic findings as the reference standard. Sensitivity values of CT and MR enterography and SBFT for detection of extraenteric complications were compared by using the McNemar test, with results of imaging studies, surgery, and physical examination as reference standards.
The study population included 30 patients (17 men, 13 women; mean age, 29.0 years) with CD. Differences in areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for CT enterography (0.900 and 0.894), MR enterography (0.933 and 0.950), and SBFT (0.883 and 0.928) for readers 1 and 2, respectively, in the detection of active terminal ileitis were not significant (P > .017). Sensitivity values for detection of extraenteric complications were significantly higher for CT and MR enterography (100% for both) than they were for SBFT (32% for reader 1 and 37% for reader 2) (P < .001).
Because MR enterography has a diagnostic effectiveness comparable to that of CT enterography, this technique has potential to be used as a radiation-free alternative for evaluation of patients with CD.
In the use of the medical devices, it is essential to prevent the attachment of bacteria to the device surface or to kill the attached bacteria. To kill bacteria, many researchers have used ...antibiotics or studied nanostructure-based antibacterial surfaces, which rely on mechanical antibacterial methods. Several polymers are widely used for device fabrication, one of which is polycaprolactone (PCL). PCL is biocompatible, biodegradable, easy to fabricate using 3D printing, relatively inexpensive and its quality is easily controlled; therefore, there are various approaches to its use in bio-applications. In addition, it is an FDA-approved material, so it is often used as an implantable material in the human body. However, PCL has no inherent antibacterial function, so it is necessary to develop antibacterial functions in scaffold or film-based PCL medical devices. In this study, process parameters for nanopillar fabrication were established through a simple thermal imprinting method with PCL. Finally, a PCL film with a flexible and transparent nanopillar structure was produced, and the mechano-bactericidal potential was demonstrated using only one PCL material. ) bacteria cultured on its surface that resulted in membrane damage and death due to contact with nanopillars. Additionally, bacteriostatic results were shown to inhibit bacterial growth and activity of

) on PCL nanostructured columns. The fabricated nanopillar structure has confirmed that mechanically induced antibacterial function and can be applied to implantable medical devices.

Urea-based selective-catalytic-reduction (SCR) system is one of the techniques applied to reduce NOx emission in diesel engines. Due to the application of low injection pressure to prevent the wall-wetting of the urea-water solution to the exhaust pipe, the spray atomization, which is important to increase the NOx conversion efficiency, is still unsatisfactory. In this study, we pay attention to the electrostatic force as a source to improve the spray atomization of the urea-water solution. An electric voltage up to 7 kV was charged to a single-hole nozzle injector and various injection pressures up to 7 MPa were applied to investigate how the effect of electric charge on spray atomization appears differently in different flow regimes. High-speed visualization was conducted to observe the macroscopic spray structure. The microscopic spray characteristics were analyzed by a laser diffraction technique. The results showed that the electrostatic force effect, which results in finer droplet size and wider spray coverage area, is obtained especially at higher applied voltage in two different manners depending on the injection pressure, i.e. electrostatic induced jet breakup as a dominant effect at low injection pressures and electrostatic repulsion force-induced spray expansion as a dominant effect at high injection pressures.

Knowledge of the factors affecting the difference in kinetics and longevity of the neutralizing antibody (nAb) response to SARS-CoV-2 is necessary to properly prioritize vaccination. In the ...present study, from March to December 2020, of the 143 patients who recovered from COVID-19, 87 underwent study visits scheduled every 3 months. Patient demographics and blood samples were collected followed by a plaque reduction neutralization test to analyze nAb titers. A linear mixed model was used to compare the effects of sex, age, and disease severity over time. Results demonstrated a gradual reduction in nAb titers over time with a significant decrease from 6 to 9 months post-COVID-19 infection (
p
< 0.001). In time-to-sex, age, and disease severity comparisons, reduction in nAb titers over time was unaffected by sex (
p
= 0.167), age (
p
= 0.188), or disease severity (
p
= 0.081). Additionally, the nAb titer was 1.46 times significantly higher in those aged ≥ 50 years than in those aged < 50 years (

= 0.036) irrespective of time Moreover, the nAb titer was 2.41 times higher in the moderate or above than that in the below moderate disease severity group (

Tetanus is a rare, vaccine-preventable but extremely serious disease. We investigated the recent trend of the clinical outcomes and medical costs for inpatients with tetanus in South Korea over 10 ...years.
We conducted a retrospective review to determine the clinical factors and medical costs associated with tetanus at two national university hospitals in South Korea between January 2011 and October 2019.
Forty-nine patients were admitted for tetanus (mean age, 67.0 years range, 53.0-80.0 years; 32 women 57.1%). All the patients had generalized tetanus, and 5 (10.2%) died during hospitalization. The median duration from symptom onset to hospital admission was 4 days. Trismus (85.7%) was the most common symptom, and the median hospital stay was 39 days. Thirty-two patients (65.3%) required mechanical ventilation, and 20 (40.8%) developed aspiration pneumonia. The median total healthcare cost per patient was US $18,011. After discharge, 35 patients (71.4%) recovered sufficiently to walk without disability.
Tetanus requires long hospital stays and high medical expenditures in South Korea; however, the vaccination completion rate is low. Medical staff should therefore promote medical advice and policies on the management of tetanus to the general South Korean population.
